Broderie anglaise trend

I have just ordered a white broderie shirt to try- not very expensive but pure cotton- and DH says it looks like the tablecloth his nan used. I fear he is right. It's not even polyester.

Do the black or blue ones look any less nan tablecloth ish? Bored of black though.

Your husband's talking nonsense. For starters how would a tablecloth made of broderie anglaise even work? I've got a beautiful special occasions only Victorian white cotton tablecloth which has cut work round the edges but a whole table cloth made of broiderie anglaise kind of defeats the purpose of a table cloth.

(Oh and don't even get me started on unthinking ageism of using "Nan's tablecloth" as a derogatory term)

It's a very nice blouse.

I'm trying to buy a nice blouse and this is on my short list.

I got a lovely blue cotton BA shirt from New Look recently. I love that I feel a bit more covered up wearing it for work but it's still cool on a hot day.

Me too means I can cover arms without wearing cardigan, I got the green

uncomfortablydumb53 · 18/06/2023 03:13

I've always loved broderie anglaise
It always looks so fresh

Seddon · 18/06/2023 04:07

I love BA in navy, and it can be worn year round.

PaigeMatthews · 18/06/2023 05:21

My First Holy Communion dress was broderie anglaise 😊

CammieKennaway · 18/06/2023 07:22

I've just bought a BA full length skirt which I love - I wore it for the first time with a peach silky camisole top and for the first time in a long time, I actually felt really nice and it definitely didn't look like a tablecloth - my only worry was it's white and I kept checking for dirty marks all day 😆
I'd got sick of wearing the same old trousers and gypsy tops all of the time.

RemusLupinsBiggestGroupie · 18/06/2023 07:30

I’ve always loved it. My favourite dress is a black BA shirt waister with short sleeves.

The problem imo is that lovely BA pieces now are often ruined by high necks, big puffy sleeves or tiers - often all at once.

cathyandclare · 18/06/2023 08:17

I love BA, but hate too many frills. I've got a few old bits from The White Company and may just have added this Zara skirt.

I bought and returned a gorgeous Cos BA skirt in green this year, sadly it just didn't fit my shape.

RemusLupinsBiggestGroupie · 18/06/2023 08:27

My other complaint is that often even if there’s a nice shape, it only comes in white.

The Zara dress is beautiful but why couldn't it have been in any of navy, pale blue, pink, yellow, green even orange?

NewDogOwner · 18/06/2023 08:45

There is a gorgeous black skirt in Biden with a broderie hem.

Redlarge · 18/06/2023 08:46

I like it but i think its best suited to night shirts and baby clothes

CatfoodOzymandias · 18/06/2023 08:59

Here's some coloured BA from New Look. I admit I have never bought anything from New Look- it's more DDs style- but these are nice if you like simple cuts and no poufy sleeves or frills. And cotton! White skirts and dresses are lovely but I take the Tube, so no...Green Broderie Long Sleeve Shirt | New Look

@Whatthediddlyfeck i saw this recently in Zara, it’s a beautiful dress.

Has anyone seen any short BA dresses without bloody puff sleeves??

CatfoodOzymandias · 18/06/2023 09:12

I wish this trend of putting tiers on everything would stop. They make me look like a cake.

I am too old for something so cute but have seen some lovely t shirts in Sainsburys with ba ruffles around the arms, might DIY that look.

Whatthediddlyfeck · 18/06/2023 09:19

bendmeoverbackwards · 18/06/2023 09:09

I really liked that one too, till I saw the stupid puffy tiered hem!

CatfoodOzymandias · 18/06/2023 09:40

Ha ha @CuteCillian just saw your contribution. Oh god that's hideous.

And yes @NatashaDancing I will point out to DH how ageist he is being! I think he is confusing lace tablecloths with BA

I've just ordered this from Zara, does this count as broderie anglais?

I have no idea where or when I'm going to wear it though so probably won't keep it unless it looks amazing on!

Downsizeddumpling · 18/06/2023 10:38

@IrisBearded yes I think it does count.

GonnaGetGoingReturns · 18/06/2023 10:41

For me I think a lot of it can look cheap.
I’ve worn it in the past but not necessarily white.
