My DH suggesting I'm "getting old" because I've ordered from Seasalt

I saw a lovely wee dress last night on Seasalt, I have some money saved for a clothes makeover and decided to go for it. My DH said last night it was nice but isn't Seasalt for older women 😆 I'm 51 in July and I don't think it looks like an OAP website. Now I'm thinking, shit should I send it back?
I just want a few quality pieces I can add to, I've not bought myself anything in a long long time due to illness. We are going shopping to a shopping centre on Sunday and I'm reluctant to browse with him hovering now x

I bought my husband a Seasalt anorak and it looks great. He's 52 but annoyingly looks about mid 40s, and it doesn't look ageing on him.

I'm personally not a fan of the women's stuff because I find it a bit twee for my style, but it is really well made.

Softoprider · 08/06/2023 07:46

I discovered their section in M&S and can't keep away now. The quality of the dresses is second to none, the fabric is lovely and those dresses with the pocket detail are so nice to wear.
I now have three summer dresses and two tops. I get compliments from my family - oh mum you look nice and I do !

megletthesecond · 08/06/2023 07:47

I'm 49 and wouldn't wear Seasalt. I've been in a few times but it would really age me.

WoofWoofBeachLife · 08/06/2023 07:49

Thanks for the replies, he actually compared it to Cotton traders the cheeky mutt! He had a flick through the website when I was browsing too. He buys mainly designer, buys a few bits a year. He's a clothes snob. I agree some of their items do look frumpy but I liked a few bits and they fit in with my style, relaxed and chilled.
He didn't means it in a horrible way but I am mega sensitive about myself at the moment after being ill for a year. I still look like a washed out chamois at times. I wanted a simple dress to wear with my converse this weekend. I'll get a pic x

Sorry to break this to you but you probably look 49 whatever clothing you have on. And that's OK.

CinnamonJellyBeans · 08/06/2023 07:49

Women choosing clothes (especially underwear) accompanied by men gives me the absolute rage.

DH does not comment on my body or clothes, except if we're going out out, when he gives the obligatory: You look nice.

Tell your husband to butt out.

Worldgonecrazy · 08/06/2023 07:42

I think it’s great your husband cares what you wear, it shows he is still interested in you.

I also agree that Seasalt is 95% frumpy. But if you like the dress why not try it on as it may look great, or it might not. You won’t know unless you try.

Bingo!

I like Seasalt's quality and often find there is nothing I like but every now and again I strike gold.

My issue is mainly the muted colours which don't suit me. As a jewel winter I suit bright sharp colours and often see a style I like but in the wrong colour.

NoIncomeTaxNoVAT · 08/06/2023 07:51

Well im 37 and i have quite a few seasalt bits 😬 I agree with pp that some of the prints can be a bit aging, but i stick to plain or less busy fabrics. I love the amount of cotton and i have some great work summer dresses from there. I found them originally through their maternity range, when i got some great maternity tops but they seem to have discontinued that range now.

Doingmybest12 · 08/06/2023 07:52

What is he wearing? I hate these kind of casual put downs that just make you feel a bit rubbish when you just want to go about your daily life. Men generally need to choose trousers/shorts and tshirt/shirt all in basic style and colour. Don't give it head space just choose what you like. I went into Zara the other day, womens clothing overwhelming almost , mens clothing - choose this or that really. Feel more strongly about this than I thought!

WoofWoofBeachLife · 08/06/2023 07:53

I liked it because of the colour and also the fabric against my skin at the moment. Anything restrictive I can't have, I need loose. Xx

They also do some of the coats, dresses and trousers in tall which is one of the reasons I shop there, they are also good if you need larger sizes and have a good size range

BeyondMyWits · 08/06/2023 07:55

I like seasalt, but can't often tell the difference between seasalt and weird fish which is a bit cheaper. I'm old though... (well 59, which on here either means past it, or too young to even think of sitting down for 10 min)

WoofWoofBeachLife · 08/06/2023 07:58

On a plus note, I'm well enough now to collect my teeth whitening trays from the dentist this morning. That's another little boost for my chops. He did also ask if I would have Turkey teeth later 🤣🤣🤣 he thinks he's hilarious. He can be rather, what's the word? Not realising the impact of his words? A big fanny lol xx

I like that dress!

I thought shopping was just like that, some stuff ok, some stuff not. For example I have had quite a few gorgeous things from Brakeburn, but sometimes I go on and everything is a bit meh. The only place I consistently think 😍 is Oliver Bonas so I have to avoid it or I'd be bankrupt.

As a pp said Weird Fish is a good alternative, good quality. Check out Brakeburn too.

I'm in my 30s btw and look pretty great 😁

thedevilinablackdress · 08/06/2023 08:01

I can see why he might say that, the overall vibe is nice, practical, safe, pretty. I wouldn't dress head to toe in it 24/7, but as part of a wardrobe with an eclectic mix of things, I enjoy the stuff I've had from there.
If you like the dress on, wear and enjoy.

Aixellency · 08/06/2023 08:01

Can’t comment on Seasalt as I’ve never shopped there - but good grief, why on earth would you go shopping for clothes with your husband? Unless you need his permission or credit card it seems a completely foolhardy venture, certain to end in tears and a chilly domestic atmosphere over the coming heatwave. If you must have company when shopping take your most stylish friend.

I’m considerably older than you and shop almost exclusively online. What sort of things are you wanting to buy for your wardrobe makeover? Size? Budget? Etc.?

WimpoleHat · 08/06/2023 08:01

Honestly, it’s as much to do with your size and shape and what looks good on you rather than what particular brand is or isn’t “frumpy”. The model in the picture is 20 something, tall and thin. It’s not an especially flattering dress on her (although she’d look good in a bin bag). If, like me, you’re short, buxom and knocking 50, however, it’s a far more flattering choice than some edgy outfit from Selfridges which is six inches too long and cut for someone who’s shaped like a model. If you like the dress and feel comfortable in it, I really wouldn’t worry what the label says.

Theduchy · 08/06/2023 08:02

I wear Seasalt and I'm 34. I'm not sure what the problem is with it? Great quality Breton tops, cotton dresses etc

LittleMonks11 · 08/06/2023 08:02

Dress is lovely. I think it's not the dress but the comments. If he thinks he's just being funny, tell him he's making you feel down about yourself. He's not Tom Ford.

DobbyTheHouseElk · 08/06/2023 08:05

He sounds delightful….

Hazelnuttella · 08/06/2023 08:06

I think you are probably in the seasalt target demographic.

Unusual that your DH has an opinion on seasalt though… is he a secret mumsnetter??

I have a coat from seasalt which I love, I’m 32, but the rest of the clothing isn’t really my style.

FreddiesTeeth · 08/06/2023 08:15

Gosh he makes such supportive comments, doesn't he! What a peach!

Whatt · 08/06/2023 08:17

How would he even know what Seasalt is?

Mutabiliss · 08/06/2023 08:19

Well if he's buying designer clothes thinking that makes him better than you he's a mug, they're ridiculously overpriced and often made in sweatshops like everything else. He honestly doesn't sound like a very nice person 😬

@RampantIvy I have the same problem with the washed out colours, as a winter. I wish they'd just turn the brightness up a bit on everything! I can get away with some of the greens and blues but nothing yellowy or red. Same in Fatface.

radiantorange · 08/06/2023 08:20

I’ve shopped at sea salt since I was early 30s so 10 years now. I have some really great skirts, jackets and dresses that have lasted well too!
