Gold hoop earrings - tacky or classy

I've got about £100 to spend and was thinking about gold hoop earrings because I thought that they are timeless but at the same time I think they could be tacky! Anyone got any nice ones?

@Wakintoblueskies I do not see how decent gold hoops are cheap looking? Who says so? Are you thinking of old fashioned creole earrings?

Some big names in jewellery make beautiful hoops and some are very pretty and everyday useful. Definitely casual. I am not a fan of giant hoops. I don’t like feathers hanging off them Boho style but there are very classy hoops and plenty of great designs. We won’t all agree on design but hoops are every day earrings.

I actually think tiny Diamond studs look like you cannot afford better. So what’s worse? Hoops or a speck of a Diamond? Plus you cannot compare the price of decent Diamond studs with gold hoops so women opt for hoops.

Well of course I don’t have to follow. That is what my personal taste is.

I think hoops can look cheap. I don’t care how much they cost. If the wearer isn’t very groomed or bohemian looking (deliberate with effort not ‘anything goes’ type bohemian) - they look cheap imo - which is what this forum is all about - opinions.

I like small, chunky huggies too, but if you fancy something a bit different have a look at Atrio on Etsy. You can some beautiful bigger but still classy hoops there.

I love large hoop earrings and couldn’t give a hoot what people think about me.
I don’t wear them to work/ business meetings but any other time you will be see me wearing large hoops channeling my inner Sade.

There's something very unpleasant about the tone of some of the posters on this thread. It's great to give opinions, we all have them, but no one likes a superior sounding twat.

I’m still bemused as to why expensive hoop earrings look cheap. I want to see an example of this. Expensive earrings but cheap looking.

Just seen the LV advert with their new “hoops”. Maybe they are cheap looking on the wrong person too?

On the back of this thread, I went into Other Stories today to look at hoops. For anyone interested, they have them in every size from small chunky ones to large ones that are not circular. Both gold and silver plated.

I was wearing a denim shirt and navy linen trousers. My hair was in a hurried ponytail. They looked awful when I held them next to my ear. With my colouring I looked like I could be an extra on EasyEnders - working in the market! But some of them looked lovely - definitely not for me though.

And everyone is allowed to dislike gold hoops aesthetically and choose whether to wear them or not. If you don't like them, it's cool. You're entitled to have those preferences, which in themselves don't hurt anyone.

I just don't like the unquestioned 'trashy' label, which has its roots in looking down upon lower class people- 'chavs', which seems like a mean label- and the Black and Latina communities who are associated with big gold hoops. It seems like punching down.

They don't. People who don't like are just saying they are. They can look really lovely.

I dislike them, but would never ever look down on anybody. It's just a preference like you may not like a style of outfit, etc

Why do haters of the earrings think of oversized ones? They come is all sizes. Some very discrete. It’s utterly bizarre how outdated views are.

Or a young Linda Ronstadt - they don't come much more "classy" than her. If by "classy" you mean talented, generous, supportive of friends and other musicians and exceptionally brave and graceful in the face of Parkinson's Disease.
