Broderie anglaise trend

I have just ordered a white broderie shirt to try- not very expensive but pure cotton- and DH says it looks like the tablecloth his nan used. I fear he is right. It's not even polyester.

Do the black or blue ones look any less nan tablecloth ish? Bored of black though.

I wish this trend of putting tiers on everything would stop. They make me look like a cake.

This. I am short and looks even more ridiculous.

I love broderie anglaise. Always have. But it needs to be simple. A broderie top with plain trousers/skirt. I'm not into it head to toe and with added frills and flounces.
Zara and Mango usually have nice broderie stuff.

Chocolatepeanutbuttercupsandicecream · 18/06/2023 13:48

I like it!

Catspyjamas17 · 18/06/2023 13:56

I bought two dresses in broderie from TU, they are so comfortable in the heat. I didn't know it was a particular trend, but just thought 100% cotton rather than polyester might be a good idea in warm weather!

Deathraystare · 18/06/2023 15:44

Love the stuff as long as it is pure cotton no bastard viscose mix to ruin it. No puffy sleeves though.

Downsizeddumpling · 18/06/2023 16:46

French Connection had a long sleeve navy Broderie Anglais dress in the sale.

I could personally never wear BA now, and especially the white colour. I associate it with national dancing, as nearly all the underskirts and blouses are white BA. My children (and I in the past) also have white broderie blouses with puff sleeves to wear as part of their aboyne for highland dancing.

woodhill · 18/06/2023 16:59

I must admit I had a Laura Ashley petticoat trimmed with BA in the 80s

Wish I'd kept it as it's good to repurpose for kids dressing up box etc

RemusLupinsBiggestGroupie · 18/06/2023 17:36

In around 1986 I used to go out wearing a white BA longline bra and a white BA petticoat, often teamed with black Woolworths PE pumps and a biker jacket. I thought I was the bee's knees!

BuffyTheCat · 18/06/2023 19:20

I really like broderie anglaise: it’s so cool in the summer. I have a vintage ivory-coloured broderie shirt which is quite plain (no puffed sleeves etc) and so comfortable to wear.

WhereAreWeNow · 18/06/2023 20:38

@RemusLupinsBiggestGroupie that sounds so great. I would have been totally in awe of your style.

CatfoodOzymandias · 18/06/2023 21:57

Yes, definitely the bees' knees @RemusLupinsBiggestGroupie!

M and S has a lot of nice BA tees.

I suspect I’ve made it sound better than my skinny pale little teenage self made it look tbh! 😂

SaxSick · 19/06/2023 07:50

In the 1970s we used to wear broderie anglaise tiered maxi skirts. Loved the 70s!

SaxSick · 19/06/2023 07:51

I saw a young woman yesterday in a white broderie shirt and plain jeans - classy !

cathyandclare · 19/06/2023 07:53

That sounds great- has anyone seen a less voluminous Broderie shirt? I just look bulky in big baggy shirts.

RemusLupinsBiggestGroupie · 19/06/2023 17:35

SaxSick · 19/06/2023 07:59

Lovely. Such a pity they don’t do a range of colours.

Downsizeddumpling · 19/06/2023 18:28

I saw a non puffy sleeved BA dress at H&M today for £49.99 as well as a BA dress in Primark that was considerably cheaper (can’t remember if the sleeves were puffy). Both were white.

bendmeoverbackwards · 19/06/2023 18:50

Do you have a link for the H&M one @Downsizeddumpling ?

Downsizeddumpling · 19/06/2023 19:40

@bendmeoverbackwards it’s all sold out online and I can’t link it but if you search those details on Google, you should find it (first square image on the right when you do a Google search)

I love broderie anglaise! So fresh and summery.
Your bloke knows nowt.
Plus, ageism is rife on Style and Beauty boards, so ignore any "nana" comments.
Enjoy!

Cheztwix · 20/06/2023 13:37

Despite saying it doesn’t suit me I’ve caved and bought this. Thanks thread! 😂
