So as an example for the slimmed down Advent, this Prada skirt that showed up in my inbox yesterday. I'd never contemplate buying it but it cheered me up regardless (finally my prophesied Greynaissance is here).

Coos... that is such a pretty skirt. DesmondDog would have it covered in mudspots in minutes, but ooooh!

There have been some fab all grey ensembles in the press in the last few weeks, and my grey Hiut jeans and a grey sweater have been staple outfits since January.

Floisme · 01/11/2023 14:00

Yes, yes to bland. I'm possibly less bothered than some by the sniping and squabbling. I think this board has always had an element of feistiness and I'm not exactly blameless myself.

But what I used to enjoy, in between the arguments, were all the discussions about clothes and what was new - the old 'autumn/winter' threads for example - where you'd get people joining in who had no intention of buying anything but just enjoyed looking and chatting. Aside from this thread and a couple of others (which I won't name as I don't know if they'd welcome the attention) that seems to have all but disappeared.

So yes, we're largely left with either very functional 'I need an outfit for X and these are my requirements' or complaining. It feels like the only things it's acceptable to be enthused by are Vinted and charity shops. By the way I enjoy a good moan as much as anyone but I always find there's a point where it stops being cathartic and starts becoming toxic.

So yes please to a mood board - either here or separate, sounds great. And I love the shape of that skirt (and I don't care what it costs Grin).

Ha ha, thanks Red. I don't do Insta I'm afraid - I waste far too much of my life online as it is!

mm47 · 01/11/2023 16:45

A huge yes please to you doing an Advent calendar bo visual/slimmed down/whatever you can face doing!

Even if there is not much call for luxy fashion in the depths of the country (where I now spend most of my time) I do so love looking and learning about it all! It’s taken me a few hours to appreciate PP’s new collection but in the spirit of fantasy shopping I would need a different physique and lifestyle - I absolutely love those mad zip up to your bottom trousers.

mm47 · 01/11/2023 19:05

Flo I like “your” dress, I would choose the fringe snood thing (if it was fringed in leather). It’s amazing how freeing it is to fantasy shop (I should try it more often 🤡).

Redandblue11 · 01/11/2023 20:22

ohh I could pull this one off any time.

Those brights will chase away any unwanted greynaissance dreariness! (not saying that grey is dreary - I 🩶 grey when I can get the warmth right)

Also, that skirt is gorgeous bo - love a moderate dollop of whimsy. And YY to a mini advent calendar - I joined you all well after the first threads and never really went back to absorb your wisdom.

From your collection flo, I’d take the pink and red silk top to match with red.’s dress

I’m spending a bit more time in London with my new job and managed to sneak away to a Jigsaw and Penelope Chilvers sample sale that was round the corner. They had a fair amount of the Collagerie print dresses for sale, so the bold items may just hang around if people aren’t feeling the bright energy.

Anyway, I came away pleased with greige suede loafers and a few other bits and pieces. Now just need to protect them from the weather!

banivani · 02/11/2023 16:14

Always nice to be called an IT genius, thank you very much. I've posted enough pictures on Mumsnet to have worked it out I suppose ;)

I didn't even see the PP collection as aimed at an age group, just Thin People, but I think Crkd is spot on with it being for people who ar given Space, and Desmond's "art collector's wife".

13K dress oh lord, and no special fittings - it's not ok!

I'd love a not-advent-calendar Bo! Please do!

I just but S&B mostly down to the usual British orneryness. ;)

banivani · 03/11/2023 07:55

I missed the last few posts... That Roksanda collection was really fun, I enjoyed that. Obviously my favourite is the tailored trousers. They are out of stock, since I have such good taste. It's an expensive collection but I'd say within the tolerable for the Jigsaw customer who wants something extra, and the size range is reasonable too. Well done to Jigsaw!

If I wasn't so annoyed with her website I'd go back and have another look at the PP collection after glancing through some effusive reviews, but I don't think I can face it.

Who the hell need a greynaissance. All I can ever fucking get in this Filippa K country is grey and beige and black. Always cold greys too. (Lovely skirt shape though, it'd be nice if we got more skirts in that shape, and I like the thread bits. For the handy and whimsical it would surely not be that hard to do something similar on an existing skirt by yourself?). Grey can feck right off. So tired of it. Grey (grey melange as it was called in my youth) popped up in the 90s here and never ever went away. We need a dark brownaissance.

botemp · 03/11/2023 09:14

Ha, Bani, I supposed I could have saved myself some words by just going with Brits are going to Brit 😂

Hmm, brown is more the colour of peasants in the middle ages, so it would be more like a brown revolt? I keep hearing political commentors catastrophising we're mirroring the lead up to 1848 so you might just get your wish...

I do find the Roksanda collab on the pricey side for a collab. I noticed from my you previously looked at this thing on the Jigsaw site that the collagerie stuff was all in the sale and the reviews of the items were not great.

Anyhow, backlog, Shangpie, thanks for the Joseph links but I feel they've been getting too ambitious with their pricing while the quality has been going down the last few years. I've got some earmarked to look at in the shops, but the weather is still atrocious so it'll probably be a while before I see any.

Volte, I agree it was all very straight up and down bodies although the garment measurements seemed to suggest it wasn't fitted very close to the body. If someone more social than me (by which I mean users of social media platforms) sees anyone reviewing or showcasing the PP clothes on more realistic bodies I'd be grateful for a link as I'm genuinely curious.

And I think I have to disagree with micro's take that PP is quiet luxury, it doesn't feel quiet at all, or quiet as quiet luxury aspires to be. I think as Crkd rightly points out these clothes take up space unapologetically, quiet luxury likes to pretend they don't take up space while actually doing so (that's the quiet part), it's that sanctimonious thing like Bezos calling himself a philanthropist.

And well, we'll have to see, but PP may have just started taking down that pervasive quiet luxury trend with this collection. I'm not sure how far her influence will carry as social media buzz really is a poor indicator of anything these days but we'll see in the next six months both in what gets copied and what actually gets worn on the streets.

As it appears to be only me who is willing to post pics I'll keep the mini advent on this thread.

Xposted with Desmond, I like the dress but personally avoid any knit dresses with a split. It always works against me somehow and comes out weird in the wash, it'll curl in or droop.

OP posts:
banivani · 03/11/2023 09:32

There's not enough brown IMO, and there's still too much bloody camel ie beiiiige. I want everyone to be able to pick a dark neutral that isn't black or bloody dark grey. In shops available to me there are exactly I think two (2) models of dark brown trousers (I'm not counting any pure polyester ones that I just walk past). I've tried them both and they don't fit.

Desmond, I like the dress, but not keen on the split (a personal preference). I used to wear a lot of fitted things like that and found it easy dressing, but since developing a menopausal pouch belly and losing fat deposits on my hips I don't feel like myself in anything like that anymore. :( Anyway my point is I can see why you like it. The two-part thing is versatile too.

Bo, didn't realise it was a call to arms (to pics). I am too erratic to commit, plus not that fashion savvy really. But I could give it a shot?

CatherineMaitland · 03/11/2023 09:40

I love a really rich dark brown. Hard to find the exact right shade though. Last time I bought something labelled "dark brown" online - and shown as dark brown in the picture - it turned out to be more like ginger, or sick if I am being rude.

Every year I want to buy a winter knitted dress, every year all the ones I like I think: eek, too expensive, buy it in the sale. Every year they are sold out.

Waves to Flo and Red. Yes, Somerset is lovely - and I like this end of it very much - always beautiful light and interesting landscapes/sea to look at. I keep telling people that Weston-Super-Mare is going up in the world but no-one believes me.

I forgot to say that my Ukrainian colleagues are mostly doing well, thank you Bo for asking. I found an account on Instagram called KyivitesinKyiv if anyone wants to look at street style from the capital.

EffortlessDesmond · 03/11/2023 10:01

It's the split skirt that's holding me back too, for just that reason bo. Plus I would prefer a slightly looser crew neck. Hence the indecision. But I can see it being very useful.

banivani · 03/11/2023 11:31

You know what they say Desmond, no love no buy. Don't be like me.

I just bought a new brown rucksack (the glamour of my life) and the brown is very ruddy, definite tones of port. Haven't decided yet if it's fine.

EffortlessDesmond · 03/11/2023 13:18

It's one of those things that I'd like to try on in person rather than faffing around online. I need new black jeans too, so I need a big shopping centre. The local one isn't (although there are rumours that Mango is arriving soon--yippee) so I might go to Oxford and maybe Bicester Village on a trip to see my mama later this month.

MmePoppySeedDefage · 04/11/2023 04:42

What is Bicester like these days? I've not been for years. My memory is of people being quite dressed up, as it's so small, you can wear heels that would kill your feet if you had to walk around all the shops in Knightsbridge.

Floisme · 04/11/2023 10:52

Sorry bo if it came across a bit, 'Ooh yes, you run around and do the work and we'll sit on our arses and applaud'. I will cheerfully join in, even if my inbox probably isn't as exciting as yours. And I promise to be saintly in my responses.

I like that knitted dress Desmond, in fact it's made me feel a bit wistful, thinking about how I don't have much call for smarter clothes any more. I can't quite imagine when you'd wear it without the top - if it's cold enough for a knitted dress why would you go sleeveless? - but that's a minor quibble. I agree about the split though - very much in danger of going wavy and wonky.

I'm thrilled to see brown back in the shops again. It's been far too long. My favourite thing to wear at the moment is a brown Wolsey men's jumper. It's not really quite cold enough for it yet but it's such a deep, rich shade and when you look closely at the yarn there's practically every colour on the spectrum woven in.

EffortlessDesmond · 04/11/2023 14:15

I drive past Bicester Village to go to Lakeland, but used to go quite regularly when it was new... it was better then when there were good homeware shops selling nice bedlinens and cookware. Now it's mostly high end fashion and it caters to busloads of tourists on shopping sprees, and it is mobbed. However, there's an All Saints outlet, and the knit dress is something they do most years.

I no longer have much call for dressy clothes either, flo, but knitted dresses (if they're wool) seem to navigate most places with ease... and they are comfortable to wear!

EffortlessDesmond · 05/11/2023 16:40

Flo. I have an ancient transparent/ sheer T shirt (years old, cheap and totally polyester) crinkled top that would look fab underneath the main dress as a pinafore. One colour is spot on match, so it would be an under/over works with a lot of what I regularly wear. I am talking about my thermal base layers here!
