My DH suggesting I'm "getting old" because I've ordered from Seasalt

WoofWoofBeachLife · 08/06/2023 07:27

I saw a lovely wee dress last night on Seasalt, I have some money saved for a clothes makeover and decided to go for it. My DH said last night it was nice but isn't Seasalt for older women 😆 I'm 51 in July and I don't think it looks like an OAP website. Now I'm thinking, shit should I send it back?
I just want a few quality pieces I can add to, I've not bought myself anything in a long long time due to illness. We are going shopping to a shopping centre on Sunday and I'm reluctant to browse with him hovering now x

I wear Seasalt and I'm in my 30s, they are no different to Fat Face, Joules etc. Wear what you like.

Fat face and joules also for the frumpy / old.

CrunchyCarrot · 08/06/2023 09:43

Just tell your DH that you've seen some great clothes on Seasalt that would suit him, and see what he says! 😂

Seriously, if you like something there and when you try it on, it suits, then go for it! Thanks for mentioning it because I've just seen a dress I like. And I"m young! Er wait, no, I'm 67! But young at heart. 😎

mastertomsmum · 08/06/2023 09:43

If it’s something you like, take no notice of him. This year a lot of shops are full of animal prints and muted rather than vibrant colours, I can’t stand either of those things and I like a bit of colour. Oh and the other prolific trend seems to be cropped t shirts, I have to size up because of my height and arm length so I can’t possibly manage that successfully with a crop top.

Seasalt represents not just safe, but colourful and well made stuff, ie ideal for hols and summer days (should we have any of those in 2023).

in my wardrobe I have what’s now known as a coatigan, but was just called a long line cardigan way back. I’ve always loved finding the one item in a shop that doesn’t necessarily fit with the brand. This coatigan came from Country Casuals (definitely an over 50s brand) about 20 years ago. It never fails to be complimented, I didn’t have to size up to get long enough sleeves. A keeper from an unlikely source, always a good choice.

NB - bad luck getting a hubbie who thinks they know about fashion. I say this lightheartedly 😉

My god, the sneering. No wonder I visit S&B so rarely.

It's some people trying to wind others up.

Im amazed he’s heard of Seasalt!

Their stuff is mostly lovely, great quality. Unlike your DH’s ageism!!!

This!

See I would rather wear Seasalt than these. No offence. Because these look like the clothes my mum used to make for me when I was 5. Can anyone wear a piecrust frill these days? And pay £200 for it?

I have to admit I don't understand Style. I am not loyal to any one shop; I just by quite simple clothing with no frills and yokes.

BungleandGeorge · 08/06/2023 09:49

I think the quality and the costs are fab and like some of the styles. There’s nothing wrong with not wanting to dress like a teenager. I’ve got to an age where I want to buy a jacket that does the job and doesn’t leak, so yes perhaps getting old😆 I don’t think the dress you’ve chosen is particularly frumpy, nor is it cutting edge fashion.

Purplecatshopaholic · 08/06/2023 09:50

While I think Seasalt is a bit mumsy and twee and I’m older than you, my sister loves it and she’s younger. Each to their own….

Crikeyalmighty · 08/06/2023 09:50

I love that dress- am off to order it!!

AreMyDucksinarow · 08/06/2023 09:53

I have a couple of sea salt tops I’m 39!

I buy what suits me and these days and generally go for comfortable stuff 🤷‍♀️🤷‍♀️

I do not want to be dressing like a teenager as I have one myself 😂😂

Catspyjamas17 · 08/06/2023 09:54

It's a lovely useful dress, OP, the sort that can be worn for work or dressed up or down or thrown over swimwear on holiday and generally gets worn until it falls to pieces. I had similar from Gap in my 20s and 30s, absolutely brilliant.

Falafelfiend · 08/06/2023 09:55

That dress is quite inoffensive. I prefer solids myself, but yeah, no way would I see a woman in that and think "Oh, she must be an OAP".

kalokagathos · 08/06/2023 09:56

I just had a look and it does give off retirement vibes, a bit like Next or some M&S stuff.

Crikeyalmighty · 08/06/2023 09:56

That Batsheva stuff is bloody hideous-

I find a lot of stuff people suggest that is frilly and high necked and bright colors only looks great if you are 5ft 8 plus, thin and have no boobs. The rest of us look like we've borrowed out the dressing up box of a 5 year old- don't care if stuff is fashionable or not- it's simply not flattering for many women who don't fit the above description. And actually I think it's this stuff that is frumpy!! People just don't 'perceive ' it as frumpy if it's on the body of an attractive , thin, 5ft 10 model

cadentiasidera · 08/06/2023 10:00

PP who said Lucy and Yak is the young person's Seasalt... I wear both, am 40 and am finally enjoying choosing clothes cos I like them rather than bothering about what people think. I've discovered the joy of colourful dressing rather than wearing muted colours or black and hoping to fade into the background. I've put on loads of weight since having my daughter 5 years ago and being on ADs long term, so my body shape and what suits me is drastically different from in my 20s, but I'm much less self-conscious about my clothes and couldn't care less if it's a 'frumpy' brand, I want to be comfortable and feel good. And actually I often get compliments! Wear whatever you like and ignore silly comments!

Honoured to have your presence, @funnelfan! I don’t know how we manage to limp along without you. And yet, somehow, we do …

Confused

I have some stuff and styled up it's lovely. Very classic. I'm 30 and in the fashion/ beauty world.

TollgateDebs · 08/06/2023 09:00

I've always seen Seasalt as pushing a lifestyle rather than an age. I have their Larissa shirts, a couple of great dressing gowns, socks and they've earned their money back in cost per wear. I struggle with their dresses as they are too short in the waist for me on the whole but I always enjoy a browse when I'm in town (one of the few shops still on the local high street). One of my favourite (and very unusual in design) dresses is from Damart!! Bought number one in a charity shop (tripped over another on ebay and bought that too) and it is grey linen and geometrically constructed, most unlike anything I've ever seen in their marketing materials, with a asymetric hem, and always gets good comments when I wear it! I am a great believer in being a shopping tart, so never ignoring a brand because of the image, but browsing in the hope of finding a gem. Hopefully your Seasalt purchase will be a good 'un for you and yes, can occasionally be priced higher than some shops, but then they are still in existence and many fashion brands are not!

This. I don’t understand why so many on here try to “age group” shops. I don’t see how a plain cotton dress has an age limit, either way.

Seasalt has a style and an aesthetic that doesn’t appeal to me at 50, wouldn’t have appealed to me at 30 and won’t at 70. My mum on the other hand has worn the style of dress the OP posted for as long as I can remember, and still does at 80+.

Fat face and joules also for the frumpy / old.

Another sneery post. Where do you shop that is so achingly trendy?

Crikeyalmighty · 08/06/2023 10:06

My view- stick a denim/leather jacket over it- pair of silver trainers and 'frumpiness' sorted. Maybe their target market is over 40- that's where the money is but OP is 51- so hardly an issue

PizzaPizza56 · 08/06/2023 10:08

I'm in my 30s and like Seasalt. Like PP said, no different really to Fat Face. I also like Crew Clothing.

JenWillsiam · 08/06/2023 10:10

It’s not sneery - if people like the look that’s fine. But don’t pretend it’s young and trendy when it’s not.

I don’t shop anywhere achingly trendy but jersey fabric with the look of fat face is not for me. I stick with me+em, jigsaw, mint velvet, cos, hush, and independents. Because that’s my style. Which I’m fine with.

MysteryBelle · 08/06/2023 10:10

I think it’s for old people too. Actually I take that back, it’s simply frumpy. Any age can wear flattering clothing or wear frumpy clothing with hideous patterns and cuts. Most of their clothing is very frumpy. It’s a non for me.

Of course you should wear what you want and your husband was rude. But not wrong 😂

I am 5"7, thin and have no boobs. But that would not look good on me. If I was going to spend that kind of money, I think I might buy Poetry.
