Well. This is the worst news in the (unaffordable, unnecessary clothing) world. Angry

I came here to hide from a baying mob on another thread.

Saw your Sacai question. Clearly not addressed to me but I was curious as I’ve only seen odd bits on various multi-brand websites. They’ve only opened a proper English website, in English, from which one can buy clothes! When did that happen? I’ve already seen things I need badly …

https://www.sacai.jp/en-gb/sets/new-arrival

botemp · 03/10/2023 19:16

Hmm, bit where do they deliver from and is it DDP? Easy returns? <hides the credit cards>

Anyhow, I guess Dover Street Market is my best bet to see some in the flesh, so long as I can tune out the rather annoying staff they have.

No returns on sale items

Phew, my money is safe as there's no way I'm buying at full price.

Oh, and forgot to mention the breaking news, new appointee at Alexander McQueen is Séan McGirr, former head of ready to wear at JW Anderson.

I am disapointment 😑

(He'll probably be fine, but he's no Martine Rose <shakes fist angrily at the sky> and it does make Sarah Burton's exit seem more like it's her idea than that she was shooed out, ah well, we'll probably never know).

Which thread was that? The poster who linked to Christian Wijnants has been given a right telling off for doing so.

I had not heard of Christian Wijnants. I don't think I'll buy anything but really I'm happy to have my horizons expanded.

banivani · 05/10/2023 20:33

Bo, thank you, that was a very sweet thing to say and I felt a bit teary-eyed.

Never heard of Sacai but loved those runway pics! However bored of the website in two scrolls of the mouse - all black and grey and clearly doing nothing for my dopamin levels. ;) But I love a drape I do.

And Bo, you're coat is very very nice. Well done! Is it light and delicious to wear?

So envious of you all and your lovely clothes, I'm really struggling. However, I'm needing boots. The chunky sole and filtered down to me now, I'm nothing if not a late adopter. Saw a pair of Laura Bellariva boots on Booztlet but never heard of her and seems to be one of those Italian brands who don't suck up to consumers but assume you know them. Anyway, they are exactly what I feel like getting, but I HATE getting shoes online. I love the brown colour. Please critique them.

In the shops in my town there is one (1) similar pair, from Tamaris (please read that in whispered German, like the ads). They don't seem to be a good fit. They rub at the heel, and I suspect it would get worse. That's it. That's the brown boots.

Speaking of Hermès scarves, I always think of MaiTai's picture book. Going strong since 2009. I suspect she might be a Mumsnetter too. https://www.maitaispicturebook.com/ Personally while I admire the craftmanship a lot I'm not a fan of horses and chains, so I pretend they have nothing I like. When I was an au pair in Paris the woman I worked for got a scarf as a Christmas gift from her boss, and wore it artfully draped across one shoulder in a most Fraaaaanch way.

I approve of those boots, the colour is indeed lovely and that little back tab will make a world of difference getting them on. My only concern would be, can an Italian boot hold up in a Swedish winter?

Yes, the coat is extremely lightweight and perfect for the weird weather we're having at the moment (around 20 degrees but cloudy), although someone did ask if I was associated with the supermarket as it's the same colours 🤔 she did say she thought it was far too nice to be a supermarket thing, but it's in my head now...

People often say 'bet she's a MNer' on here, but how would you know? I'm mostly asking as it's never crossed my mind. Come to think of it my coat are MN colours too, FFS 😑

OP posts:
banivani · 05/10/2023 21:09

She writes DS and other acronyms and is also quaite well-off. German, lives in south of France, often visits London - very plausible!

It’s only proper winter here in the middle for about two weeks, the rest is mediocre. If it’s proper winter I have a pair of winter boots I could dedicate to wearing out, that would be fab actually. But you’re right in that I want to fit reasonably warm socks in them! The colour is lovely isn’t it?

Im sorry for the supermarket reference that’s a bit of a blow 😂

CrkdLttrCrkdLttr · 05/10/2023 23:33

I would be very envious of anyone I saw in those boots, @banivani. The colour is gorgeous. Only, the boots I have with that sort of sole are definitely Not Waterproof - which is odd given their rugged appearance. After a week of tramping across fields in Devon they took another week to dry out. But yours might be better.

Oh dear - presumably a supermarket we don’t have in the UK?! It doesn’t prompt any grocery thoughts in my mind, @botemp! Sometime in the 90s I was between chambers and worked briefly as a Law Reporter at the High Court - where someone asked me if my worlds most expensive JilSander bought to ease a broken heart coat had originally belonged to a nurse, because it ‘looked like a nurse’s coat’. It still stings. Though I still have the coat.

Redandblue11 · 06/10/2023 09:19

And I am envious of your boots you miss Bani!
it sounds like you are covered for proper winter there, so I would be grabbing those in a rush.
googled them and seem good(?!)
Now I want them too.

botemp · 06/10/2023 09:59

I'm fairly sure your 'mediocre' winter would still turn an artfully turned out Italian in a double face cashmere coat into a popsicle, Bani. Unless climate change has changed things in Sweden that much since I was last there in winter.

Alright, those are good clues, MN does seem to have quite an overlap with old school bloggers. It doesn't quite work like that any more, see the hilarious recent thread about influencers started by MNHQ 🤣

Crkd, the worst thing is, I'm probably guilty of having slipped similar about someone else's clothes too. Associations can sometimes just overwrite any appreciation of a well thought out design (not that I'd classify my own coat as that, I'm an absolute amateur).

OP posts:
microbius · 06/10/2023 12:54

I like the boots, bani, my only concern and the reason why I haven't bought any of such-like footwear is that they are repairable (?) I am heavy on my heels (which also wear out unevenly) and for me it would basically mean boots for one season only. I'd like to be wrong about their repairability!

Floisme · 06/10/2023 14:58

When I took my Margaret Howell overcoat (£17 - my finest charity shop moment) to the tailor for alterating, he told me it looked like a funeral director's coat. He did a good job though.

Another fan here of the boots bani, and particularly the colour. Yes why are clompy stompy boots always black, huh? Aesthetically I prefer the shorter one (that's assuming one is actually shorter and it's not a trick of perspective?). But that's just me - I like my boots either ankle length or knee length, nothing in between.

mm47 · 06/10/2023 16:48

Another bite for the boots Bani(thank you autocorrect I mean vote). As it can be so hard to find stuff truly to fall in love with I think it’s worth checking what aftercare is possible. Eg reheel/resole.

mm47 · 06/10/2023 16:50

£17 faints with envy what a top treasure find Flo plus if it’s as sombre and severe as your tailor implied I bet it will be in style
forever.

banivani · 06/10/2023 20:25

God Flo, 17 quid for an MH coat is so amazing.

Dithering over the boots. They are 1800 kr with discount, which is just that bit more than I'd love to pay. Stupidly the site advertises a lower price that you can get if you buy more. I don't think this is legal. Had my heart set on 1500 and was surprised at checkout.

Agree that it would be gut-wrenching if they fell apart! That's why it's better to buy IN A SHOP, easier to complain.

I am also 100 % the sort of person to blurt out any associations I might have to someone's clothes with no thought to how they'll take it...

botemp · 06/10/2023 20:43

Yeah boozt is the worst for that. They call it 'potential price' or some bs like that. Sometimes the same item in the normal Boozt store is cheaper than the Booztlet outlet site. It makes very little sense and puts me off shopping with them and also Booztlet sounds like boat slut in Dutch 🤢

Any discount code that might work, more likely to on the Boozt site if it's on both?

I don't know if I even want to comment on Flo and her £17 finds, I'm just going to assume she regularly rolls out a sleeping bag in front of charity shops to get first dibs or something...

OP posts:
banivani · 06/10/2023 20:52

Got the boots. You're right, it's Booztlet. Shite site. I should report them to the ombudsman. Got a discount that covers the return shipping if they don't fit...

Floisme · 07/10/2023 10:04

I feel obliged to add that the coat cost me another £50 in tailoring bills! (It was 2 or 3 sizes too big.) But still the bargain of a lifetime and how that particular shop came to have it I will never know - I go back there every couple of weeks and I've never seen anything remotely like it. Yes it's very austere, very sombre, although charcoal not black so I was quite surprised at the funeral director comment.

Good buy bani, hope they work out.

MmePoppySeedDefage · 07/10/2023 13:11

A great big Merci to the kind poster who recommended Ultramod for my Paris button hunt. I found the perfect ones there. It would have been worth a trip even if they hadn't had the right buttons for me because it is such a wonderful place.

It's also just around the corner from a Repetto shop where I bought myself a pair of black patent leather flat Zizi lace ups in the most gorgeous soft patent leather. I didn't know you could get pliable patent.

Redandblue11 · 08/10/2023 09:43

Nobody will ever come close to your bargain buys Flo. Even if the tailoring is £50.

We seem to be been having a summer now 🙄, sunshine is welcome … but all my A/W has made its way to the front rows of my wardrobe, and the rest is bagged up.

Redandblue11 · 08/10/2023 09:43

Your shoes sound fabulous poppy, would love to see a photo of them!

Floisme · 08/10/2023 10:27

What you all need to remember is I've bought some absolute stinkers too over the years! When something's a one-off and there's a good chance that, if you go away and think it over, it won't be there when you come back, and if relatively speaking, it doesn't cost that much, then your judgement flies out the window. And that's when you can see and feel and sniff the item and try it on first. I do think it's time we were more honest about it - I keep meaning to start a thread.

MmePoppySeedDefage · 08/10/2023 10:28

Here they are red. I do like delicate shoes, and these are. They come with either leather or rubber soles.

Those are lovely dainty shoes Poppy, glad you liked Ultramod and managed to find the buttons there. It's such a lovely shop. Hope you had an enjoyable time in Paris Envy, the weather must have been nice.

Flo, what I've always wondered about the serial charity shops, how much do things actually end up costing if you take in the money wasted on duds and spent on alterations, cleaning, etc.
