Has anyone successfully ditched separates?

I was having a discussion with my daughter (she is 23, I am 44) after a joint shopping expedition that we are fed up with mix and match effort of separates and kind of decided to just stick with dresses. We are both easy figures to dress, though short, and while our styles are different due to ages, tastes, work and social environments, it kind of make sense - no worry about clashing prints, mixing textures. Tights and boots on winter, bare leg in summer.

Has anyone else thought of this and how are you doing with your resolution?

Wear a t-shirt/vest type thing underneath to keep laundering to a minimum.

I don't wash dresses every wear.

Sodop · 19/07/2023 21:02

For all you dress wearers, don’t you end up wearing the same dress loads of times? I like wearing different things to work, and separates have loads more combinations (this skirt, plus x different tops, or those trousers plus x different jumpers). But I agree, dresses are easier, it’s just the question of repetition. Or does it not matter that you wear the same dress (& therefore the same precise outfit) lots of times?

Also what length boots are people wearing in the winter with said dresses? Assuming everyone's in sandals, trainers, berkenstocks etc in the summer. Smile

Winter dresses and boots - what style? | Mumsnet

I'd like to try wearing dresses and boots (long or short) this autumn and winter instead of my usual trousers, but have no idea where to start or what...

I did this years ago.
I am high waisted, so have a shorter upper body and long legs.
I had this idea that it would be easier and more suitable, but after a year or so of doing it i got bored.

A lot of my life involves being outdoors in all weathers. Most dresses were not composed of natural fabrics, so didn't help in very hot weather or very cold.
I am not a clothes snob and think a lot of the natural fabrics camp are overthinking it, generally, but synthetics outside of sportswear didn't really work for me.

If you avoid separates you are either trapped in frocks or dungarees. I gave up because of the patterns to be honest. I didn't want to look like a frigging potted plant at my mother's funeral. If there were subtle patterns and simple lines, I would be more tempted. Wearing dresses is much much EASIER all round. I have some of those lucy&yak things and whilst the pockets are far too low i still love them. I have a few nice dresses but these days they only come out on certain occasions.

I gave up jeans for 5 years. Now I am back to them but with a mid rise and loose fit. They look and feel great under a long winter coat. I like the slouchy feel of jumpers and soft cardigans, and the feel of a linen tee in summer. I could only find such fabrics on dresses at Poetry and Wrap, and they were all too voluminous or tiered.

If i am honest, it is do-able. And lovely. Dresses generally always look good. I am just not that type of person, so I went back to separates.
One thing is for certain, single items work out more affordably. When I wore dresses, even from higher priced brands, my over all expenditure was lower.
One cool thing about the time I only wore dresses was tha simplicity, it is so, so easy to get dressed.

I have dozens of dresses. I don't know how many.

NancyJoan · 19/07/2023 21:05

I enjoy putting outfits together, but I do wear mostly dresses in the heat. In the winter I’m in trousers, never jeans, because I can’t bear to wear tights.

Grimwood · 19/07/2023 21:08

@ElizaWinter - brogues of course are another option ( again I can’t seem to wear them but think they can look fab)

Laiku · 19/07/2023 21:09

I don't get the thing about needing tons of dresses, who cares if we rewear them throughout the week? I would be happy to give the middle finger to anyone who even considered judging me for having a small amount of clothes.

Excessive consumption sucks.

Grimwood · 19/07/2023 21:13

I mainly wear dresses, but do like having some separates ( on the whole skirts) as I think it’s fun to change my look around slightly sometimes - and that is a bit easier with separates.

Im a fairly short high waisted hourglass so dresses generally as well as being easier tend to look more flattering ( although in my dreams I’ve always been a trousers and blouse willowy Virginia Woolf type 😁)

Usernamen · 19/07/2023 21:23

I hadn’t bought a dress in years (I live in jeans/trousers/leggings) then bought one recently from Faithfull the Brand and sort of ‘rediscovered’ dresses as it’s just perfect. I really recommend FtB for pretty but not overly feminine dresses.

ArseInTheCoOpWindow · 19/07/2023 21:25

I freeze in tights in winter unless l wear 2 pairs. Then l get uncomfortable and itchy. Like wearing a nappy.

Jeans for me all the way.

Tontostitis · 19/07/2023 21:29

Just counted and I have a truly shocking 76 dresses,

Tontostitis · 19/07/2023 21:30

I also own 4 petticoats in black and nude in 3 different lengths and 5 cardigans summer is fitflops and dresses winter is petticoat dress and boots. I can't be arsed with separates

🤣🤣 that'll keep you going for a while!

Beachbreak2411 · 19/07/2023 21:33

I pretty much only ever wear dresses!! Very occasionally a skirt and top but don’t feel comfortable really.

honeyfox · 19/07/2023 21:35

I can't wear dresses, I don't know why. I'm very petite and probably two stone overweight. The last time I wore a dress to work people stared at me and thought I was pregnant.

I can't seem to wear them either but agree they look good on others!

I seem to gravitate towards very relaxed scruffy looking clothes and shoes these days!

No manmade fibres for me, due to my new internal heating system - in my fifties and I'm struggling to find dresses that don't make me look older or fatter than I actually am. Grin

TheOGCCL · 19/07/2023 21:45

I’m the total opposite. Love separates, I mix mine almost ad infinitum and never as a result wear the same outfit twice. I think I’d get very bored just shoving a dress on every day, especially if I’d already worn it that week. Not to mention dresses are too fussy, flouncy or formal for me, too cold most of the year and like pp make me look like I’m in the early stages of pregnancy. I just don’t find dresses ‘cool’ especially as I age.

TheOGCCL · 19/07/2023 21:49

I’m going to a formal wedding next week and wearing separates!

NoSunNoSun · 19/07/2023 21:58

I mainly wear dresses, for example I have over 20 summer midi and maxi dresses. I do have some separates too and probably where them one third of the time.
I wear separates more in winter especially as day wear.

ElizaWinter · 19/07/2023 23:12

Thank you @NatashaDancing that boots thread was very helpful and has given me some ideas x

I'm petite and a bit overweight. Swing/skater dresses are really flattering on me.

DelphiniumBlue · 19/07/2023 23:21

I wear dresses in summer as I find trousers too warm. I think linen trousers are not nice, they look dreadful on me, as do most wide leg trousers.
In cooler months I will wear straight leg trousers with a long shirt or jumper, but dresses and chub rub shorts, footless tights or leggings are my first choice. Knee length dresses and bare legs are better for warm but rainy weather, longer dresses on other days.

Meadowfly · 20/07/2023 06:48

I’m always cold and need to wear a jumper (tidy cashmere ones for work) so a skirt / tidy trousers is better in winter. I tend to wear dresses more in summer / spring and agree it is easier, but I am a sucker for a silky blouse, and when I want to look serious that’s what I’d go for because it looks better with a jacket. For ‘homeclothes’ every so often I think I’d like to be a casual skirt / dress wearer but I always end up in jeans or shorts.
