My DH suggesting I'm "getting old" because I've ordered from Seasalt

WoofWoofBeachLife · 08/06/2023 07:27

I saw a lovely wee dress last night on Seasalt, I have some money saved for a clothes makeover and decided to go for it. My DH said last night it was nice but isn't Seasalt for older women 😆 I'm 51 in July and I don't think it looks like an OAP website. Now I'm thinking, shit should I send it back?
I just want a few quality pieces I can add to, I've not bought myself anything in a long long time due to illness. We are going shopping to a shopping centre on Sunday and I'm reluctant to browse with him hovering now x

Errm my husband and I comment on each other's clothes all the time. We can be quite brutal with each other. We sometimes go shopping together too.

Same here 😂

I didn't realise it was such an issue to ask your partner for their opinion 🤷‍♀️

TheCreamTeaWasFromMe · 08/06/2023 08:54

I've often thought that people who judge others for the clothes they wear, simply because those clothes are from a certain shop, must be pretty small-minded individuals.

Understandable to say 'I don't shop in X because I don't particularly like their clothes', but how boring to go through life sneering at people because they do shop there?

Shop where you want, wear what you like. If it makes you feel good about yourself then does it matter if it's from a supermarket, Seasalt, or Versace?

thatcornishfeeling · 08/06/2023 08:57

I think their demographic is certainly an older woman. But they WISH they were targeting young female hipsters 😂

Anyway, regardless of that - Seasalt are absolutely horrid to work for and pay their HQ staff miserably. They have a bad reputation locally.

I'm surprised they're still in business. I wouldn't be surprised if they go in the same direction as Joules!

KvotheTheBloodless · 08/06/2023 08:58

I'm in my 30s, I love Seasalt! It's not for teens or most 20-somethings, but so what? I'd much rather be 30+ in comfortable, stylish clothes and a bedrock of confidence than be young again!

ShandaLear · 08/06/2023 08:58

I think Seasalt, Joules, Fat Face, Weird Fish, Crew and the like are never going to win any ‘sexy outfit’ awards, but they tend to be practical, well made, and sensible, and so they’re generally good staples can can be pulled out of the wardrobe time and time again and you’ll know they’ll still look appropriate. Reliable - that’s the word if use. I’d hardly wear them to a fancy dinner, but for school drop off, walking the dog, doing the weekly shop etc. they’re perfectly fine.

poorremus · 08/06/2023 09:00

I'm nearly 50 and wear Seasalt stuff that suits me. It's good quality, fits well and I like it. If I find something from Zara (for example) that fulfills the same criteria I do the same. I must admit though I'm not too bothered these days about whether I 'look' older or not. My age is my age. I'm bothered about whether I think it suits me and if I'm comfortable to wear it. But I am bothered about other things - like how big my tummy looks - which might not bother others. So if my husband mentioned anything about my tummy in something it would put me off wearing it (although I don't think he ever has).

Only you know what makes you feel comfortable and looks good on you OP - but if your husbands comment is enough to make you think twice about Seasalt clothes then find something elseSmile

TollgateDebs · 08/06/2023 09:00

I've always seen Seasalt as pushing a lifestyle rather than an age. I have their Larissa shirts, a couple of great dressing gowns, socks and they've earned their money back in cost per wear. I struggle with their dresses as they are too short in the waist for me on the whole but I always enjoy a browse when I'm in town (one of the few shops still on the local high street). One of my favourite (and very unusual in design) dresses is from Damart!! Bought number one in a charity shop (tripped over another on ebay and bought that too) and it is grey linen and geometrically constructed, most unlike anything I've ever seen in their marketing materials, with a asymetric hem, and always gets good comments when I wear it! I am a great believer in being a shopping tart, so never ignoring a brand because of the image, but browsing in the hope of finding a gem. Hopefully your Seasalt purchase will be a good 'un for you and yes, can occasionally be priced higher than some shops, but then they are still in existence and many fashion brands are not!

Honestly, it’s as much to do with your size and shape and what looks good on you rather than what particular brand is or isn’t “frumpy”. The model in the picture is 20 something, tall and thin. It’s not an especially flattering dress on her (although she’d look good in a bin bag). If, like me, you’re short, buxom and knocking 50, however, it’s a far more flattering choice than some edgy outfit from Selfridges which is six inches too long and cut for someone who’s shaped like a model. If you like the dress and feel comfortable in it, I really wouldn’t worry what the label says.

Yes I agree. There are certain brands that work on you. Seasalt stuff isn't cut right for me, somehow, but Fat Face, which used to do very similar stuff (less good quality now) was fine.

Catspyjamas17 · 08/06/2023 09:02

I've been buying the odd thing from there for the last few years and I'm a little bit younger than you, OP. The coats are superb quality and really do keep out the rain and wind and I've had the odd dress and skirt, and a corduroy pinafore which was quite fashionable.

I think what is more ageing is being uber glam with big hair, loads of makeup, tight clothes and massive heels.

MrsTwiggy · 08/06/2023 09:03

I'm 25, and there's a lot at seasalt that I think is lovely. I always look for seasalt stuff on Vinted as I know it lasts well!

Henddraig · 08/06/2023 09:03

I’ve been wearing sea salt since my 20s. Don’t think I’ll stop. Some of their stuff is chintzy, but some of it is great. And it’s natural fabrics, rather than polyesters which I think is the main reason I gravitate to it. I seem to attract a lot of static!

lastminutewednesday · 08/06/2023 08:31

The sandals have a bit of a cult following I think even amongst younger people, but the rest of it is aimed at people over 45 I would say-definitely not OAP territory though

Do you meant Saltwater sandals? Very different brand.

OP you are exactly the target demographic for Seasalt. It's not my taste, I do find the majority of it frumpy, but less frumpy than Joules. I used to wear Joules all the time about 20 years ago it was trendy for a while in the horse world and then they just frumped it.

ichifanny · 08/06/2023 09:04

Some of it is nice ish but he’s not wrong it’s hardly stylish and aimed at older more conservative people for casual wear . I guess it depends what kind of dresser or style you have had all your life . It would be surprising if you spent your life being pretty individual in your style choices and suddenly started wearing seasalt .

On a plus note, I'm well enough now to collect my teeth whitening trays from the dentist this morning. That's another little boost for my chops. He did also ask if I would have Turkey teeth later 🤣🤣🤣 he thinks he's hilarious. He can be rather, what's the word? Not realising the impact of his words? A big fanny lol xx

Twat is the word you are searching for I think Op.

LadyKenya · 08/06/2023 09:07

I really like Seasalt clothes. Yes they are very expensive, but you are paying for natural fibres, and quality. Things that are getting harder to find on the high street.

astarsheis · 08/06/2023 09:10

TBF I'm with the husband. 58 here and think it's all a bit naff along with that whole range of shops like White stuff, Fat face etc

LeafyGreenSummer · 08/06/2023 09:12

I buy my Seasalt stuff off Vinted or ebay - it's good quality, so second hand is still well worth it. I've never been a follower of fashion, though. I just like to be comfortable, and feel nice in what I'm wearing. I'm in my mid-50s, so target demographic, I guess!

CarolNoE · 08/06/2023 09:13

Drop him off at Cotton Traders for some slacks.
Seasalt fabrics are lovely especially bamboo cotton.

Riverlee · 08/06/2023 09:14

Mumsnet tend to frown on brands such as Seasalt, Fatface etc, preferring other shops.

However, one thing I learnt from a Style Analysis years ago is ditch the label and choose clothes that suit your shape and colours. Therefore, if you like the dress, and it suits you, does it really matter if it comes from Seasalt, Cos, Hush or Sainsbury’s.

I think the dress is lovely. Buy it, wear it and enjoy it!

happyinherts · 08/06/2023 09:15

Oh dear, there am I contemplating a few things from Bon Marche website! Seriously though, he'd be commenting if you wore crop tops and dressed like a 14 year old. If you like your Seasalt dress, wear it.

I think 'fashion' is easier for men. Shirt / T shirt + Shorts / Trousers = done.

Beenalongwinter · 08/06/2023 09:16

I made an attempt to home dye my eye brows, completely forgot about the dye and popped to Tesco's for milk with my DH . When I got home I looked in the mirror and noticed the dye . DH had not even noticed!

Newpeep · 08/06/2023 09:18

I've been wearing Seasalt for over 10 years. I am now 42 😂

It's amazing quality, fits well, wears and washes well and quite frankly I don't give a stuff about whether others think it's too old.

AndYou · 08/06/2023 09:18

The dresses look like the sort of stuff we made for O level needlework. But buy whatever you like op.

Sewannoying · 08/06/2023 09:20

I have the most gorgeous skirt from Seasalt that I bought in my early 30s. Now in my early 40s, I’ve just had a quick look on their website and have had to stop myself adding several things to the basket. Who cares what age it’s aimed at if you like it.

KatStratford · 08/06/2023 09:21

Rather than viewing the comment negatively, look on the positive side. Your husband still sees you as a hot young babe. Take it as the compliment it is!
