My DH suggesting I'm "getting old" because I've ordered from Seasalt

WoofWoofBeachLife · 08/06/2023 07:27

I saw a lovely wee dress last night on Seasalt, I have some money saved for a clothes makeover and decided to go for it. My DH said last night it was nice but isn't Seasalt for older women 😆 I'm 51 in July and I don't think it looks like an OAP website. Now I'm thinking, shit should I send it back?
I just want a few quality pieces I can add to, I've not bought myself anything in a long long time due to illness. We are going shopping to a shopping centre on Sunday and I'm reluctant to browse with him hovering now x

At all, I have already apologised.

Where I am it’s quite commonly used and I hadn’t particularly given it a second thought.

Could we get back to Seasalt pls.

Where be you from @Robinni?

Robinni · 08/06/2023 22:39

@Hal9001 I can appreciate your curiosity and wanting to get into some type of a debate. But this derails the thread.

Hal9001 · 08/06/2023 22:44

It's a 20 page thread @Robinni.

Let's chat.

I think it's been allover.

RosesAndHellebores · 08/06/2023 22:46

All I was saying was that my mother isn't an aged frump. She's tiny, was v beautiful and for those asking what she did, she trained as a ballerina, danced professionally, ran her own dancing school, did her husband's admin in her later years, etc. In sensible shoes still walks into the village every day - 2.5 miles there and back. She has always been chic, even in trousers and blouse she is chic. 5'4" and never been more than 8st 6lb. She could wear a sack and look elegant. I cannot, which is probably why I like Seasalt.

RampantIvy · 08/06/2023 22:47

5 pages if you have 100 posts per page.

Crikeyalmighty · 08/06/2023 23:42

@RosesAndHellebores she sounds like one of those tiny, immaculate elderly French women you see!! I would feel like a sack of spuds at the side of her! Lol

I’ve never seen anyone, of any age, wear a pair of leather trousers that I’ve thought looks good on them.

Why dismiss someone’s choices as “frumpy”? May not be to your taste, but a “frock” sounds dreadfully old-fashioned to me.

Jim Morrison looked great in leather trousers. I think everyone else should probably leave him to it.

ex primary school teacher style to me

Can someone shed any light on what "ex primary school teacher style" is?

MrsPelligrinoPetrichor · 09/06/2023 00:11

Kennykenkencat · 08/06/2023 15:36

Is it really aimed at women because no where does the website say the word women. Plenty of adverts for mens wear but womenswear comes under the title Clothing

Strange

That's because no one seems to agree on what a woman is so they can't design clothes for them 😉

Kennykenkencat · 09/06/2023 01:47

MrsPelligrinoPetrichor

I thought they might know that they design comfy frocks for middle class women of a certain age and thought they would try to be on trend and woke and missed the mark completely.

I went into their website and thought it was for mens clothing. As it’s headings were Sales-Clothing and then Menswear

Couldnt say I would wear any of it as I don’t really do dresses and certainly not in muted colours.

A young Jim Morrison was about the only person to look ok in leather trousers-
Otherwise, they aren’t that flattering on anyone.

As for saying that the 83 yr old person “ Looks like a primary school teacher” - That’s a bizarre thing to say.
What does a primary school teacher look like compared to a senior school teacher- or indeed a Professor?!

What does a GP look like? Or a Dentist?!

I commend someone of that age walking miles and being very flexible and active is a very good thing.
Body shape can make people look older or younger- As opposed to what someone wears per se.

I'm late 50s and wouldn't be seen dead in Seasalt, Joules, FatFace or White Stuff

They are all the same - earth mummy middle class England style for stay at home mums who have no style

Practical and boring - not classy and elegant

Sorry but you asked and I've just asked my husband and he turned up his nose too!
His word....frumpy

Maybe you could let us know what you wear so we can all judge your choices. I hate classy and elegant clothes, but I am not an earth mummy middle class England style person (I don't even live in the UK), and I'm not a stay at home mum - I'm not even a mum. However, I do own four Seasalt linen dresses and one linen top and I couldn't care less if you think I am practical and boring - at least I'm cool and comfortable in the hot summer weather.

Aslanplustwo · 09/06/2023 05:38

RosesAndHellebores · 08/06/2023 12:40

But that picture looks like frumpy old lady/ex primary school teacher style to me. My 86 year old mum wouldn't be seen dead in that. She wouldn't wear Seasalt either.

She still wears leather trousers, silk blouses and good shoes or a well cut pair of jeans with a blazer and good trainers. Dresses will be well made classic frock.

She has always been far better dressed and more stylish than me.

Your Mum sounds like a great lady who knows her sense of style. However, we are all different and I wouldn't be seen dead in what your Mum wears at any age.

I don't refer to anyone as "frumpy" because I am mature enough to understand that there are no rules and people should be able to wear whatever they want to without feeling the disapproving gaze of others who feel superior.

Mumtobabyhavoc · 09/06/2023 05:49

I think the dress is very nice! It's definitely an easy summer dress that could be worn at many different ages amd accessorized differently.

explainthistomeplease · 09/06/2023 07:06

I love the word 'frock' and use it all the time to describe my own clothing and that of my friends. Perhaps i use it slightly ironically because I more often wear trousers. But it's definitely not a derogatory word in my lexicon!

HauntedPencil · 09/06/2023 07:15

I've had basics from sea salt years ago - and all the school mums seemed to have a phase of one of their coats - but some of it does seem a bit frumpy, but I wouldn't dismiss something just from where it's from - give it a try!

MrsRachelDanvers · 09/06/2023 07:35

@Hal9001 I regularly ask my dh and dd ‘Do I look mutton in this?’ It’s not hate speech.

Speak for yourself. I look amazing in leather trousers.

Falafelfiend · 09/06/2023 07:50

Thanks @NatashaDancing I really like the Community Clothing clothes you linked; very much my style. Lovely, simple clothes.

I quite like the Palava also, but on other people perhaps, as I am not much of a print person.

I also have several things from Thought, which does quite good plain cotton with no frills and embellishments and puff sleeves.

I must admit I have been idly thinking of faux leather trousers after seeing women my age and size wearing them, but DH feels about them the way OP's DH feels about Seasalt:) Not that that will stop me wearing them if I want. But the image in my head is Ross in Friends trying to squeeze into the leather trousers with talcum powder!

mdh2020 · 09/06/2023 08:03

My DC won’t hear of me even thinking I am getting old and I am a lot older than you!

WoofWoofBeachLife · 08/06/2023 07:53

I liked it because of the colour and also the fabric against my skin at the moment. Anything restrictive I can't have, I need loose. Xx

I have that and I wear it with converse
It's not frumpy, it's lovely
It washes great and doesn't need ironing

Tell him to get to fuck and you look fabulous in anything 😁

Aw thank you, he's having deep regret having said anything at all lol. He's said it was a tongue in cheek joke and he's got a lot of grovelling to do 😂
I'm hoping it arrives before Sunday but I doubt it. I've another Monsoon dress that's nice on my skin but it's got long sleeves and it might be a bit warm. Xx

@Hal9001 I regularly ask my dh and dd ‘Do I look mutton in this?’ It’s not hate speech.

There's a big difference between jokingly asking your husband that and describing another woman as "mutton dressed as lamb". It's not hate speech but it's still a nasty misogynistic thing to say.

And I see you ask your daughter, up to you but I personally might think twice about suggesting to my (theoretical) daughter that such an ageist, misogynistic attitude was acceptable - "does this suit me?/ does this look good on me"? should be sufficient.

"Aged frump" which one poster has used a couple of times is awful too.
