Gold hoop earrings - tacky or classy

I've got about £100 to spend and was thinking about gold hoop earrings because I thought that they are timeless but at the same time I think they could be tacky! Anyone got any nice ones?

Did you want to add to the racism by saying 'and black women' too? Or just stick with the standard level?

MoonsHaunted · 15/08/2023 15:20

wear what YOU think looks nice/cool/classy/stylish. As you can see from this thread there is no point in dressing or accessorising for others as we all have different taste.

Personally I love tacky stuff anyway. As I know I’m not tacky so I pull it off 😅

I was once walking off a plane at the end of a journey. I spied some large gold hoop earrings on the floor. They were expensive. I could feel the weight of them in my hand. I handed them to the flight attendant on the way off the plane. She raised her eyebrows and thanked me and pocketed them. I wish I’d kept them.

I prefer chunky small Huggies ones personally, like these.

I've got a pair very like this and it never entered my head that they might be considered tacky. In fact I will fight anyone who says they are.

With a fake juicy couture tracksuit - tacky
Generally smart and in decent quality clothes - fine

Pretty much this. Assuming they aren't so big they touch your shoulders, then it's all about the context.

OnionBhajis · 15/08/2023 16:00

Chocolate - it depends on colouring too doesn't it. Those Huggies would look naff on me but silver suits my colouring better anyway. Dark hair like the model they look great.

TheGoodBanana · 15/08/2023 16:03

We had a saying when we were teenagers, The Bigger The Hoop, The Bigger The Hoe.

For some reason it's always stayed with me and it's just a silly thing. I would go for a discreet diamond stud but if you really really want a hoop stick with smaller ones.

Let's be honest, it never was - or style advice for that matter either.

TheSkull · 15/08/2023 16:08

Huggies are lovely. Look at Monica Vinader

peachgreen · 15/08/2023 16:09

I love them, they work with my hair (dark and curly). But Christ, don’t spend £100 on them.

Spirallingdownwards · 15/08/2023 14:00

I assume quite a few people one here haven't heard the saying " the bigger the hoop, the bigger the ho".

We always give ho ratings to the soap opera characters based on their hoops!

The nights must fly by

Very surprised at all the gold hatred! I'm pretty sure the world has moved on since the days of Argos gold-plated clown pendants and massive hoops.

I don't wear silver at all (although I did when I was younger). Gold suits my skin tone far better. I like Monica Vinader and Astrid & Miyu, and only wear very small hoops/huggies (I have multiple piercings, all with very delicate studs or small hoops). Also wear gold necklaces, again very delicate and sometimes layered (lots of that style on Monica Vinader website too).

sarrat · 15/08/2023 16:17

I think the small ones are actually really classy and timeless, if real gold. Like these ones

I have thesenones and think they are gorgeous.

Is this monica vinader? Looove these

HundredMilesAnHour · 15/08/2023 16:24

I think it very much depends on your personal style (or lack of!) and your hairstyle - hoops with a 'Croydon facelift' are a huge no-no unless you're aiming to look chavtastic.

I wear these hoops from Shaun Leane that have a bit of an 'edge' to them:

Having lived in Italy for a bit, I associate gold hoops with stylish Italian women, not with being chavvy. The further south you go in Italy, the bigger the hoop!

Runnerinthenight · 15/08/2023 16:32

Tacky no matter how you wear them!

LunchBoxPolice · 15/08/2023 16:36

I have lots of gold hoops and love them. Especially like wearing them if my hair is up, without them I feel like I look a bit “naked”. I have some nice small huggie style ones that I bought on Etsy.
It never occurred to me to wonder if they look tacky, I wear what I like and it seems lots of other posters like them too 😊

WibblyWobblyTimeyWimeyStuff · 15/08/2023 16:38

What IS 'chavvy' and unclassy is saying only travellers and chavs wear them Wink

Nothing wrong with them @rockpoolingtogether

I think this thread proves that mumsnet is no longer the place to come for fashion advice.

Some style opinions on this board do seem quaintly old fashioned. Formed in 1998 and nothing will change them. Gold doesn't suit my colouring but I see plenty of fashionable types on TikTok wearing gold hoops as part of that currently popular 'clean girl' or 'rich girl' aesthetic. And as a pp mentioned lots of chic Italians favour gold hoops.
