Has anyone successfully ditched separates?

I was having a discussion with my daughter (she is 23, I am 44) after a joint shopping expedition that we are fed up with mix and match effort of separates and kind of decided to just stick with dresses. We are both easy figures to dress, though short, and while our styles are different due to ages, tastes, work and social environments, it kind of make sense - no worry about clashing prints, mixing textures. Tights and boots on winter, bare leg in summer.

Has anyone else thought of this and how are you doing with your resolution?

OP, I'm a similar age to you. I love my dresses, always have done, I would say I wear dresses about 70% of time in winter and around about 90% of the time, perhaps more, in summer.

I don't have a particular style or a "go to" shop, I like variety. I don't feel good in very high necks though.

I don't see it so much as a resolution as a practical solution which I feel good in. I've never got the dresses with trousers or dresses with leggings look though, that is so not me.

Leggings and jeans have their place in my wardrobe, but they don't see the light of day that often. Formal trousers are a rarity. Although I do sometimes sport white trousers in the summer.

I wear dresses pretty much all summer, I love them. Less faff, less thinking. But I really feel the cold so I need layers in winter and I find that too many dresses have necklines that show thermal vests! And I do begrudge paying out for tights.

While I wear a lot of linen dresses in summer, I do like skirts. However I'm finding it really hard to find nice plain skirts now, it's all dresses. I also love tops (well okay, I admit lots of them are tee shirts!)

turkeyboots · 20/07/2023 08:22

I have gone the other way. I used to always wear dresses but my wardrobe is almost totally trousers and tops now.
Fashion and I aren't getting on though and all the maxi flowery high neck dresses which have been on sale seemingly forever really don't work for me.

I like dresses, but I walk a lot and most of the time want trousers for that. And nowadays I've got problems finding footwear that works with dresses other than sandals. I'm short and sturdy of calf which makes boots well nigh impossible, I've never liked the look of trainers with dresses - they just look clumpy and frumpy on me - and I can't find any nice shoes that fit at the moment at all (enlarged big toe joints, even wide fittings are mostly too tight).

ErrolTheDragon · 20/07/2023 08:45

But I'm 5ft 2 and I struggle to find dresses that don't drown me or they are so long I'm mistaken for a Sith Lord.

That's the other thing, I'm 5'1". I used to sometimes be able to find petite dresses in Debenhams, and one or two from Lands End but other than them I don't like buying online - dresses really do need trying on. The only shop in my city I can think of with a petites range is Next and Ive never seen a dress there I like. I've still got a few dresses I bought in about 1990 when I lived in the US, they had whole shops for petites!

M&S has done loads of petite dresses this summer. I have been looking at their website a few times a week as they have been adding them bit by bit. The search function is shocking on the M&S site for petite, I have to search ‘petite’ (not ‘womens petite’ or anything) and then sort by ‘newly added’. And even then you still get regular fit in there.

But I’ve bought six or seven lovely petite fit dresses and have returned at least that many due to poor fit around my ample middle.

Thanks...if I manage to find some shoes I might take a look.

LadyEloise1 · 20/07/2023 09:09

I usually only wear dresses.
Or tunics / big shirts with leggings.
I just don't get the jeans love.
On "Dress Down Day" at work colleagues would be thrilled to wear jeans but they looked nicer in their normal work clothes i thought.
On many, jeans aren't very flattering.
Trousers make me look like a sack of spuds - apple shaped here - big tum and no bum.

Dontcallmescarface · 20/07/2023 09:28

I don't own a dress or a skirt. Neither make me feel comfortable or suit me.

Judystilldreamsofhorses · 20/07/2023 10:26

I love a dress in summer. There’s a Monki cotton/seersucker one which I have in various colours, and with trainers or Birks it’s just perfect.

In autumn/winter I am 100% jeans and cosy knit though, and right now it’s 15 degrees outside (Scotland) so not really dress weather.

EuniceNewtonFoote · 20/07/2023 12:31

Bra, knickers, frock, coffee

🙂this is going to be my mantra from now on!

RatherBeRiding · 20/07/2023 12:53

I am very short (5ft exactly) and tend to wear what taller women would class as a long tunic, as a dress. Joules and White Stuff are great hunting grounds - i wear over plain black leggings.

CashmereDarling · 20/07/2023 12:56

This is actually the first summer I'm a long time that I've been embracing separates 😂
Probably because I can now fit into linen trousers that make me look nice, ditto cute summer skirts.
Plus, yes there are petite dresses out there but not many of them seem to fit or suit me 🤷🏻‍♀️
And they are hideously expensive this year too.

FindingMeno · 20/07/2023 13:08

Love dresses.
I am so over the discomfort of waistbands!

Helpimfalling · 20/07/2023 13:16

Can I just say, how much I missed the use of the word 'frock'
Reminds me of childhood 💜

LadyEloise1 · 20/07/2023 13:21

If it's 15 degrees here in Ireland it's definitely dress weather with bare legs @Judystilldreamsofhorses Smile

ElizaWinter · 20/07/2023 21:45

Bought two completely dresses which arrived today. Both look bad and are going back. 😬
