Much more royal than the Queen 😁

Maireas · 09/07/2023 20:51

Quite 👑

She was reportedly unimpressed by her Scottish aristocratic sisters in law.

Yes I have read several accounts of that. I have also read that the Strathmore and Buccleuch families didn't consider themselves in any way inferior to continental royals, especially those whose families had been dethroned. In fact, it has been reported that Queen Elizabeth (later the Queen Mother) was not exactly overjoyed at the prospect of Philip as a son-in-law.

Maireas · 10/07/2023 06:11

Indeed, @SenecaFallsRedux - but young Elizabeth was determined and wouldn't be disuaded!

Elizabeth did have a hard time because she wasn't willowy and sophisticated. A snobbish outlook. They had to eat crow when she became queen. 😂😂

fuckmyuteruslining · 10/07/2023 10:26

The problem(s) with philip were:

Dethroned royalty not v popular with the British public

All his sisters were married to nazis (inevitable in German upper class circles in the 30s but still)

His father has shagged around a lot

Mountbatten was pushing it so those less keen on him were automatically less keen on this

Mother had had a nervous breakdown

And probably going back to his grandmother who had married one of the gorgeous Battenberg princes who cut a swathe through late 19th century princesses. Queen Victoria thought they were royal enough but others eg Russian and German royal families defo didn't.

Maireas · 10/07/2023 10:32

Very true. They thought Philip was high risk. Although I did laugh at the attributed remark from old Queen Mary that Philip was the kind of Greek that she liked, being 9/10 German and 1/10 Danish!

Queen Victoria definitely didn't have that "pure royal blood" snobbery that was rife in continental royal families. She even allowed one of her daughters to marry a mere aristocrat. Again though, the Campbells of Argyll probably thought Princess Louise was marrying up.

justasking111 · 10/07/2023 12:51

I recall reading that Diana had married down 😂

justasking111 · 10/07/2023 12:52

I do like this outfit, particularly the skirt

Those stripes would be brutal on a less than flat tum, fortunately Emma has one!

I fear that I would resemble an Ordnance Survey map of the Lake District in that one. Looks lovely on Emma Thynn though.

That's certainly what the Spencers believed!

Emma looks great there, very chic. Summery and fresh without being ditzy.

Anouska Mowatt today I felt as if I had fallen into the early 70s. I have a weakness for boho

Bourbon Parma? Must be Spanish royals. That's a very pretty tiara and earrings.

I love Emma’s skirt.

I looked at her and got funky Poppins.

Delightful.

ArcaneWireless · 10/07/2023 16:54

I’m not sure I care for the flowery harlequin frock though.

Lived that dream from 3-6 🤫

Maireas · 10/07/2023 16:55

Ok, not so keen on Zenouska Mowatt. You have to be a bit careful with boho, imo

A European royal wedding (I confess I'd never heard of either of them)...
