My DH suggesting I'm "getting old" because I've ordered from Seasalt

WoofWoofBeachLife · 08/06/2023 07:27

I saw a lovely wee dress last night on Seasalt, I have some money saved for a clothes makeover and decided to go for it. My DH said last night it was nice but isn't Seasalt for older women 😆 I'm 51 in July and I don't think it looks like an OAP website. Now I'm thinking, shit should I send it back?
I just want a few quality pieces I can add to, I've not bought myself anything in a long long time due to illness. We are going shopping to a shopping centre on Sunday and I'm reluctant to browse with him hovering now x

*I had to google what the issue is with mutton dressed as lamb and came across an article interviewing Carol Voderman.

To be clear, any woman can wear what she likes BUT with age you would expect a refinement of style, greater understanding of what garments are flattering and more classy style. Because the woman is older and more experienced.

I would think someone in their 60s dressing as Rihanna did at 19 all a bit ridiculous and unlikely to look well for most - which is what I meant by the term.*

Did Google not explain Robinni that the phrase refers to an old butchering practice? Do you really think it's ok to compare women to pieces of meat?

@Floisme

I’m not getting into this.

I did not realise it could be offensive, it’s quite a common turn of phrase.

Apologies if anyone was offended.

It is an observation that older ladies are less likely to be able to get away with being scantily clad in cheap clothing. And most have the sense to recognise this. That is all.

AdmiralJaneway · 08/06/2023 20:15

If you like it wear it!! I have a Seasalt sweater I’ve had for years and I’m 48!!

notwavingbutdrowning1 · 08/06/2023 20:25

My usual size fits me and I was feeling good about treating myself. Now I read here that the clothes I like are massive, dowdy and frumpy. Why can't people just say they're not to their taste?

@Flippersmum , some people are horrid and their derogatory comments reveal more about them than they do about your taste. Lots of people look fab in Seasalt and I bet you do too.

WoofWoofBeachLife · 08/06/2023 20:38

@Crikeyalmighty I love that dress! It's just a bit too short for me, with my wee legs though. X

I agree. There are some posters who are really snobby about clothes shops.

Beachhutnut · 08/06/2023 21:07

I am early 40's and love seasalt!

NatashaDancing · 08/06/2023 21:28

RosesAndHellebores · 08/06/2023 09:31

It fills the space vacated by Laura Ashley for me. I loved Laura Ashley in my 20s/30s. I'm now in my 60s.

I loved Laura Ashley in its heyday. I don't think Seasalt is anything like it.

Robinni · 08/06/2023 19:42

@Aixellency are you honestly telling me that a 50 year old woman wouldn’t have more sense and style than a teenager?!

Check out the outfits in Rihanna shut up and drive vid they are awful, I would like to think an older woman would realise this. She probably does!

I don’t think you understand what fashion is. You’re quite fixated on its function over form (you’ve mentioned a few times about the animals and the caring), and that is should be altered by the age of your bones. No. That’s not fashion. That’s just clothes.

I will never let the age of my body make me feel that I should dress a certain way, in case someone judgmental finds it unseemly.

I don’t think age has a uniform.

explainthistomeplease · 08/06/2023 21:33

I'll wear their Bretons. But apart from that I find their clothes shapeless. They tend towards quite square cuts which 'hide' the body. I don't know if that makes their clothes more prone to be worn by older women or not.

NatashaDancing · 08/06/2023 21:40

Falafelfiend · 08/06/2023 09:48

See I would rather wear Seasalt than these. No offence. Because these look like the clothes my mum used to make for me when I was 5. Can anyone wear a piecrust frill these days? And pay £200 for it?

I have to admit I don't understand Style. I am not loyal to any one shop; I just by quite simple clothing with no frills and yokes.

I have Batsheva. Batsheva isn't much like Seasalt. Seasalt is nice. It's in the Boden and Toast ball park. I don't have any of them but they're all nice, wearable clothes, without floating my boat.

RampantIvy · 08/06/2023 21:48

But apart from that I find their clothes shapeless.

Some of them are and some aren't.

NatashaDancing · 08/06/2023 21:49

Falafelfiend · 08/06/2023 10:31

Ok. Other than Bathsheva, can anyone link to a stylish dress under £100 in natural fibres? Genuinely asking. Suitable for a 52 yr old, size 10. I am not normally an S and B regular.

I sometimes see stuff on Cos I like but it's always polyester.

Everything in Palava is natural fibres made in the UK, but start at around £150.

Community Clothing have pure cotton dresses made in the UK at under a £100.

"Stylish" is subjective, I personally like both these brands.Community Clothing

I don't think shapeless dull colours are only to be found in Seasalt. Look at this monstrosity from Cos. https://www.cos.com/en_gbp/women/womenswear/dresses/product.voluminous-v-neck-dress-green.1199474003.html

I really like that. It's a Max Mara dupe.

RampantIvy · 08/06/2023 21:48

But apart from that I find their clothes shapeless.

Some of them are and some aren't.

And also what might be shapeless on one body type might suit another. Square cut tends to work reasonably well for my shape - very defined waists look awful on me.

Of course it's offensive.

You can Google the fuck out of it but,

There's no male equivalent.

Crikeyalmighty · 08/06/2023 12:36

@RampantIvy Yep- and it only goes to a 16 and one size- so suspect it wouldn't fit !!

I bought this in the end- I'm sure it's not trendy but will get a lot of wear!! With or without leggings!!

I do like this brand- they support a lot of small individual brands, nice styles , some sensible, some a bit funkier and are are UK based unlike a lot of those things you see that look lovely but come from China and are hard to return (I don't have any connection with them ) - I don't really like buying clothes online - but hey sometimes I really struggle at the high st- especially after closure of Debenhams, Wallis, Dotty perkins etc

www.silkfred.com/womens/clothing/dresses/day-dresses/mela-london/zip-detail-tunic-dress-in-black

I don't think I've ever seen anything on SilkFred, but it might be because the selfie in the mirror pose is so off putting.

And that's not my cup of tea at all. The shape and colour just wouldn't suit me.

I am an older woman by the way! 57, so older than OP.

Falafelfiend · 08/06/2023 13:00

I am questioning my taste now. Does anyone like this? I love it but yes, of course it's polyester which makes me itch. Also expensive. Should I buy this for a work event? Bright colours suit me.

Florencia Dress - Fuschia - Recycled polyester - Sézane (sezane.com)

No I don't like it. It looks much cheaper than it is. My opinion is however irrelevant.

Crikeyalmighty · 08/06/2023 22:16

@WoofWoofBeachLife the fatface dress is actually just onto my knees - so longer than it looks here - probably because I'm not a willowy 5ft 9 etc!!!

Crikeyalmighty · 08/06/2023 22:17

@NatashaDancing yes the selfie thing is bloody annoying-

Please don’t be patronising.

I have seen similar trends exhibited in all the highstreet shops. The reason I would choose to buy from SS, FF, Joules etc over for example H&M, Zara is purely down to quality and practicality i.e. I can buy the same trendy blouse in a better quality and more durable material from the former; this is why it’s more expensive. I would opt to have cotton over polyester for example but a similar design.

As for older women wearing younger fashions; it depends on the woman some can get away with it and it looks great. Some can’t.

Wear what you want and be happy.

@Robinni, really?

Really?

You have really never heard the phrase, and if you have it's a positive phrase?

Bollox. Honestly. I'm not having that for a minute.

Hal9001 · 08/06/2023 22:29

Older ladies?

Scantily clad?

@Robinni, behave yourself.
