Has anyone successfully ditched separates?

I was having a discussion with my daughter (she is 23, I am 44) after a joint shopping expedition that we are fed up with mix and match effort of separates and kind of decided to just stick with dresses. We are both easy figures to dress, though short, and while our styles are different due to ages, tastes, work and social environments, it kind of make sense - no worry about clashing prints, mixing textures. Tights and boots on winter, bare leg in summer.

Has anyone else thought of this and how are you doing with your resolution?

I've worn almost exclusively dresses for the last 15 years. I hate wearing trousers.

MotherofTerriers · 19/07/2023 18:58

I wear dresses 95% of the time. Sandals in summer, tights and boots in winter. Makes getting ready so quick and easy!

Stratocumulus · 19/07/2023 19:04

I’ve just bought 3 new dresses. I’m trying to break away from separates.

I’ve probably got 8 of 9 dresses to choose from but I only wear them out to supper or high days and holidays because they’re “smart.” I need more for that are suitable for everyday/housework days.

I’m glad I’m not alone in being fed up with separates! Hoorah, kindred spirits. Now I just have to get out of the habit of cropped trousers & tops for summer and jeans & tops for winter.

Hungrycaterpillarsmummy · 19/07/2023 19:14

I honestly feel like I do "womaning" all wrong.

I have never heard of top and trousers called "separates". I have never discussed and agreed a means of dressing with my mum.
I feel left out

Sandals to work?

I would love to do this too but I wouldn't know where to start looking for day to day dresses. Also I feel the cold quite easily and don't find tights very warm.

You need knitted wool tights

FFSCarrieBradshaw · 19/07/2023 19:23

No way! I love separates, especially trousers, have plenty of skirts too, there are just so many more options for mixing things up. I do like dresses and have quite a few, but I love thinking up new ways to wear my clothes and just dresses would be too limiting for me.

gogomoto · 19/07/2023 19:25

I mostly wear dresses for work, I do have jeans and tops for leisure

FANCHEA · 19/07/2023 19:27

In theory it's a good idea. However, I hate dresses with "tiers" or floral patterns. Or v necks. Im also fussy about length-nothing short, nothing maxi.
So I can never find many dresses.

I'm actually rediscovering the pleasure of skirts and tops again.

MotherofTerriers · 19/07/2023 19:27

I work from home mostly @Hungrycaterpillarsmummy so just have to look respectable on the Teams camera.

Enko · 19/07/2023 19:28

Very much a dress person is so much easier.

Knitted tights with what shoes?!

FFSCarrieBradshaw · 19/07/2023 19:31

I hate anything print, frilled or flounce @FANCHEA so all my dresses are very plain. Block colour, no embellishment, mainly maxi or midaxi although do have a few shorter cocktails dresses. But day-wear is all longer.

SoupDragon · 19/07/2023 19:31

I'm not walking the dog in the winter in a dress. Plus, I spend a surprising amount of time up trees.

dresses simply aren't practical.

PollyThePixie · 19/07/2023 19:31

I mostly wear dresses now and I will only be another few months before everything in my wardrobe is a dress. They’re so easy to wear.

Squirrelblanket · 19/07/2023 19:52

@FFSCarrieBradshaw Could you recommend where to look for these style of dresses please?

Alwayspeckish · 19/07/2023 20:31

Love dresses but struggle to wear in winter.
what are good winter dresses ? And what colour knitted wool tights?
thanks

villamariavintrapp · 19/07/2023 20:38

I can't relax in a dress..

Or leggins

I like dresses but it's more washing, as dresses are bigger than a top and you wouldn't wash jeans/a skirt each wear.

Cue the whole of Mumsnet telling me how any item of clothing that brushes their leg for two seconds is cleaned straight away ...

ElizaWinter · 19/07/2023 20:47

NeverDropYourMooncup · 19/07/2023 18:54

I have. It's completely eliminated any need for coherent thought before 6am. Bra, knickers, frock, coffee.

And it's interpreted by work as always looking smart and professional, even though it requires zero effort beyond buying the dresses in the first place; the hardest thing is finding stuff that isn't all flounces, fripperies and bloody ditzy shite.

Days off usually involve the pleasure of wearing compression leggings and occasionally a pair of stretchy jeans.

Agree about the frills and shinanigans.

I'd love to wear more dresses!
But I'm 5ft 2 and I struggle to find dresses that don't drown me or they are so long I'm mistaken for a Sith Lord.

Any other shorter ladies recommend day dresses that work on a size 12-14? Thanks

ElizaWinter · 19/07/2023 20:50

Also what length boots are people wearing in the winter with said dresses? Assuming everyone's in sandals, trainers, berkenstocks etc in the summer. Smile

Wear a t-shirt/vest type thing underneath to keep laundering to a minimum.

Boots - for me ( but I’m no fashion stylist!) I reintroduced long boots last winter but only if the dress is long enough to come over the top of them. So no gap if that makes sense. If a shorter than the long boots dress then I tend to wear ankle boots - have some clumpy-ish Chelsea boots and some other ankle boots. With a long skirt o wear a heavier boot. Im quite short and curvy and always feel I look a bit like a child dressing up with the heavier boots although very much like them on others!

Grimwood · 19/07/2023 20:55

Sorry that was to @ElizaWinter
