I love the idea of you being troubled by a skirt flo but it does look good even if it is the antithesis of MHL.

Voltefarce · 16/08/2023 19:43

I am also a mallen wearer.

But not a skirt wearer. I cannot find a style that suits me. Actually, that’s incorrect. Mini skirts suit me but are not appropriate for work or running around after a toddler, and so are out of the question.

I am very jealous of the ability to wear the beautiful skirt.

quirkychick · 16/08/2023 20:40

I now have reverse Mallen streaks: my hair is very silver but I have 2 dark streaks, one at each temple. If I hadn't dyed it for so long, I might have had one, as my dad did and we have the same hair.

Volte, I can manage mini skirts with thick tights/heattech leggings in colder months with dcs (though it's just dd2 now, not a toddler but counts as one with SEND).

ShangPie · 16/08/2023 21:02

ah bo, didn’t you get the mallen memo? <head tilt>

the podcast is pretty NPR, so feel free to skip to just over halfway to get to the fashion chat. Or do what my friend does and listen at 1.5x speed to absorb more, faster (so she says)

I like the bold collars and mad fluffy jacket in that collection, but I can’t wear black or white at all as they make me look dead. Reminds me of you blue-eyed folk being cautious with your blue tones.

MmePoppySeedDefage · 16/08/2023 21:57

It's not Chanel, but I got a brand new Paul Smith black fine wool jacket (still with tags) for £34 inc postage on Vinted last week.

It's not from this season, but it's a very useful garment as it goes with trousers and dresses. I'm short and slim, so the fact it's neat means it suits me, whereas the bigger cuts that are fashionable now just drown me.

mm47 · 16/08/2023 21:59

Ok Shang, I had no idea. Need to know for future reference- what colours do suit you? Because it’s not just about eye colour but also skin tone? And just to emphasise- I want people to look their amazing selves.

mm47 · 17/08/2023 04:54

shang sorry should’ve replied to your question: just a bit shit is the sweet point. It’s only a bit shit and most importantly you had fun while making it, so you will keep on doing it and the more you do of whatever it is (paint/sew/cook/garden/get dressed, etc) the better you get - without striving for perfection and failing and not really enjoying yourself at all (so doing it less often, but expecting better results). I hope this makes sense because it’s immensely freeing; we’re brought up to be results-driven (hence my playroom which is rammed with untouched materials) but weirdly if we play and enjoy ourselves we get far better results.

botemp · 17/08/2023 09:48

Envy Shang, off you trot to your little private members' club. £5 you named the WhatsApp group The Mallen Streak Preachers, you, exclusionary meanies...

Yes, mm I call it the practice of practice. If you're overly pleased with your results you're probably doing it wrong. Artists are miserable bastards for a reason, embrace the grumbles (but not too much, I'd rather not be responsible for another Adolf).

I liked the gold bustier, and in my (long gone) nightclubbing days, it would have got a lot of wear. Not now with the wrinkly decolletage and not quite washboard abs.

I also have a (weedy) mallen streak that's much whiter than the rest.

Redandblue11 · 17/08/2023 14:22

Non-fashion chat below warning 😀 just me and my woes, which are a massive relief now.

The bloody wait is over and is good news. That was f* stressful.
I ended up calling my private insurance as advised by a friend which I did not think I needed cos I had been sent to a ‘fast track’ as they were concerned. Anyhow, yesterday I called and this morning saw specialist, did a couple of scans and tests and all a big Zero. They had to do a small procedure as it was a very big cyst as mentioned by a couple of people that saw it. But is clear.

I think I need to admit that I am in the peri and my hormones and body are running blind and causing havoc. Never paid too much attention before as I am not having any classic symptoms (yet) but I have slightly noticed some changes in my body. I know Flo has written here before about this period and now I think I start to understand.

Thank you for listening you fashion lot. Now back to think what I put on Vinted and what not ( not the YSL, what the hell was I thinking lol)

botemp · 17/08/2023 14:32

Excellent news that it's benign Red. Now what extravagant outfit are you going to get (or unearth out of the back of the closet) to go out and celebrate 💃

OP posts:
mm47 · 17/08/2023 16:02

That absolutely brilliant news Red so pleased you got onto it. Now go celebrate! 😘

EffortlessDesmond · 17/08/2023 17:27

SO relieved for you Red. That is the best news. Open the fizz!!

quirkychick · 17/08/2023 17:34

That's great news, red. It must be such a relief. As someone who has just come out the other side of peri - yeah, it can seriously not be fun. The last 2 yrs on HRT have felt like I got my brain back and was not actually going mad.

ShangPie · 17/08/2023 17:42

Red, great news!

I like the idea of practicing practice… I definitely need more play-as-practice.

Sorry for being a fake mean girl bo. At least you have a contender for the next thread name…

I'm in London and had a rare hour to myself so popped into the RA for a wander. Spotted this postcard that I thought you might enjoy

EffortlessDesmond · 17/08/2023 20:27

That's charming Shang, but I would have preferred to be ruthlessly competent in professional practice.

MmePoppySeedDefage · 17/08/2023 20:37

So pleased for you Red! Time to treat yourself to something, to celebrate, I think...

Redandblue11 · 17/08/2023 21:31

Thank you all.

This year I want/need another trench coat. I will look for one. I think my budget will be something like up to £200 ish (can stretch a bit), it can be pre-loved.

A pair of boots, I definitely need a new pair. That needs to be new. I don’t really do second hand shoes.

Redandblue11 · 17/08/2023 21:35

Shangpie did you go to the summer exhibition?
was that part of it?
I read that as an irony.

Voltefarce · 17/08/2023 23:39

Great news @Redandblue11!

CrkdLttrCrkdLttr · 18/08/2023 16:07

I’m also glad you’ve had good news, @Redandblue11, and that you didn’t have to wait long. Waiting is grim.

I have beaten you to new boots. Legres, knee high, in the Matches sale. Just arrived. Deliciously reminiscent of my 1970s’ childhood. Fit perfectly. No zip. But I can’t bloody get them off!

Clearly I haven’t learnt from the Mulberry wellies incident about a decade ago. Loveliest wellingtons ever, and they chased around the country to find the last pair in my size. Opened the box …😍😍😍 Tried them on … I honestly thought I’d have to go to bed in them. I think I cried. It took hours and hours to wrestle them off my shamefully substantial calves. And here we are again. I may well have to knock on a neighbour’s door. Or visit my least distant relative.

botemp · 18/08/2023 16:42

Oh no, have you tried lying/sitting on the bed and holding your leg vertically upwards? That usually pulls the wider bit of the calf down and should loosen it enough to then slowly pry it down.

NatashaDancing · 18/08/2023 21:36

Not helpful but a friend once got stuck in a pair of Dubarry boots and broke her toe trying to get them off. If it is of any help they did eventually come off.

CrkdLttrCrkdLttr · 18/08/2023 22:00

And they turned a boot upside down and out fell her toe?! I’m reminded of the bleeding feet of the ugly sisters …

Allelujah - I am released from my torment! Without outside intervention or broken body parts. Or even sticking my legs up in the air. But I’ll remember that for next time, @botemp. Is this the universe telling me I need a husband, so I’ll always have someone around to extract me from possessive footwear?

Anyway, have spent an enjoyable evening watching Foundation and smothering new boots in dark brown shoe cream. In a year or two they should be closer to the ideal colour.

But I’m pretty sure I had these exact same boots when I was about 11 years old … (Legres Instagram photo)

Those are very beautiful boots.
