My DH suggesting I'm "getting old" because I've ordered from Seasalt

WoofWoofBeachLife · 08/06/2023 07:27

I saw a lovely wee dress last night on Seasalt, I have some money saved for a clothes makeover and decided to go for it. My DH said last night it was nice but isn't Seasalt for older women 😆 I'm 51 in July and I don't think it looks like an OAP website. Now I'm thinking, shit should I send it back?
I just want a few quality pieces I can add to, I've not bought myself anything in a long long time due to illness. We are going shopping to a shopping centre on Sunday and I'm reluctant to browse with him hovering now x

@Floisme I'm bristley too today, 🤣
I'm too hot and sweaty to try on my purchases from yesterday especially the bras.

It mattered at the time when i was feeling shit about myself that he didn't see me as "old" as that's how I interpreted his comment, I was wrong but it still made me feel rubbish and he realised that. Whats happened on the thread is completely different now with women being disgusting to other women with lower self esteem and who don't have the confidence like you to say 100% that you really truly don't care. So now after reading every comment I don't want to care what anyone thinks. I need to learn to embrace me as I am, dress for my body and restrictions and stuff everyone else. So the thread has really opened my eyes. X

You’ll be much happier if you do that.

LadyMuckingabout · 12/06/2023 13:58

I don’t see what’s wrong with having an opinion before the person wears it. I appreciate dh or dd telling me to step back from the ceramicist look because however tempted I am by linen smocks etc, they just don’t suit me and I end up wailing when seeing myself in a photo, “Why didn’t you tell me I look like a tube?!”

And, as oft discussed, it’s not really about looking old, but frumpy and, in my case, dumpy and certain brands don’t do certain shapes any favours.

Crikeyalmighty · 12/06/2023 15:53

@DarrellRiversCriminalBehaviourOrder great post. And as an added point the great thing being 61 is I don't care if it's 'in fashion' - if it fits, looks nice to me, is affordable and suits my life-- I'm happy!! And people often ask me too where I get things from in a positive way - so I can't look that shit -

@Floisme can you explain what you mean by wanting to wear a top with movement to it? I don’t know much about fashion and I’m interested to find out.

I'll try and answer without starting a fight. Let's take a basic T shirt. Like many or most posters, I look for cotton. I have a number that fit ok, skim and don't cling etc, but otherwise they just kind of sit on top of my skin, never moving, following the outline of my body. That was all well and good back in the days when my belly was flatter and my boobs stood up all on their own, but now that kind of T shirt feel makes me feel heavy and lumpy.

I have others that are much more fluid, that move and drape of their own accord as if they have a life of their own. Not only does that feel better but it distracts they eye away from my crumbly body.

I think it's partly about the kind of cotton used e.g. I've got a couple of Gap Ts in pima cotton that are great, but I've had them over 10 years (I used to have 4) and their days are numbered. But also, since I went back to sewing, I've remembered how important the laying and cutting out stage is, and I suspect that's where a lot of manufacturers are cutting corners. (Pun unintentional.)

Crikeyalmighty · 12/06/2023 16:09

@Floisme whilst it's not popular on here with the fashionistas it's one reason I like jersey - it kind of fits and moves round my rather ample bits rather than just lying there

CatfoodOzymandias · 12/06/2023 16:09

I understand what you are saying @Floisme and I too need to dress carefully, now that I am no longer the size 6 I used to be. But do you think paying more makes for more flattering clothes? I usually don't.

My current most flattering tees are 3 for £20 by Rapanui.

LadyMuckingabout · 12/06/2023 16:11

I also fail to see what’s wrong with “pleasing” your dh - by that I don’t mean wearing fishnet stockings and a boob tube, but if they dislike Seasalt stuff then it must be for a reason.

I hate short-sleeve shirts on men - unless you are Gene Kelly they look, well, frumpy - why is that word misogynistic? Is “square” unisex?! Dh respects my opinion and doesn’t wear them.

Of course I slob around at home, but if I am going out (as in out ) I would rather someone told me that my outfit wasn’t great rather than thinking that you must never dare comment.

I guess I should know by now than to post before I've had coffee and chocolate! Anyhows I'm glad to hear you're feeling better.

I don't entirely agree with your analysis that I don't care what other people think. I do actually listen to other opinions - I even listen to my husband's on occasion Wink. I'm aware that other people may see things I've missed. I've even changed my mind about certain brands after listening to other views - Cos being an example.

There's a post somewhere upthread - sorry I can't find it now otherwise I'd quote it - about how we sometimes become so invested in our clothing choices that there's a danger of taking any negativity as a personal attack. I think it's a good point and one I try and remember. I guess I just don't see the use in talking about clothes if we can't talk about why we dislike things as well as why we like them.

I realise there are some professional goaders, and probably more than there used to be, but I still believe that most opinions, both favourable and unfavourable, are posted in good faith.

I think there was a time, during the halcyon days of the high street, when it mattered far less - as I said upthread, two of my favourite, longest running T shirts are from Gap. I think those days are largely over although I do still find the odd gem in H&M if I rummage enough. It doesn't mean I think paying more always means better.

CatfoodOzymandias · 12/06/2023 16:33

Yes, one really needs to look around these days. I often prefer charity shops. Especially for wool coats.

Floisme · 12/06/2023 16:35

Same! Although they're very hit and miss round here.

CatfoodOzymandias · 12/06/2023 16:38

I don''t live in Kensington ( I live in a much less nice part of London) but I went all the way there to look at some charity shops when I wanted a nice wool coat for less. Found a beautiful Jigsaw pure wool coat for less than £25.

Floisme · 12/06/2023 16:41

I used to head for the Marylebone High St charity shops whenever I was in London. Well I still do but Lordy, the prices now Shock

I think their demographic is certainly an older woman. But they WISH they were targeting young female hipsters 😂

Anyway, regardless of that - Seasalt are absolutely horrid to work for and pay their HQ staff miserably. They have a bad reputation locally.

I'm surprised they're still in business. I wouldn't be surprised if they go in the same direction as Joules!

@thatcornishfeeling Do you work for Seasalt? How do you know they are horrid to work for?

WoofWoofBeachLife · 12/06/2023 20:23

After 565 comments, I don't like the dress 😐 if I'd seen it in store I wouldn't have looked twice at it. I had also ordered a pair of trousers which are horrid. A blouse/shirt though is nice, I'll try it on in the morning. X

Floisme · 12/06/2023 21:32

Sorry to hear that op. If you post what kinds of things you're looking for with a few pointers like colours and budget there are posters who really know their stuff who might be able to help.

Thank you, I will do that. I need assistance with some staple basics for everyday wear. When I need something for going out I'll buy it when I need it. I'm having a brutal clear out this week xx

Nah, mate … Grin Bad idea. That’s exactly why there are so many panicked threads on S&B. Hopeless to start looking when you need something. The sensible thing is to buy (or at least identify) something perfect when you see it, in anticipation of occasions to wear it. That way you can also gradually build up or at least work out ‘things to go with it’: maybe a pair of sandals you’ve had in a box for ten years and realise would be perfect, or a light coat your sibling has never found a use for; or an extravagant belt you’ve been havering over for several seasons. You need an holistic approach.

User18540964 · 13/06/2023 07:39

Most of my Seasalt clothes are bought in the sale, Next Clearance and the Seasalt eBay outlet which does do free returns like the online shop. Because the styles rarely change and are similar year on year, I get very good quality clothes at a good price for everyday wear. Likewise Fatface.

WoofWoofBeachLife · 13/06/2023 09:41

@Aixellency 🤣 I read this out to DH and he said yep cue you crabbit running about saying you've got chuff all to wear, nothing fits, looks nice and add in "I don't have time for this shopping shit" 🤣🤣
Advice taken on board. There's nothing planned so I can rest easy for a few months xx

Ah that's a shame! I'm a 30-something Seasalt shopper and have enjoyed reading this thread Grin would love to know what blouse you ordered? Hope you like it when you try it on!

@stickybear this one, my boobs are too big, making the blouse have a gape between buttons I'd probably need to put a pin in it. It felt nice on, light, but I've sent it back xx

OP, I was about to batter you to death for taking @Floisme on

But, but, but, you worked it out.

Soo, let's talk about what you do want.

Who the chuff actually are you?

What you want?
