While it's good to see older women heading up prime time broadcasts, I won't forget the bitchy remark Whiley made about Alison Goldfrapp's cellulite on live Glasto coverage one year. Even her co-host Mark Radcliffe looked shocked.

BeatriceBatchelor · 24/06/2023 22:55

Only because she still serves as eye candy. If she looked like the average haggard 50-something she’d have been given the axe let’s face it

The average 50 something doesn't look haggard.

Clymene · 24/06/2023 22:59

I didn't say the BBC had paid for the dress. I said the dress had been given to her AND she was paid. Poorly written, apologies

Lentilweaver · 24/06/2023 21:59

I thought the dress @LadyOfTheCanyon posted was the actual dress! 😀

However, I still don't like the real one much. It's shiny, and a crude colour.

I don't understand what you mean by "crude" in this context?

CurlyhairedAssassin · 24/06/2023 23:04

The average 50 something doesn't look haggard.

I think a few of us would beg to differ!

Why?

CurlyhairedAssassin · 24/06/2023 23:08

Oh. Obviously just me then. 😂

Jacopo · 24/06/2023 23:09

She looks amazing. It would be very easy to replicate the dress if you can sew.

BeatriceBatchelor · 24/06/2023 23:11

Here's Jo Whiley looking like the average 50 something I know. No botox, no filler but attractive and most definitely not haggard.

I'm 53 and definitely not admitting to haggard ffs

RunMynamethroughyourbed · 24/06/2023 23:43
  1. Haggard
looking exhausted and unwell, especially from fatigue, worry, or suffering.

no wonder misogyny is so rife when women themselves think it’s ok to say most 50yr olds are haggard.

Dita73 · 24/06/2023 23:50

She always looks great

CurlyhairedAssassin · 24/06/2023 23:50

Jeez. Ok then. Perhaps I should have specifically suggested that many women over 50 have reached a difficult stage of life. Losing or caring for parents, working full time, struggling with hormonal changes, not having time for proper rest or exercise or even skin and hair care, stressing over things like university costs and rising bills etc etc. In some people, women OR men, the strain can show easily. Others are luckier and can weather that more easily. Or am I going to get accused of being ageist now too? Hmm

EbonyRaven · 25/06/2023 00:24

That dress is hideous! Is this some emperors new clothes shit?! Confused

EbonyRaven · 25/06/2023 00:25

Jo does look good though!

Vivfor60 · 25/06/2023 00:30

She looks amazing. I am a year older than her. I don't look haggard despite lots of life difficulties, but I don't look as good as she does! I think she has the advantage of being gorgeous to start with and having good bone structure.

I love that she is wearing socks and trainers with a glam dress. It is great to see older women having fun with fashion.

sausagedogpookie · 25/06/2023 00:37

I personally think she looks fab and I love that she wore it with socks and trainers - why not?!
However, what struck me about this post’s replies is how it’s kind of yet another disservice done to women that joe public can look her outfit up and see how much it costs and then pass comment on it and its price. Can we do that to eg Gary Lineker’s suits at the World Cup? Huw Edward’s suits on the news? Daniel Craig’s pink velvet tux at that premiere? And if we could, would anyone? Would they care? Would it be important? If it even so much as registered on anyone’s radar,it’d then immediately drop off after a few comments of: ‘Yep,quality. Can afford it,looks good.’
If she had worn Primark, she’d have been slagged off for that: Is that the best she can do? On her wage? For national tv?

BrandNewBicep · 24/06/2023 21:15

Gorgeous gown, but its not even silk, but viscose for that price!

I couldn't imagine a Stella McCartney dress being made out of silk, given the silk cocoons are boiled with the silk worm still in them to allow the silk to unravel as a single thread.

Doing a quick google of it, she does use traditionally made silk, has also tried using Peace silk where the worm leaves as a butterfly but is very hard to use this silk as the threads are broken and very hard to source enough good quality peace silk. She is now apparently looking at Microsilk which is a synthetic vegan silk.

Thereoughttobeclowns · 25/06/2023 00:47

I think the socks and trainers look fab and make it look even more stylish. Would also look good with DMs.

JaneJeffer · 25/06/2023 01:05

I've never heard a colour being described as crude before and then two come along at once. How can a colour be crude??

Sodullincomparison · 25/06/2023 01:09

I need to get my TV looked at because the dress looked blue and the socks green but it’s the other way round in the photos.

her outfits have all been amazing so far.

I agree, Jo looks absolutely amazing but as a woman also in her 50s with friends in their 50s Id say Jo isnt a typical example of what a 57 year old woman looks like. Most of us have more wronkles, saggier jawlines and arent as svelte and toned. Wish I looked as good as Jo!

BeatriceBatchelor · 25/06/2023 03:50

You said "if she looked like the average haggard 50-something" and I'm taking issue with that because I don't think the average do look haggard.

Jo has plenty of lines and "wronkles" but looks great because she's so engaged with life. Hence she'll probably look great in her 60s and 70s. I know plenty who do.

Batmannequin · 25/06/2023 07:32

She looks fantastic. In fact, if you type 'Jo Wiley, Glastonbury ' into Google, there are many many pictures of her looking equally fantastic over previous years. Both her and her husband have aged amazingly.

He's aged. She hasn't.
