I am loving vinted

Hey everyone,

What's everyone's thoughts on vinted? I am absolutely loving it so far.

The clothes I've ordered are practically brand new, amazing condition and a fraction of the price.

It seems especially good for women's and children's clothes and honestly I'm a bit obsessed and need to stop buying really but I'm nearly finished for our holiday and it's mostly been from vinted!

I also feel like I'm saving the earth GrinGrin I know I'm not really but I'm really surprised about how good it is!

My lovely M&S velvet blazer arrived today - brand new with the label still on and cost around £20. It's true what @Motorina says about how messed up women's clothes sizes are - I've bought blazers from phase eight, M&S and warehouse in the same size and they are all completely different.

Also received my first buy today.

Really happy with it. A top for £17 that new would have been £70. Perfect condition.

I think I'm getting the hang of it and starting to understand what to avoid as a buyer and how to sell effectively.

In terms of the latter I think the brand is a big factor but also being realistic about the price and I'm going to have to think about re-pricing some of my items. Others less so if frankly I'm less fussed about a sale.

Even if something is NWT half price doesn't cut it.

I think you have to accept, that unlike buying from a shop (even a charity shop) it's a risk buying from Vinted as you are putting a lot of faith in the buyer being honest about the condition.

Even NWT isn't a guarantee (tags being retrofitted etc) and as previously posted, even "new" is not great if it's been stored poorly.

I've seen a lot of items that are hugely overpriced. Just because something cost £300 doesn't mean you can sell it for £250, especially when the buyer is paying for postage.

Motorina · 26/08/2023 22:41

@BreadInCaptivity I think the pricing point is a key one. There's just soooo much stuff on there that I always filter by price simply to cut down the volume I'm looking at. It doesn't matter how nice the thing you're selling is - if it's over that price band I'm not even going to see it.

Plus there are effectively no guarantees and you're trusting the honesty of the person posting it. I'm not going to spend more than I can afford to lose, and I'm certainly not going to pay even close to retail even for BNWT because, were I buying new, I'd have the advantages of free returns and consumer rights. As is, I'm paying for something that might be good, might be a disaster, and which, if it doesn't fit or suit me, I'm stuck with.

The flip side of that is I've had some super bargains. I'm currently ecstatic about a beautiful navy tweed jacket which fits me perfectly, and is so me it could have been made for me. For £20 including postage. But even buying that felt like taking a deep breathe and gambling, because it might have turned out awful.

I love vinted.
the only thing is that you can end up wirh a lot of random stuff rather than a few things you really love?

Saying that I’ve just bought some hobbs jumpers , like new and now have a realky nice collectikn collection, for the price onein the ahops!

LadyBird1973 · 27/08/2023 09:55

I'm only buying brands I know I like and am limiting myself to around £20 per purchase, because there's no right of return or being able to try something on first. I'm viewing it like a giant charity shop.

Agree some of the pricing is crazy - saw a designer bag in there yesterday with an asking price of around £4,000. Who is going to be crazy enough to part with that kind of money for an item they haven't seen and have to wait for the buyer to send through the post?

LadyBird1973 · 27/08/2023 09:57

It is having the very good effect of keeping me out of proper shops though - I find myself not wanting to spend the cost of a new jacket or bag, if I could get the equivalent on Vinted for a fraction of the price!

For comparison purposes and to easily find them later

Also to scratch that online shopping itch without actually buying anything.

Lentilweaver · 29/08/2023 12:50

How do you all find anything? There's so crumpled, unironed tat and I can't tell how it looks without a model.

I am a complete newbie and at the moment I am only buying new tops under £20 in size 10 to 12. Looking for Cos, Mint Velvet, Massimo Dutti, Zara, etc. Still can't find anything I like.

I tend to shop for a very specific thing. Like, "zip front hoody" and then filter for the colour I'm after (I wanted a sky blue one.) I ended hp finding a BNWT Tu hoody that was exactly what I was after.

A lot of it is crumpled and unironed - some sellers put more effort in than others. You just gotta keep searching.

Lentilweaver · 29/08/2023 13:24

I see thanks @AgingDisgracefullyHere Super alarmed that even new stuff with tags may be old stuff with tags reattached.

ferretface · 29/08/2023 15:58

I don't mind the crumpled and unironed as I wash and iron everything I get from vinted anyway and I only buy brands I already know (and sometimes items I already have seen advertised). I bought a horrendously creased dress for a fraction of the price that other sellers of the same item were charging. A wash and a steam and it looked just like them.

Delatron · 29/08/2023 18:17

I made £330 in a couple of days having a bit of a clear out.

Certain brands go very quickly- a Sezane jumper (worn a few times) sold within a few minutes so I was worried I’d put it on too cheaply (£40). Put another on for £45 and that didn’t sell so maybe £40 was about right. Me & Em and Bash also went quickly.

I have a couple of Whistles dresses on for a tenner which aren’t selling and these are my cheapest items. Can’t be arsed with the faff for much less than that though.

Anjo2011 · 29/08/2023 18:34

I’ve started buying in the last month or so mainly for my DD12. Have had some really nice items. I always filter by new with tags/new without tags and check the sellers feedback. I also take into account how long they take to respond to an offer. The one thing that irks me is the new with tags and the description that says worn a couple of time so new condition. No! If it’s been worn it’s not new. But it does seem to be a common theme. Wouldn’t spend a fortune on any one item and fully expect that at some stage I will get something not as described. But so far so good.

Delatron · 29/08/2023 18:43

Just bought a bag. Said it would deduct from my Vinted balance but also wanted me to use Apple Pay/ a card. The transaction went through and my Vinted balance has gone down?

This is the first time I’ve actually bought something. Hoping I haven’t paid twice? It would not let the transaction process without the card yet still took my Vinted balance down? Arggh

RainbowZebraWarrior · 30/08/2023 11:01

I've got my eye on a few cashmere items.

Can someone tell me how you can see the postage costs before buying? (It just says from £2.87)

Maybe I need to download the app. I'm currently just using the website.

LadyBird1973 · 30/08/2023 11:07

@RainbowZebraWarrior when you click buy on the app, there are delivery options at the bottom (on app). You then choose if you want it delivered to a shop or home and tells you the cost.

MightySprout · 30/08/2023 11:10

I love vinted but sometimes the sellers on it are annoying. I've offered £20 for an alice temperley jumper that is listed for £30. Instead of declining the offer the seller has just ignored it. At least decline and then counter offer!

Probably because offering 2/3 of the price is a bit cheeky?
I sell a lot on vinted and often get people offering half the price I have listed it for (example, listed something for £50 and they put in a offer of £25), I ignore some of these because I’m not going to consider selling something for half what it’s worth. I wish the offer thing was optional like eBay as I list for the price I want to sell.

Delatron · 30/08/2023 15:29

I do decline offers and say why or counter offer if I feel I can.

That would annoy me also (even though I'm mostly a seller).

I've had a few cheeky offers and I've simply declined them and added a short message saying why e.g the item is in very good condition and I priced to sell so do not want to discount further.

Or in one case I was happy to counter offer and meet in the middle and another I suggested that as I do bundle discounts if they also bought a similar item from my they'd pay their offer price by default getting a discount on both items.

Fundamentally I don't mind low ball offers. It's up to me if I accept it or not and takes 30 seconds to respond.

HoliHormonalTigerLillyTheSecond · 30/08/2023 16:12

@Lovemusic82 things are only worth what someone will pay for them. Just tell them your best price.

Exactly this.

It's silly to be offended by an offer.

TooExtraImmatureCheddar · 30/08/2023 17:23

I've had some great things - Me&Em flowery kitten heels for £10, still in the box, two real leather jackets, one new, one used, for £35 and £20, a Topshop Petite trench coat that fits perfectly for £20. With the trench coat, the seller forgot to include the belt but when I messaged to say so, she apologised and posted it immediately. I was really impressed! Oh, and I had two great swimming costumes, can't remember from where, BNWT. And a cashmere jumper from M&S which I really like.

Tips - you need to be really honest with yourself about sizing. Err on the side of buying bigger if in any doubt. Scrutinise every photo and don't buy things where there's only one photo, or the description is one line, or it doesn't say what the fabric is. If it claims to be a specific brand, there should be a photo of the label. I've never spent more than £35 because I would worry that the item would be fake/not fit/in poor condition. And tbh I only spent £35 because I was pissed, but I've worn that jacket loads so it worked out ok. I won't buy super-cheap brands eg Shein/Primark or even H&M/New Look, because for the price of most items I would be better off buying them from the actual shop and having normal consumer protection. Also I find H&M very hit and miss in terms of quality and fit so it's not worth it.

It's also not great for basics. I looked for a nice black cardigan, preferably cropped, BNWT, and came up blank. I don't think people sell plain decent basics because they wear them to death instead. I think where it shines is for more expensive things like coats that just last longer.

Sorry to barge in but has anyone had issues with selling and parcels not being delivered and returned recently? I've had 3 in 3 days and the buyers are equally baffled. A couple of locker delivers and one home.

Yes! Currently experiencing this with Inpost. No reason given just apparently can't deliver the parcel so are returning it.

I’ve switched off Inpost as an option. The lockers were always full. Very annoying.
