Just popping on quickly to say I love the YSL coat, keep it! I felt the need to cast my vote if it helps keep it from the charity shop pile.

If I were ruler of mumsnet I would insist that every "help me find" or "dress me for" post included: budget; a photo of the OP in an outfit that she feels good in, an inspiration photo of the general style that she wants to achieve (so we know what "glamourous" means to them). It might stop the relentless pushing of floral jumpsuits for every life occasion.

botemp · 14/08/2023 08:43

To add to Elle's list, if it's for an Irish wedding, it needs to be in capital letters in the thread title <gavel> Grin

Red, I think it's the buttons on the YSL coat, they're also contrasting so your kind of need to keep it fairly neutral elsewhere, if they were darker like your hair it would have more range for you but it would also be a lot less special. I suspect it originally had a matching dress or other coordinating item with it so it's been designed more as an outfit/ensemble than something on its own. My theory anyhow, and as previously, I'd really struggle to part with it. It's just too nice, so what if it only occasionally gets an outing. I've never liked the, 'if you've not worn it for X amount of time you have to get rid of it' rule.

Red, don't you dare part with that coat! Some things are so lovely they're worth keeping for the "once in a blue moon" moment when they are perfection. I will haunt you forever if you sack it off!

CrkdLttrCrkdLttr · 14/08/2023 09:15

I too would be reluctant to dispose of a YSL coat, @Redandblue11 - but I can see it might take a bit of thought to incorporate into a 2023 wardrobe.

I’d be inclined to think of it as akin to a shacket, to wear casually over long wide linen trousers or maybe shorts in a similar colour, with just a cotton vest. But then I’d want to roll up the sleeves, which would waste all the cuff detailing.

Alternatively I’d maybe button it all / most of the way up and wear as a dress.

Fun thing to experiment with!

Floisme · 14/08/2023 09:33

Red have you got one of those dress mannequins? I'd just put the coat on display until you think of a use for it. Or hang it on a wall.
Trust me, if you donate it, you will never stop wondering what might have been. You'll be thinking about it on your deathbed.

(I might be projecting a little, yes.)

I'm so sorry to hear about your son's health problems, Desmond and hope they're now behind him. It's interesting to hear you and Natasha talking about teenage sons and their shopping habits. I sometimes used to wonder guiltily if I'd have taken more care of what my son wore if he'd been a girl. Instead I largely left him to it, but he's still inherited my love of tweed overcoats so there's that.

Gingerwarthog that's lovely. I'd forgotten all about those flippy skirts. I'd be off upstairs to rummage for one right now except I know I got rid of them all because none of them would fasten any more and even I couldn't summon up a reason to hang on. (No Chanel though!)

I've not thought too deeply about Dark Academia. I just like tweedy things and it reminds me a bit of the Bloomsbury Set look, to which I'm very attached.

Redandblue11 · 14/08/2023 13:01

You all have saved the YSL coat. Thank you.
I probably wouldn’t have donated , but tried to sell it, but with dress agency fees etc , I doubt I would have got more than £50 which is not worth considering.
You are right too that even if something doesn’t get an outing every month, it doesn’t mean it needs to go. It was a moment of madness.

Gingerwarthog · 14/08/2023 13:19

Late reply re YSL coat but I would definitely keep that.

NatashaDancing · 14/08/2023 18:58

Very glad your DS is better desmond. Horrid and worrying conditions are the eating disorders.

Sorry I glossed over that, glad it's resolved. We had a worry with our son too, but it seems to be that he is just naturally thin. I suppose both his father and I were too. I was under 8 stone at 31 when he was born despite a traditional Scottish diet (long since gone) his father at almost 70 still has a 32" waist.

I spent many happy hours trawling through second hand shops in various European capitals with him.

You beat me to it Bo, I was about to post about it.

EffortlessDesmond · 15/08/2023 08:22

I beat them to it; my souvenir presents from Porto were the sardine-shaped lemon and oil cooks' soaps from Castelbel. Rather cute dangling from a mixer tap, and lasts surprisingly well too.

botemp · 15/08/2023 08:58

Tbh, The Guardian either misses the boat entirely when reporting on trends or they're at least several months behind when the relevance is rather lost. They had a similar article on coquette makeup at the weekend, it was very much a thing in spring but it's definitely no longer relevant in the summer. But it did remind me that a lot of these internet novelty trends are mostly visible in the non digital world as makeup.

I do like the sound of little sardine soaps though, although I should probably confess I'm more of an anchovy girl 🤫

I didn't thinking it needed pointing out but I know tone gets lost in text for some. Sardinecore is completely made up to make fun of turning everything with a bit of social media traction into a -core. It's pretty much heralding the end of the whole -core phenomenon.

Oh I do love some of the Palava prints (not especially fish but books and iirc village scenes) but not the ditsy, dainty proportions of the clothes. I’d want them to be cut with the mad generosity of Casey Casey dresses.

So … contemplating that that would mean either Daniela Gregis or Eponine (I’ll never be grown up enough for either) I went for a browse and found this:

And I’m not sure what I think …

Lovely article in the FT today by Charlie Porter about learning to make one’s own clothes.

Bloomsbury, grief and learning to make my own clothes

Eponine dresses are quite dainty in reality. I have 4 and they're far closer in shape to Palava by some margin than Casey Casey.

I don't have that one !

quirkychick · 15/08/2023 14:04

😁 at the Sardinecore - I am actually a big fan of tinned fish (to eat, a child of the 70s - cheap, quick and good for you).

I'm with flo on the tweedy things and Bloomsbury group appeal. I remember as a student a lot of resentment about the term grunge, as we were already dressing like that a didn't need an American term/trend. But that, I suppose, is the nature of trends.

Redandblue11 · 15/08/2023 14:38

I am very intrigued by your wadrobe/style Natasha (not trying to be rude or necessarily know the details), just thinking of the pieces you have sometimes mentioned to have.

Except Grace Dent (who irriates me immensely) has been enthusiastically reviewing restaurants in her Guardian column which serve tinned sardines.

Eponine doesn't archive its ready to wear very well. 2 of these are thumbnails from the "Shop" app. I can't find a picture of my very first Eponine dress. (Except of me wearing it)

I wear the Dear Josephine to the office and have worn La Luna to a work conference.

Sorry went AWOL - stuff happens. Looks like you’ve been cracking along merrily here!

Ginger the flippy skirt is very sweet.

As Bo rightly guessed I love that YSL coat/dress, Red so I’m really pleased you’re going to keep it. I wonder if you wore a polo neck that would create enough of a block between the dress and your face. Otherwise, it’s linen, couldn’t you dye it to a colour that would suit you better? I love the sleeve detail but would definitely either cut the sleeves off (😱 sacrilege, I know) or roll them up a la Jenna Lyons (well, -ish), so if you were wearing a polo neck underneath you would have another flash of colour from the elbows downwards.

Eponine’s dresses are gorgeous Natasha and would very make dressing for work more fun.

I think sardine core is an excellent riff on all this bloody -core. The tins are beautiful and I’m sure the contents taste vastly better than the standard UK supermarket offerings!

Glad to hear your son is free from anorexia, Desmond it’s a horrible embodiment of mental illness. And must’ve been a very tough time for you all.

quirky and flo I’m definitely on the tweed team - at least Bloomsbury feels a lot less costumey as a descriptor than DA. However I prefer the mixture of a tweed skirt and a denim shirt, for example. Certainly not keen on historical re-enactment levels of detail from any era!

i think a lot of the Palava prints are charming - I’m not really a print-wearing sort of person but I would enjoy seeing them on somebody else.

botemp · 15/08/2023 18:38

Noooo don't dye the YSL 😱

I really enjoyed the FT article Volte, very touching but I'm a bit miffed we only got one not so great picture of his creations, I wanted to see more and especially the inside seams.

It did very much resonate that it makes you see clothes differently. I always thought coats warranted their high price tags but I've totally come off that now. They come together quite quickly and easily, there's not that much crafty drafting or sewing in them, especially the current looser shapes. And on the flip side I'm prepared to pay more for things that I would never be able to make, usually due to specific types of fabric or fabric treatment, I never really placed a high value on that previously.

I'm sorry Crkd the whole eccentric/quirky thing is outside my realm and I try to keep an open mind but to me that dress just looks like Mrs Claus lost her luggage on holiday in Africa and had to make herself a dress with some carpets she found at the market. But, on the right person, I'm sure it'd work, I just struggle to envision who this right person is.
