Has anyone successfully ditched separates?

I was having a discussion with my daughter (she is 23, I am 44) after a joint shopping expedition that we are fed up with mix and match effort of separates and kind of decided to just stick with dresses. We are both easy figures to dress, though short, and while our styles are different due to ages, tastes, work and social environments, it kind of make sense - no worry about clashing prints, mixing textures. Tights and boots on winter, bare leg in summer.

Has anyone else thought of this and how are you doing with your resolution?

I almost exclusively wear dresses. I own 1 skirt and top and at least 7-8 dresses. I much prefer them.

RuthW · 19/07/2023 16:50

I wear dresses 99% of the time. I never wear trousers and very occasionally wear skirts. Dresses are fab.

SpainToday · 19/07/2023 16:54

Dresses are definitely easier and I feel more put together wearing one

Oldraver · 19/07/2023 16:55

Out of work I almost exclusively wear dresses. Were going away soon and I have packed a token pair of long shorts and a t-shirt

aSpanielintheworks · 19/07/2023 16:56

I only ever wear dresses. Maxi dresses in Summer, short dresses over leggings/tights in the winter.
I am quite thick round the middle and don't have a defined waist so t shirts and blouses that end at the waist make me look fat. Never wear jeans or sportswear.
I love tiered dresses that hide my middle whatever length they are.

ZittiEBuoni · 19/07/2023 16:57

Oh, this is a timely thread. I am considering doing just that, with possible exceptions for floaty beach trousers or leather leggings. Sick of trying to coordinate top and bottom and usually failing.

Sunnydays0101 · 19/07/2023 16:58

The last few years, particularly during the summer, I wore mostly dresses but finding this year I’m gravitating back towards trousers with a few skirts, so I think for me I’m happiest with a mix.

LolaSmiles · 19/07/2023 17:00

Following with interest as I'd like to do a wardrobe refresh and have thought about moving to more skirts and dresses but was concerned that all my outfits would look the same.

Whitesandblueskies · 19/07/2023 17:05

I am so bored of my Jeans and tops wardrobe.

but where to go for the loveliest dresses?

NotAnotherMojito · 19/07/2023 17:18

Loveliest dresses - I guess it depends on your taste. My most favourite ones for summer are from Whistles. Work and occasion wear were Hobbs but getting older now and they feel aging instead of making more mature.

My daughter and I have decided it’s dresses only for our upcoming holiday. So much easier to chuck on with trainers or sandals. Not sure I could do it all year round though, I love my jeans too much!

BuffyTheCat · 19/07/2023 17:25

I love dresses and I have lots of them. But I’m not sure I’d like to give up trousers and jeans. Especially on rainy days. I need my thick wool trousers in the winter! Right now, though, dresses are so comfortable.

DaisyThistle · 19/07/2023 17:26

Good thread. I am working with a woman at the moment who always wears dresses. She looks brilliant every day. i might follow her trend. I feel more put together in a well cut dress too.

letshaveachangeshallwe · 19/07/2023 17:30

I haven't worn separated in about 20 years. Ever. It's very easily done if you're happy in dresses. I wear jumpsuits if I need more cover.

Same here. I only wear skirts because I've still got some expensive ones from years ago, including one from Sofie D'Hoore, but I haven't bought a skirt in years and trousers or jeans in decades.

LoobyDop · 19/07/2023 17:53

Trousers are fine, but I haven’t bothered with skirts for years. Just too much faff having to add a top AND tights. I can do one or the other, not both. And I feel the cold, I can do bare legs until it gets to about 25 degrees.

TheChosenTwo · 19/07/2023 18:17

I wear dresses almost exclusively for going to work or going out.
for day to day I live in gym wear so when I’m wfh I can dash to the gym in my lunchbreak or go on a lunchtime walk but dresses are the best - only one thing to choose in the morning.
I don’t even own a pair of jeans anymore, I hate separates!!

lindyloo57 · 19/07/2023 18:23

I would love to do this, I think I don't wear dresses enough, I wear them mostly on hoilday, but what do I do with all my lovely tops trousers and skirts.

Squirrelblanket · 19/07/2023 18:26

I would love to do this too but I wouldn't know where to start looking for day to day dresses. Also I feel the cold quite easily and don't find tights very warm.

ftyh · 19/07/2023 18:27

Yes me. I'v also a few cardigans and jumpers that work with my dresses though so I can layer up.

Mysteriousgirl2 · 19/07/2023 18:46

I’m the other way round now! Have worn dresses for years and now I’m exploring separates.

The hardest thing I find for work in dresses is that I need a jacket, and I can’t seem to find the right jacket which suits me.

NeverDropYourMooncup · 19/07/2023 18:54

I have. It's completely eliminated any need for coherent thought before 6am. Bra, knickers, frock, coffee.

And it's interpreted by work as always looking smart and professional, even though it requires zero effort beyond buying the dresses in the first place; the hardest thing is finding stuff that isn't all flounces, fripperies and bloody ditzy shite.

Days off usually involve the pleasure of wearing compression leggings and occasionally a pair of stretchy jeans.

YorkieTheRabbit · 19/07/2023 18:54

Always dresses in Summer.
The rest of the year I generally jeans with different types of tops depending on how cold it is.
Shirts either on their own or over vest tops, floaty tops if it’s not quite dress weather.
Tee shirt with cardigans, jumpers and sweatshirts when it’s cooler.
I don’t work so don’t need to dress differently for that.

SoberCurious2 · 19/07/2023 18:55

My dream wardrobe would be just dresses! But in reality I need other things. I do some sport and need sportswear for that. I also have a job where I bend down a lot and have to lift heavy things etc. So sometimes trousers make the most sense. Also I feel the cold so need layers. I often just wear dresses in summer though and love how simple it is to pick and outfit.

Isittoolate1 · 19/07/2023 18:56

I would love to do this as I'm bad at coordinating but live in trousers, gym wear and currently shorts. I just find dresses impractical as I spend most of my time sat on floors playing with small DC.

Do you manage to wear only dresses if you have small DC? Or do I need to wait until they are a bit older to.embrace this?
