My DH suggesting I'm "getting old" because I've ordered from Seasalt

WoofWoofBeachLife · 08/06/2023 07:27

I saw a lovely wee dress last night on Seasalt, I have some money saved for a clothes makeover and decided to go for it. My DH said last night it was nice but isn't Seasalt for older women 😆 I'm 51 in July and I don't think it looks like an OAP website. Now I'm thinking, shit should I send it back?
I just want a few quality pieces I can add to, I've not bought myself anything in a long long time due to illness. We are going shopping to a shopping centre on Sunday and I'm reluctant to browse with him hovering now x

I think it’s great your husband cares what you wear, it shows he is still interested in you.

I also agree that Seasalt is 95% frumpy. But if you like the dress why not try it on as it may look great, or it might not. You won’t know unless you try.

Yes it's really great that he is such an ageist idiot. 🙄And that the OP is so affected by his twattish opinion that she is going to send the dress back!

Also 'frumpy' is such a misogynist word. Grow up FGS.

@robinni
I'm cabin crew
Hubby works from home

I just couldn't bear wearing any of these clothes as to me they are so boring and plain and for people with no style! Or for people who couldn't care less what they look like!

I wear Zara, H&M, Karen Millen, and yes the occasional M&S as recently they've got more with it and less staid

Also I buy abroad - especially in Europe where there are so many beautiful shops with stylish clothes!

Sorry but Seasalt etc are just horrendous

😂😂

RampantIvy · 10/06/2023 10:43

No worries @NatashaDancing. Jewel winter colours really suit me, and muted colours just make me look older and washed out. I can see that as well as a HOC consultant. Sometimes the difference in a shade of red, for example, is very subtle. But it really does make a difference to how well I look.

Flippersmum · 08/06/2023 17:21

Yes.
I'm 52 and today received my first Seasalt dress in the post from ebay. Can't afford their prices new. I am autistic and can't bear the feel of artificial fabrics. My usual size fits me and I was feeling good about treating myself. Now I read here that the clothes I like are massive, dowdy and frumpy. Why can't people just say they're not to their taste?

Enjoy it! I love natural fabrics too and only wear linen, cotton and wool if i can help it. Ignore the absolute raging idiots on this thread.

Projection???

Do not go gently ……

🤣🤣🤣

😂😂

I think the use of "hubby" instantly cancels out all style points amoretti might have.

If you think that just because I am annoyed by misogyny and ageism that I am projecting then whatever, probably says more about you than me.

I get your point and agree. It's absolutely nothing about being afraid of getting old.

I'd just like to say how completely blimmin' bored I am with people on here trying to shoot stuff down by claiming it's "projection". It's plain as day that most of them have no understanding of what it actually is, and think it's just a catch-all rebuttal to absolutely anything they disagree with or don't like. It's really, really annoying.

As you were.

Ohdave · 10/06/2023 13:30

What’s wrong with it? I’ve got some gorgeous tops and shirts from them. I’m 34. Loving the sneering on here. Pathetic.

Meadowfly · 10/06/2023 14:58

Natasha - yes dull colours in that link, apart from the first turquoise dress and a couple of pale blue ones the colours are muted, not clear and bright (I guess this is what people mean by jewel colours) . who wants to wear murky red in the summer?. Even the patterned dress are not what I would call bright and cheerful/ they’d look great on some people but I’d look washed out and I think they’re boring, which is a shame because they look decent quality.

Crikeyalmighty · 10/06/2023 15:09

You see whilst I don't like 'some' of the dresses (I tend to like long or above knee more) there are a few that I think are nice. Personally I quite like muted colours but guess we are all different -

I think this below is pretty and not what I would personally call frumpy either. We aren't all at the life stage we look fab in strappy vest tops and shorts! Believe me i would love to look fab in a crop top and slouchy trousers at 61- but I don't!! We still need clothes!! And I think frumpy is a poor choice of words as many current fashions to me (all these little house on the prairie ruffles and high necks) look exceptionally frumpy and rarely that flattering - even on those 6ft beanpoles.

Thank you. I've lost a lot of confidence reading this thread but then the other things people suggest aren't things I like. So I'm wearing my dress anyhow.

DarrellRiversCriminalBehaviourOrder · 10/06/2023 17:15

If there was a single aesthetic that was unquestionably and objectively attractive and stylish, we'd all be wearing it and it would never change.

Style is very personal and naturally we all think we're the arbiters of good taste.

I'd bet my house that most people on this thread are dressed like absolute bums while posting. I know I am.

RampantIvy · 10/06/2023 17:55

Well said @DarrellRiversCriminalBehaviourOrder

woodhill · 10/06/2023 18:17

I love Seasalt and my dds in their 20s like some of the plain stuff

It's lovely and the stuff is good quality

Crikeyalmighty · 10/06/2023 18:26

@DarrellRiversCriminalBehaviourOrder totally agree . I'm in a FatFace wrap top dress- navy with daisies on it- 11 years old , washes a dream- doesn't need ironing ever - clearly not cool!!!

I follow Emma Paton on IG who was doing a Seasalt holiday wardrobe - I think she looks fab and not one bit frumpy.

That’s exactly what I don’t want to look like. 😆

Craftycorvid · 10/06/2023 20:24

I like some Seasalt things, some Lucy and Yak things, some Toast…. I agree that Seasalt worn head to toe is a certain ‘look’ beloved of arty middle class ladies of a certain age. I quite like the dresses and coats. If you like something, wear it!

honeyandfizz · 10/06/2023 20:27

@Mirabai Ah well we can't all want to look the same.

I don't think she looks fab. She doesn't look terrible but it's just so plain, dull and safe.

What's your preferred aesthetic? I'm not being needly, I'm honestly interested to see.
