Don't dye it !!!

mm47 · 15/08/2023 19:03

Oh dear that was a bit controversial! Only thing is, if it’s the wrong colour for you Red you do need to find a way to make it work… polo neck scarf / whatever. I get it that dying is the last resort (no pun intended 😉) - or else (if it were at least a couple of sizes larger) you could always give it to me 🤡.

sorry Crkd that’s not my favourite Eponine look.

(heads off to read Volte’s flagged up article.)

quirkychick · 15/08/2023 19:16

mm yes denim/trainers/t-shirt/insert other modern clothing and tweed to bring it into the 21st century.

mm47 · 15/08/2023 19:17

Quirky we’re on the same page!

botemp · 15/08/2023 20:02

I don't think the colour is wrong for Red, mm. My comments were more along the lines of it's just not as easy as it looks at first glance.

I don't think anyone should adhere to the colour rule of three (so wearing no more than three colours at once in an outfit like eg. the classic Chanel palette) but they can be helpful guides for those that struggle with colour especially when you also consider warm/cool hues.

Easy throw on pieces and outfits do often conform to that rule though and if you're contrast rich in your own colouring you have a little less range IME. At first glance the YSL coat looks like it would just go with anything but the buttons are warm while the linen is somewhat cool/neutral, then the contrast with the hair you're pretty much hitting the three colours already so anything else probably needs to be a bit more subdued.

I think it's one of the more challenging aspects with vintage pieces, they tended to be a look (or just limited by the supplies available) as opposed to standalone go with anything pieces that we are used to now.

Bo Ugh I sound like a groupie but I think you have hit the nail on the head. Wish I could see and articulate like that.

mm47 · 15/08/2023 21:17

volte love that FT piece. I once had a brilliant art teacher who said it was the process that mattered, the resultant drawing/painting/whatever was a biproduct and somehow this article reminded me of this. Really like that he doesn’t care about perfection, how freeing! It seems to be all about the making.

mm47 · 15/08/2023 21:40

… talking of the pleasure of making, here’s something I’m playing with. Whenever I go to Copenhagen I go to Smyks (they sell semi precious stones and pearls etc) and buy something or other but tbh it just gets added to The Box Of Unfulfilled Inspiration. Anyway, last time I was over in CPH I rather went to town on pearls and then last week had the the inspired idea of doing nothing at all to them except threading one set through a suede thong. That looked good so now I’m riffing on it. I really like how pieces can have many different looks; when the tiara exhibition was on at the V&A, I remember hearing an expert on (I think) Woman’s Hour and I remember her saying the super rich would have multiple tiaras and necklaces and so on and the slightly less well to do would have tiaras that would break down into earrings and necklaces and bracelets and I remember thinking I’m with the second rank - they have to be far more inventive and creative!!! (Although maybe they were embarrassed by not being super rich, I love the ingenuity of those sorts of pieces).

so going back to my baroque pearls I’m enjoying how different they can look.

eek just seen on Etsy I’m reinventing the wheel 🤡

Thank you @mm47 . I think so too.
DD (17) has her eye on it. Hmmm

Redandblue11 · 16/08/2023 09:08

Yep Bo you have synthesised perfectly.
and no worries I will no dye the coat.

I am feeling pretty rubbish at the moment waiting to be given an appointment for a scan. Happened very quickly everything after I came back from holiday. I just needed to vent here.

Redandblue11 · 16/08/2023 09:10

Those pearls are just perfect for you mm. I am sure you can make them work in all sort of situations, for me they say autumn.

botemp · 16/08/2023 09:11

I'm sorry to hear you're having health issues Red, hope it goes as best as it can. Are they making you drink loads of that horrible drink?

When the teenagers are eyeing it then you know it's good. But you might just want to padlock it, just in case, Ginger.

Those necklaces look lovely mm, I really like the textural contrast on the all white one. Yes, it's very true about enjoying the process, people are always surprised I have no interest in the final result. Restriction definitely nurtures creativity better (tbh I've always been of the opinion that creativity is a bit of a reinvention of a make do with what you've got for the more affluent).

Sorry, Red, just spotted I misread, I thought you were at your appointment waiting, instead of waiting for an appointment. Hope they can get you booked in asap Flowers

OP posts:
EffortlessDesmond · 16/08/2023 09:30

Rad, more Flowers for you. The waiting is the worst. Fingers crossed. Sending you positive vibes and much courage, and fervent hopes that it turns out to be a big ZERO.

EffortlessDesmond · 16/08/2023 09:30

Red, obviously. Hugs.

Floisme · 16/08/2023 09:32

More Flowers here for you Red. Vent away.

mm47 · 16/08/2023 10:46

So Red next subject for venting please. 🤗

Redandblue11 · 16/08/2023 11:16

Thank you for flowers and hugs 😀 it helps x

botemp · 16/08/2023 11:30

If you're in need of some mindless distraction Red, I can thoroughly recommend the Who Shat on the Floor at my Wedding podcast, it's already completed and very addictive.

ShangPie · 16/08/2023 14:12

Red, hope your scan goes smoothly and that you’re home for a restorative soon 🫖🍰 or Gin

I went away for a few days to contemplate my badger stripe actually being a far more distinguished mallen streak 🤓, and came back to find a new poster with a Chanel skirt. Welcome Ginger! Good luck keeping that skirt away from the teenagers.

On the not-quite-debate about dying YSL linen, I love how bo just cuts straight to the issue with tones. I share mm’s envy of not being able to just ‘see’ it but will try and get my eye in.

Haven't looked at the Dark Academia thread so no idea if the whole Donna Tartt Secret History / American wasp-y preppy college has been discussed, but NPR did a good podcast about it.

Mm, I love the idea of pearls on suede - very texturally pleasing. On the process vs finished article topic, I love making things but then get disappointed when the finished article is just a bit shit not quite right. Does that count?!

botemp · 16/08/2023 16:15

I thought Volte had the mallen streak am I mixing you two up Blush or does everyone have one except me Sad

<Adds that podcast to my long queue of podcasts, ahem, Shang how NPR is it?>

I've not paid much attention to H&M Studio the last few years as it went very Insta unwearable at some point but the new collection looks to be a return to form somewhat. It feels very vintage YSL though (with a bit of the stolen shoulders from the latest Saint Laurent collection). The men's coat is calling my name but I don't think it would actually look good on me. I quite like the white dress even if it does look incongruous with the rest of the collection.

so how many mallen streaks do we have here then?

Yes I like that white dress very much. The coat is a statement for sure but not my thing.
I also like this

Floisme · 16/08/2023 18:22

I love that coat, but it looks very similar to one I've got already so I can admire away while congratulating myself on my great taste.

More troublingly, I am oddly drawn to that long, narrow leather skirt. I'm not generally a fan of a leather skirt or dress, even less so when it looks like I wouldn't be able to walk down the stairs in it without falling over. And yet here I am.

mm47 · 16/08/2023 19:25

I’m a Mallen streak ++ if arrange it correctly at the front it looks like stripes (whereas at the back there’s nothing!)

I like a lot of this collection without actually wanting to wear any of it - I do love monochrome.
