My DH suggesting I'm "getting old" because I've ordered from Seasalt

WoofWoofBeachLife · 08/06/2023 07:27

I saw a lovely wee dress last night on Seasalt, I have some money saved for a clothes makeover and decided to go for it. My DH said last night it was nice but isn't Seasalt for older women 😆 I'm 51 in July and I don't think it looks like an OAP website. Now I'm thinking, shit should I send it back?
I just want a few quality pieces I can add to, I've not bought myself anything in a long long time due to illness. We are going shopping to a shopping centre on Sunday and I'm reluctant to browse with him hovering now x

@Hal9001 I regularly ask my dh and dd ‘Do I look mutton in this?’ It’s not hate speech.

It’s hate speech against yourself, @MrsRachelDanvers!

You may not have recognised your own internalised misogyny. As you know, the phrase relates to the woman, not the item of clothing. You’re referring to yourself as a piece of meat disguised to make it saleable. And you’re acknowledging a hugely outdated societal view that women are only good for being gazed upon by men with a view to procreation - and those beyond childbearing age should make themselves invisible and not try to fool men into thinking they’re fuckable. They should certainly never attempt to wear anything that will draw attention to their hideous, pointless selves.

It’s a bit awful to think you’re passing all this on to your daughter, too …

@NatashaDancing - your post wasn’t there when I started key tapping! Grin

I disagree with you. And men and women have always enjoyed looking at each other-it’s a shame some men are boorish about it. And I’m guilty of telling my husband what he’s wearing is old man vibe. And telling him off if he goes ‘oof’ when he gets up from the sofa. Am I guilty of misandry😁?

There's a difference between enjoying looking at people you fancy and the misogynistic phrase we're discussing. It's odd that you think "some men" are boorish. Calling someone an "aged frump" and "mutton dressed as lamb" are boorish too.

It's interesting that the criticism you make of your husband's clothes is that he's dressing too old for his age- he's "lamb dressed as mutton" if you like.

Your second example is a bit odd tbh. There's nothing wrong with aging and finding one has less mobility.

For those of us who like nice affordable clobber that you look good in- but not necessarily high fashion- I had my SilkFed delivery today (ordered yesterday - uk based) - both fit great (true size 18) nice material (kind of chiffon like) and no hanging threads etc- seem decently made. Well worth a look on their website - huge range. Please note I have no affiliation with them, just pleased to get an on line order that was as nice as it looked. Here's what I ordered

DarrellRiversCriminalBehaviourOrder · 09/06/2023 12:50

SilkFred is a marketplace, not a manufacturer. There are all sorts of brands on there.

DedicatedFolllowerofFashion · 09/06/2023 12:58

Gee whizz the nitpicking by people on here and the telling you how you should view it, how they feel sorry for you and fucking blah blah.

Crikeyalmighty · 09/06/2023 13:00

@DarrellRiversCriminalBehaviourOrder Yep- realise that. Pleased with these two in terms of quality

WoofWoofBeachLife · 09/06/2023 13:17

@Crikeyalmighty the dresses are beautiful. I think I'll order the black one. Are you normally an 18 or did you size up? Xx

Crikeyalmighty · 09/06/2023 13:44

@WoofWoofBeachLife I'm normally an 18 but can get into the odd 16 too on 'some' brands- with me it's more about the boobs- which don't seem to go down however much I diet!! Still looks good with the zip down- lol

I've tried it just in sandals and over leggings and it looks really nice both ways- think I will get tons of wear from it too . It looks quite classy

I'm 5ft 4 and it's around knee length.

WoofWoofBeachLife · 09/06/2023 13:53

Thank you @Crikeyalmighty I'm 5ft 5 so it should be okay. I'm the same with the boobs 🤣

Jim Morrison looked great in leather trousers. I think everyone else should probably leave him to it.
Kind of hard seeing as how he's dead and all

Update - I went shopping today and realised I have somehow muddled White Stuff and Seasalt….

It’s White Stuff I’m considering buying from, what sort of age are they geared at?

Did go into Seasalt and while it does appear to be a 50+ sort of place (from looking at the stock, and noting the age of other customers/staff… and the confused frowns I was getting!), there are still some good staples there and there was a dress with sea shells on that looked quite young and fun!

Robinni · 09/06/2023 22:21

Also what is the view on Monsoon and can people recommend some chic but practical shops for summer wear, if seasalt et al. are passé?

User18540964 · 09/06/2023 22:26

I would say that WhiteStuff was similar to Seasalt. Quality has gone downhill though and price gone up - a lot

Meadowfly · 10/06/2023 07:47

Just looked at the linen stuff on their website- it looks nice but very boring colours, dreary autumn shades rather than light, bright spring / summer colours. The models make it clear that their target market is 50+ - and it is a good thing that shops exist focusing on something other than young and fast-fashion trends!

RampantIvy · 10/06/2023 08:03

That's my main issue with Seasalt/White Stuff/Fatface @Meadowfly. All those sludgy colours just don't look good on me.

Mirabai · 10/06/2023 09:09

Monsoon stuff can look great in the pics, but they don’t do a petite range and their size 8 is roughly an old size 12 so if you’re small they won’t fit.

Eh? I don't own any Seasalt but dreary autumn shades rather than light, bright spring / summer colours? - that's just not correct.

Seasalt dresses

RampantIvy · 10/06/2023 10:00

Clearly a lot of the summer clothes aren't sludgy, but a lot of them wouldn't suit a jewel winter. I do like some of those dresses though.

Robinni · 10/06/2023 10:10

Just seen that they do a linen short suit which is quite trendy, alongside all the sensible dresses..

@Mirabai I would agree with you about Monsoon, I am tall so it suits me. What I like at the moment is their dual sizing ie S 8-10, M 12-14, L 16-18, XL 20-22. Means it isn’t catastrophic if you go up or down a size… I buy generally in autumn and summer as tends to be nicest then. A bit sparkly at xmas and bland in spring.

I don't know what a jewel winter is. I like some colours, I don't like other colours.

NatashaDancing · 10/06/2023 10:30

Sorry, that came across as snippy- I'm not hugely convinced by getting your colours done. I suppose because it's items of clothing I notice on other people and if I like the dress/ coat/ whatever, rather than the person wearing it.
