Gold hoop earrings - tacky or classy

I've got about £100 to spend and was thinking about gold hoop earrings because I thought that they are timeless but at the same time I think they could be tacky! Anyone got any nice ones?

I think large hoops, not too thick, elongate and show off the neck. Limited other jewellery though, the idea is to look uncluttered.

Gold or silver depends which suits your skin tone. I have yellow undertones so it's gold all the way.

SquashPenguin · 15/08/2023 13:17

Always tacky.

Barold · 15/08/2023 13:18

Classy. They frame the face.

Kowaii · 15/08/2023 13:19

Love my hoops. Bigger the better. The little huggie ones look like something a nan would wear.

SirenSays · 15/08/2023 13:19

Classy unless pizza sized

Judystilldreamsofhorses · 15/08/2023 13:20

I’m 100% in my gold hoop era but agree with pp that I wouldn’t spend ££ on them. Mine are all from Oliver Bonas, Arket and &OtherStories.

babbscrabbs · 15/08/2023 13:20

I think they can look great and people who think they're tacky are fuddy duddies. My SIL who is effortlessly chic and gorgeous (and posh) wears gold hoops and looks amazing.

gogomoto · 15/08/2023 13:21

Small ones are fine, mine hang just 5mm or so from my ears. I can't wear studs so always wear hoops day to day. Have silver in currently

Cantonet · 15/08/2023 13:29

I've been wearing large gold hoops for years & they're in no way tacky. I agree that they're classics, especially in real gold. It's actually pretty difficult to find large gold hoops these days. They're all Vermeil or gold plated.

ladygindiva · 15/08/2023 13:32

I love hoop earrings. I wear them with leggings and trainers. Whatever. If I like something I don't tend to worry about what other people think. Go for it.

TheWayoftheLeaf · 15/08/2023 13:42

I'd say it depends on how thin and how big.

Small is nice thin or thick.

Medium is nice thick.

Large is not nice either way.

This is just my opinion. I am not in charge of class or tack 😂

GreekGod · 15/08/2023 13:42

I love them - suntanned with hair pulled back, very J Lo

headcheffer · 15/08/2023 14:00

They used to be seen as very chavvy but they're very fashionable again right now. Ditto pearls - I have my grandmothers pearls and I wear them with one longer and one shorter gold necklace and they look very on trend.

Spirallingdownwards · 15/08/2023 14:00

I assume quite a few people one here haven't heard the saying " the bigger the hoop, the bigger the ho".

We always give ho ratings to the soap opera characters based on their hoops!

Davestwattymissus · 15/08/2023 14:05

@Spirallingdownwards I prefer 'put your hoops in and remember who you are'!

🤣 I will listen out for that one

lemonsaretheonlyfruit · 15/08/2023 14:11

I love my gold hoops. Thin and medium sized. I would say they are a timeless classic. Work with the right clothes they absolutely look fashionable and classy. I buy most of my clothes in 'and other stories' , Hush, Cos etc and pretty much always wear my gold hoops with them. As others have said - not the big ones!

Also as others have said, I would probably not spend that money on hoops. I'd go for something a bit different as you can get gold hoops anywhere.

BananaStraw · 15/08/2023 14:14

So what earring arrangements are classy? It seems like a minefield!

rockpoolingtogether · 15/08/2023 14:15

I am a classic dresser- eg navy or black merino/cashmere with cigarette pants and loafers. I'm mid 30s, dark brown hair so hoping for classy rather than tacky but hard to get right!

I think fine with leggings and trainers as mentioned above.

Don't really think they look "classy" though in general. A friend with big wavy hair and she wears them in amongst her waves and looks fab!

Goldbar31 · 15/08/2023 14:34

👎👎👎

BeansOnToast32 · 15/08/2023 15:10

I've just had some new earrings delivered today.

I have 3 lobe piercings on each side and wear gold Huggies 24/7, I prefer them because I'm too lazy to put earrings in everyday when I only really leave the house to walk the dog. I can look half put together without much effort.

I also have my daith pierced with the gold BVLA Amity ring which again stays in 24/7.

If I'm going out for a meal or something then I might swap the very bottom lobes for slightly bigger hoops or something dangly.

I thing hoops only look tacky if they are those massive ones from the 90s that are that big they almost touch the shoulders. 😂

I think this thread proves that mumsnet is no longer the place to come for fashion advice.

Jojoanna · 15/08/2023 15:17
