I’ve not had it yet, not for a few weeks :)

sounds like you need to sell it @dudsville , in what way didn’t you choose it?

@OftenOrange love your coat I think you should get it!

I got my slate cotton linen pinafore and the lightweight denim dress taken up 4 inches last week and I’m most pleased! They are much more wearable for me now

SmartHamster · 12/09/2023 08:30

Thanks @dudsville and @Countmeout - alone with boots is perfect but I struggle a bit with jumpers over dresses - the whole thing endy up feeling bulky. I'll need a try-on session when the weather cools a little.

@Snowyowl78 do you mind me asking how tall you are? Getting them shortened sounds like a great idea.

Is anyone else here 5'2" or thereabouts?

I like a lot of Toast things on me despite my height but I'm sometimes aware that they're probably meant for someone a bit longer!

Snowyowl78 · 12/09/2023 08:38

@SmartHamster i am just a tiny bit under 5’3. I basically get every single dress taken up by 3-5 inches every time! Makes everything rather expensive but means I’ll actually wear it. I can’t do it myself so I have to pay a tailor c. £12. It’s a lot but those two I got this week are so much more wearable now, they swamped me before!

Snowyowl78 · 12/09/2023 08:40

@SmartHamster i find nothing else is affected as the trousers are often cropped and therefore a perfect length on me! Oh also jumpsuits I’ve had taken up.

SmartHamster · 12/09/2023 09:09

That's interesting, thanks! Yes, trousers are perfect on me too - dresses vary.

Saurus72 · 12/09/2023 10:07

interesting about getting things altered, I’ve never really done this before but have been inspired by @ilovecherries talrs from the tailor 😊. The Selma dress was just too ‘bustle’ around the bum and I thought I would sell it on after only a couple of wears. I decided to try and make it work so I took it to a tailor who tapered the sides and put darts in the back. So much more wearable now except tragically it meant I lost the pockets in the tapering. Also cost £40, making a relatively inexpensive dress near £200 😬

ilovecherries · 12/09/2023 10:48

I pay to have the pockets out back in, I just don’t feel right without them, I’m always looking for them. I have (blush) The Spotty Zara dress from - I dunno - 2018? Maybe 2019. Anyway I do need to point out I was a leader with that one. I bought it when it first appeared at Easter before it became ubiquitous. I had bust darts and pockets put in it for £20, probably what I paid for the dress if I’m honest. But it transformed it from a piece of fast fashion into something I’ve worn every summer since I got it.

I’m also 5’2” @SmartHamster. I have never had any of my Toast dresses taken up. I think I have got used to them being quite long, and anything shorter now feels like I am showing too much leg 😂
My legs are short, so I have to turn trousers up, but I don’t mind a wee roll st the bottom. Wide-legged trousers are tricky and would need altering so I avoid as I cannot be bothered.

ScottishMouse · 12/09/2023 10:58

I just popped into Cos and tried on some of those merino layering tops folk were chatting about previously. They are very thin, which I don’t mind, but completely see-through.
I also hate trying on fitted tops. I have put on a lot of weight in the last couple of years, all on my boobs and belly and I find trying on anything in very bright fitting rooms not good for my self-esteem. But tight see-through tops have got to be the worst.
Needless to say, I didn’t buy any. Going to drown my sorrows with some coffee and cake with a pal (this may be part of the issue obvs!).

Dee1224 · 12/09/2023 14:23

Just a quick one: Is the sweater stone worth buying?

FufferPish · 12/09/2023 14:45

I gave up on waiting for the mythical sale and ordered:

  • the Indigo Cotton Twill Wide Leg Trousers (in S and M, as the reviews state that the waistband is tight, and I have no waist!). The shop assistant said that the legs are very wide and the material is heavy. They did not have it in the (Notting Hill) shop though so I could not try the size.
  • The Half Placket Stripe Linen Shirt in S. I tried it in the shop and it is LOVELY and really suits me, but for some reason I did not buy it.
  • Just got the dispatch email and a kindred gift is included. Exciting!

(Now that I have spent so much money on full-price items, the sale is probably due today ;-) )

Dee1224 · 12/09/2023 14:58

Just spent 90 minutes on Toast chat attempting to get to the bottom of why Toast never receive my emails. I rang to discuss my faulty item and to ask if I could have a replacement or another discount code. Tried to email them as requested and a whole can of worms was opened.

It’s happened to me several times before - I email, they don’t get the message. I only got through in the end as the person on Chat messaged me and my response went through. She was very helpful: Code reinstated and item reordered.

In the meantime, no one knows where all my emails have gone- they show as sent my end. I suspect Toast have a very full junk mail folder 🤣

Has this happened to anyone else?

Dropchain · 12/09/2023 14:58

@Dee1224 re sweater stone. I was excited to get this as am constantly battling the bobbles. I have given up with it. It does kind of work but it creates a bit of a mess. And be very careful with delicate knitwear - I went at it a bit too vigorously with my truffle cashmere/wool sweater from last year & now have a hole in it. And I don't like the smell. So not a glowing recommendation from me!

Dee1224 · 12/09/2023 15:01

That’s very helpful @Dropchain - I will give it a miss. Thanks!

I tried them too, and even after sizing up I just couldn’t risk that I’d ever been in a position of having to take a jumper off and have one underneath. The toast ones are much kinder. While I wouldn’t deliberately wear one on show I also wouldn’t have a nervous breakdown if I ever had to show them off. Even my arms looked vast in the cos ones, and my arms are actually quite thin atm. Wrinkly, but thin.

That coat is still on my mind but I realise I’m now very lazy about looking at other makes than Toast; I’ve been down this road before with American Vintage when it did only sludgy colours and then Humanoid ( Dutch company now not stocked here and they’ve gone totally cupro , viscose so thumbs down)
I bought some boots from Studio Nicholson and although I love the aesthetic the shapes seem very exaggerated, anyone else a fan?

@Clowniform You’re right about the huge pockets on the coat , I’m going to have to train myself from sticking hands in otherwise saggy pocket syndrome will set in and cause premature ageing!
You asked about my Season for colours: I don’t really know but having a sallow complexion with no pink I know that orange, bright green and mustard give me a boost whereas cool blues aren’t great.

OftenOrange · 12/09/2023 16:50

@Dropchain @Dee1224 The sweater stone sounds really forensic , have you tried the cashmere comb sold by Brora ? I find it fantastic, Toast cashmere mix cardigan is a b for bobbling so I use it a lot.
I love Toast colours so will buy again but the quality if meh IMO

OftenOrange · 12/09/2023 16:53

Re alterations , I think @ilovecherries has struck gold with the seamstress . Great prices and an obvious flair for knowing how to reshape , love to find similar .

Stoic123 · 12/09/2023 17:25

@Dee1224 - I have the sweater stone. It's useful for a quick touch up but my electric 'shaver' is more effective overall.

Countmeout · 12/09/2023 18:22

I’ll put something together when I get the sweater out of the freezer@dudsville . When I got it I was mindful of all the chat about moths and decided not to risk it. I have a navy sweater but I think it’s very dark with the bud dress.

I have the sweater comb Toast used to do . I prefer it to the battery defuzzer , much more accurate.

No1Mousie · 12/09/2023 19:07

@SmartHamster I'm 5'3", so length on some of the toast dresses can be a bit tricky, but my legs are quite long and that helps. What doesn't help is the fact that I have broad square shoulders even tho' I secretly yearn for sloping feminine dainty shoulders- so I do need some sort of waist shaping/detailing to stop me looking the same width all the way down. I will take hems up if I need to get the proportions right on my frame.

Dee1224 · 12/09/2023 23:57

Thanks for all the debobble advice! Glad I didn’t order the sweater stone when I was re-ordering my slightly reduced and totally unnecessary towel today!

ScottishMouse · 13/09/2023 05:51

Has anyone got (or seen in real life) the Kate Sheridan scout bag? I love the look of it, but wonder how useful it would be - how much can it realistically fit?

dudsville · 13/09/2023 10:16

I don't search out brands so I don't really know about stuff until they're mentioned here, but I just searched the brands you mentioned @OftenOrange as I tend to like your choices and I do like them, but my goodess the prices! Which shoes did you get?

I'm in the space check tiered dress today and washing the fir check to prep it to go to the back of the wardrobe until cooler weather. @Snowyowl78 , it's only because of the fabric, I love the print, colours and the shape very much but the fabric is so off putting. But I'd also hate to part with it as i have a lot of shirt dresses so it's nice to have this to add variation. I just really wish it had been made in 100% cotton and it was a mistake to assume this and stick it straight n the wash. But all is not lost, I've taked myself into thinking this can be a winter dress worn over cotton things.

Those of you who get things shortened, do you keep the left over material? I'm just thinking that a fabulous quilt could be made of toast dress scraps!
