I thought Bilbo Baggins looked young for his age.

No. Young people don't have a clue. After you age out of their orbit they just see you as part of a generic lump of older people. The most accurate guesses of age come from those in your own age group.

I did say younger not young though. I do agree when you are very young everyone over a certain age is just old.

AppleTurnover1000Degrees · 09/08/2023 12:39

I get told I don't look 50. I don't really know if I do or not. I'm just me with a few more wrinkles than I had at 40. Maybe they are just being kind. I know I don't look old for 50 but no-one knows what the future holds.

No way would I put a picture on a public forum though.

I also agree with PP's who said that you have to see people in real life as it's about more than just your face.

@Janieforever but then some photos genuinely aren't
I was told I posted a filtered photo (not on here) and it wasn't Confused I just took it and posted it. No beauty mode or whatever, IG filters, FB filters
I wouldn't mind but if I've ever filtered something I've said!

I think it was just the good lighting Grin
This was part of the pic (I've zoomed in)

I would guess that you are between 45-48

Bilbo Baggins was 50 in The Hobbit.

I'm so confused. Did Martin Freeman play Bilbo and he was born in 1971?

Bonfire23 · 09/08/2023 12:46

@Siouxiesiouxiesioux I didn't ask but thank youSmile

Hobbits don't age like humans.

Frodo was 33 in LOTR...Bilbo was 111.

Bilbo Baggins drank plenty of water and used retinol.

And he had the Ring of Power!

Evil and corrupting it might be, but bloody hell, can it preserve collagen!

I don't think I was paying very good attention when I watched LOTR.

There is a far less stereotypical view of aging and what's age appropriate these days.
I remember feeling sad when my mother decided it was time to cut her hair - it was dark brown, down to her waist and she used to plait it and coil around her head like a crown. She had it cut short and permed as she was "too old" for long hair at 43.
My aunt was always reminding us that she needed special treatment because she was "nearly 60, you know!".
Also there's much more awareness of the damage the sun and smoking can do to the skin now. I'll have sun damage from the 70s when my mother was always encouraging me to "play out in the sunshine". We hardly ever used suncream and a common pastime amongst bathing costume-clad children was peeling sunburned skin off each other's backs.
A couple of times my nose peeled so much it bled.
Even dying one's hair was looked upon a bit askance. My mother did but my MiL didn't and thought the practice a bit tarty even by the time I met her.
My SiL still doesn't like to admit she dyes her hair and will only admit to "a rinse" now, presumably due to her mother's views.
It's very hard to believe now but there was a definite flutter amongst my parents' generation when Lady Diana (as she was then) said she had blonde highlights put in her hair.

LOTR - The elves aged 'better' than the hobbits, even those without magical rings Confused

DrSbaitso · 09/08/2023 14:28

Elves have their own magic and don't die of natural causes.

LuciferRising · 09/08/2023 14:29

The elves did live for thousands and thousands of years. Were the ones in LOTR even middle aged?

DrSbaitso · 09/08/2023 14:54

Yes, but now we're talking about LOTR.

AppleTurnover1000Degrees · 09/08/2023 14:56

I want to watch LOTR again now.

TheShellBeach · 09/08/2023 14:58

Ah. Does anyone know if Bilbo Baggins changed his wallpaper regularly?
You know - just in case he was inspired to start a MN thread about how old people thought he looked?

LuciferRising · 09/08/2023 14:58

I want to reread it but worry I'll not enjoy it as much as I did 25 years ago.

Do hobbit holes have wallpaper?

He had the Ring of Power, it preserved him pretty well.

I think you will!

It's a great one to reread.

DrSbaitso · 09/08/2023 15:11

I will say, he does look younger than eleventy-one.

He did. He kept up to date with the latest patterns, as a sort of foil to account for his youthful appearance as people were growing suspicious.
