@Janieforever I'm actually glad you can see it. So many comments about how skin isn't that smooth and the heavy filter I had used and I was Confused

Bonfire23 · 09/08/2023 07:57

@Janieforever but then some photos genuinely aren't
I was told I posted a filtered photo (not on here) and it wasn't Confused I just took it and posted it. No beauty mode or whatever, IG filters, FB filters
I wouldn't mind but if I've ever filtered something I've said!

I think it was just the good lighting Grin
This was part of the pic (I've zoomed in)

That photo does have some smoothing feature on it, from the phone. Mine does the same - you can see pores on my cheeks and nose but on the area at the side of the nose it’s very smooth. My phone does this on me - most modern phones have a smoothing feature like this

We don’t know what you look like in real life, so cannot do a comparison. So if people who know you said it looked filtered they are comparing to the real you. As such, yes it could be lighting and a minimal noise reduction your phone did automatically. Only you can say if it’s an accurate reflection of your skin.

however, the discussion is about granny and her photo is heavily enhanced.

What is it about women who think they look young that triggers the stampede of the spiteful to tell them otherwise? What possible harm does it do to anyone if someone is happy about themselves because they believe, either rightly or wrongly, they look younger than their years? I'd much rather another woman be positive about her appearance than not.

Some people are just spiteful, as you say. I once had a poster tell me, in style and beauty, that they absolutely guarantee that I look older than I actually am because I said that most people , when meeting them at first, would have guessed I'm younger than I am. I don't have wrinkles or lines or eye bags etc.

They said all those people (practically everyone) are just being extra polite because I look so old and there must be something wrong with me to think otherwise 😂The poster got very het up and vehement about it for some reason.

Without having seen me or my picture.

I do look younger than I actually am, most people I grew up with does, everyone I went to primary school on my facebook does, anyway. We were 80's kids and I think a lot of us 80's born look younger than our age, even the boys. In my case it's probably down to not having children.

To be fair, @SheRaaaaa , many threads get started on here by people claiming to look significantly younger than their age. No pictures are ever attached. Now, if you feel young and look good, that's great, but sometimes claims get wild.
I also think people have to adjust to people looking better now as they age, without intervention. At 40 you're not heading into oblivion. I think you can look good at any age. It's about health, luck, effort and mindset.

Except you don't. I am sure you look fine, and so do all/most of the people you went to school with, but none of you look younger than you are. You all look your age. Why wouldn't you? Confused

Why the obsession to be thought of as looking younger than your age? And why are people called rude and nasty- or jealous or spiteful, if they say you don't look younger?!

People are just being honest, when they say that if anyone has said you look young for your age, they are merely being polite, or they are bad at guessing ages. Because you do look your age. Everyone does.

No-one is 'bringing anyone down..' It's just that these 'how old do I look' threads are exasperating, because everyone looks their age. Yep. Even you!

If you all look the same you don't look younger. It's because we don't look like how our parents & grandparents looked at our age.

Quartz2208 · 09/08/2023 09:53

@SheRaaaaa i think people do nowadays look a lot younger than they used to.

I remember my grandparents at 50 and they looked a lot older than my friends who are 50 do now. Rather than looking old at 50 that those born in the 20/30s did it is much more 65-75 now I think.

but age does catch up with you all.

so I think if that is the comparison we have how are parents/grandparents looked at this age we do look I think comparatively younger- particularly if make up etc is worn. But if compared to a 20-30 year old we definitely look older!

the op bless her has posted a make up and filter free picture. Make up could get years off

AppleTurnover1000Degrees · 09/08/2023 09:54

Also, I can remember thing 30 was old when I was a kid. 30 is obviously not old.

this makes no sense. If everyone looks younger than they are, then you need to reframe how old you think someone of that age looks!

Younger people tend to be terrible at judging age. They have an idea in their head of what someone in their 40s looks like so when they meet someone in that age bracket, who doesn't match what they think of as middle-aged, they tend to under-estimate their age a lot. I spend a lot of time around teens and they always assume I'm 10-15 years younger than I am. It's not necessarily that I do look that young, but that I don't match their idea of a person my age. I'm often a little older than their parents and the context they know me in, doesn't match the context they see their parents in. Ie, they never see me angrily switching off plugs with unused chargers and grousing about the wasted electricity and how I'm not made of money. They mainly see me doing a sport I'm good at and am very fit from. I'm most usually in great humour while I do it and I treat them mostly as peers. So their automatic assumption is that I'm younger than I am and they don't know that there is too much depth to my nasolabial lines or that my crows feet can creep down too low for me to be early 30s.

That's interesting.

I think in your case it's different though because you sound very fit and fun. I was thinking more of my Daughter and her friends in their 20's. I think my friends are good looking but people in their 20's can clearly see they aren't the same age as them.

Grapewrath · 09/08/2023 11:56

I think it’s all relative and if we compared I’d 40s us now to the Shirley Valentine of the 80s we’d look young, but among our peer group we look our age as it stands today
Most people get told they look younger- I definitely get told that a lot and I really don’t. People like to be nice!

No-one is 'bringing anyone down..' It's just that these 'how old do I look' threads are exasperating, because everyone looks their age. Yep. Even you!

You must know why there's an obsession with looking young, surely? We live in a society where women are told constantly, including by other women on here, that once you age and lose the mythical 'glow of youth' your looks 'fade' you're 'invisible', you need to step aside for young women and so on.
if there's any obsession, it's the obsession with youth being synonymous with beauty, and all that's superior, while aging is weilded as a weapon, and the insult of choice for women like the PP who had the temerity to believe herself to look young at 65. Of course there are many (most?) women who'd prefer to look young. It's disingenuous to pretend not to understand that.
And of course some people look younger than their age. I work with two 50 year olds, and one looks 15 years younger than the other. Clearly then they both don't look their age. Health, ethnicity, lifestyle, genetics, money and time can all result in a person looking significantly younger than the average or supposed appearance of their age group.
And finally, why is it spiteful and rude to insist a woman looks older than she thinks she does? Does that really need explaining? To deliberately take an aspect of a person they are happy about, and argue with them that they're wrong and deluded about it, serves no purpose at all other than to bring them down. The truth, as you see it, adds nothing of value to their lives and simply aims to hurt.
Guessing an age on these threads is one thing. Going out of your way to insist some random women you've never seen can't possibly look as young as she claims....well, why would you?

No. Young people don't have a clue. After you age out of their orbit they just see you as part of a generic lump of older people. The most accurate guesses of age come from those in your own age group.

LuciferRising · 09/08/2023 12:16

I think people can look significantly older than their age - and I believe MN is likely to agree to that - and I also think people can look significantly younger than their age.

For some reason, people take it very personally when you talk about the latter and are very insistent that it is not possible. It is as if they must bring a person down a peg or two.

It shouldn't matter either way. Funnily enough, I am writing a fantasy book where the MC is early middle-aged. I have already nearly decreased her age once to be late 30s and had to really ask myself why. My thought process about what age meant was a little depressing.

Bilbo Baggins was 50 in The Hobbit.

Maireas · 09/08/2023 12:27

Bilbo Baggins drank plenty of water and used retinol.
