Is This OK for a September wedding? I love the style but think it might be too dark?

Side on view looks like a tracksuit - not a great look for a wedding.

Iwasafool · 17/07/2023 11:27

I think it is great. I think it is glamorous and is fantastic for a strong stylish woman.

TizerorFizz · 17/07/2023 12:24

I think lots of people on here wear very glam to weddings but actually, lots of us don’t! We do like good fabrics and a chic look. It’s not a “look at me” event. You are a wedding guest. Not the main event. It’s also a day event, I assume. If it was an evening event, it’s possibly too day wear. It can easily be dressed up to a classic wedding look for an afternoon wedding.

ManateeFair · 17/07/2023 13:26

I think a lot of people here are confusing the question 'Is this OK for a wedding?' with 'Would you, personally, choose this dress?'

Would I wear this to a wedding? No, it would look terrible on me and it's just not my style.

Is it suitable for a wedding? Yes, absolutely. Dress it up with some silver shoes and accessories and you're good to go. It's absolutely appropriate.

Mumsnet in general seems to have a very dated notion of what a wedding guest should wear. If it was down to Mumsnetters, nobody would attend weddings wearing anything but a jewel-toned dress from Coast, a pashmina, matchy-matchy shoes and a fascinator. In the real world, wedding outfits are a lot more varied and modern than that.

I went to a wedding in May and there was a huge range of different types of outfit going on among the guests. There were only two people whose outfits, to me, didn't feel 'appropriate' and they were on a teenage girl who was in a strappy body-con Lycra micro-mini dress, and a man who was inexplicably wearing walking trousers (the kind you get in Mountain Warehouse with zip up pockets) teamed with socks and sandals.

NatashaDancing · 17/07/2023 13:40

You're right - it's not inappropriate for a wedding.

I wouldn't wear it to a wedding as it's so low key. I'd wear to work (Actually I wouldn't as more minimalist than what I wear to work)

JusthereforXmas · 17/07/2023 13:52

It not greatly 'wedding-y' but if you where a guest at my wedding I wouldn't have any objections to it.

It hardly like pain stained holey sweat pants and a vest, if people are dressed up I didn't care if it was this or a fancy cocktail dress or trousers and a blouse or jumpsuit etc...

Maddy70 · 17/07/2023 13:54

It can be really hot in September

And honestly it's not that nice

Themaghag · 17/07/2023 14:14

I'd absolutely wear your first choice for a wedding @noglow! I hate florals and pastels and also begrudge spending money on the sort of heirloom clothes that you buy for a special occasion, but seldom have a chance to wear again. I think you could accessorise dress 1 with sparkly shoes and an amazing hat and look the most impossibly elegant person at the event! Then when the wedding is over the dress could be worn for work and numerous other occasions. However, my absolute favourite dress from those suggested so far is https://www.reiss.com/style/st223309/C53339#C53339 in the teal colourway. In fact, I have a dress that is very similar to this, but in plain navy and I've worn it to numerous different events, varying the accessories to suit the occasion and I always feel amazing in it! There's nothing wrong with your taste - you probably know what suits you better than anyone else - trust your very good instincts!

I am clearly in a minority cause I really liked the two you posted, OP. I can understand other people saying that they'd wear them for work, but the thing is, I definitely wouldn't, everyone who knows me knows that I'm very casual clothes-wise and therefore would consider me very dressed up in those dresses - it's all relative!

Plus anything floral or pastel makes me look (a) washed out and (b) like my mother (love my mum, just not the same taste 😆).

I have been eyeing this one up for a wedding:

Can I echo ManiteeFair - you can actually wear whatever you like to a wedding within reason - jeans and a t-shirt probably not right but if you actually only ever wore jeans but dressed them up what is the problem?? The only person who really counts is the bride and as long as they haven't stated black tie when you could wear what you like - welcome to 2023!!!!

NatashaDancing · 17/07/2023 15:18

motherofcatsandbears · 16/07/2023 23:17

It looks like a cheap dressing gown

It really doesn't. It looks like a smart work wear dress. And it doesn't look cheap.

MsMcG · 17/07/2023 16:23

I love the second one, but either are more than suitable for a wedding. I'm not sure why anyone thinks they're not

But then, I'm wearing a black dress and DM's to a July wedding, so what do I know :)

wholly agree with this. I can understand the idea of dressing up and looking like you've made an effort, but beyond that, surely nobody cares?

There isn't a specific style of clothes for weddings as far as I know, and if there is, there shouldn't be.

It looks like a dressing gown to me, so not I do not think it's suitable

It looks like a dressing gown so no

Some of you have rather lovely dressing gowns I must say!

The Ralph Lauren dress has very casual short sleeves. Therefore it would not do for me. There’s also a big misunderstanding of floral on this thread. It does not have to be ditsy small flowers of indistinct colour. Lots of florals might incorporate emerald, bright blue, bright pink etc. It’s the fabric snd placement that matters. Also some embroidered dresses look expensive. Great for a wedding. Zara Tindall wears stripes quite a lot. She looked great at the Derby this year. Just add a great hat and a fairly straightforward dress looks wonderful. There’s just no need for MOTB dressing or OTT glam.

missmoon · 17/07/2023 18:05

I absolutely love it! I guess it depends on the type of wedding, how formal it is, and the usual style of the guests, etc.

missmoon · 17/07/2023 18:06

I would definitely wear it to a wedding (with heels).

CinnamonJellyBeans · 17/07/2023 18:10

Look at the sleeves. You'd need arms like a gibbon.

Lenor · 17/07/2023 18:27

I think it’s so classy. I’d jazz it up a bit with accessories and sparkly shoes to take it away from work wear, which it would also be lovely for.

RuthW · 17/07/2023 18:29

Not suitable for a wedding (and looks like a raincoat)
