My DH suggesting I'm "getting old" because I've ordered from Seasalt

WoofWoofBeachLife · 08/06/2023 07:27

I saw a lovely wee dress last night on Seasalt, I have some money saved for a clothes makeover and decided to go for it. My DH said last night it was nice but isn't Seasalt for older women 😆 I'm 51 in July and I don't think it looks like an OAP website. Now I'm thinking, shit should I send it back?
I just want a few quality pieces I can add to, I've not bought myself anything in a long long time due to illness. We are going shopping to a shopping centre on Sunday and I'm reluctant to browse with him hovering now x

It does give that vibe of getting on in years / approaching retirement age. However it’s personal choice and one man’s trash is another man’s treasure as they say ( not saying sea salt is trash !)

Theos · 08/06/2023 17:55

Zara largely.

See I think leggings (or slim riding trousers) t shirt and joules gilet especially in a nice plaid, boots and wellies of course incl Le Chameau! will never ever be frumpy!!

Oh my god

Crikeyalmighty · 08/06/2023 17:59

That's all that matters @Flippersmum .

I bought this one last week from the much derided (on here) FatFace and personally I think it looks great. It might not be 'on trend ' but it's well made, affordable (for me) fits nicely and it actually doesn't make me look fat- I can ask no more!!

I'm 26 and have a few tops from there, their stripy ones are nice. Your DH is being unhelpful and rude!!

WoofWoofBeachLife · 08/06/2023 18:11

@Jesseweneedtocook Iiked the striped t shirts too. X
@MysteryBelle I think @Theos might need a defibrillator 🤣 xx

This thread made me wonder where your Hubster get his clothes from and whether we'd have any opinions on his choices.

MrsRachelDanvers · 08/06/2023 18:23

Flakey99 · 08/06/2023 10:18

🤣🤣 Good grief!

No, it just demonstrates that he’s a bit of a prick. Criticising someone’s clothing choices is not a sign of love. 🤦🏻‍♀️

If a man wants to show he’s interested in his partner, he listens to her, pays attention and does nice things just for her, possibly even to his own detriment.

Now I actually think it’s fun to have some banter with my dh. If he puts something on which looks old mannish, I’ll tease him about it. As he will do me-neither is offended and it’s often funny. If I think he looks nice, I’ll say it-he does to me all the time. Passing an honest opinion on clothes is no big deal-and the comments from the OP’s dh do sound bang on! But if it’s what you like, so what?

I love this dress-I would say its very on trend in the green and broderie is everywhere this year too.

‘Mutton dressed as lamb’ is a really awful thing to say. I understand you may have been piqued by some of the more robust comments on this thread but come on, let’s leave the misogynistic spew out of it.

@Tiddlypomtiddlypom

I had to google what the issue is with mutton dressed as lamb and came across an article interviewing Carol Voderman.

To be clear, any woman can wear what she likes BUT with age you would expect a refinement of style, greater understanding of what garments are flattering and more classy style. Because the woman is older and more experienced.

I would think someone in their 60s dressing as Rihanna did at 19 all a bit ridiculous and unlikely to look well for most - which is what I meant by the term.

@Sunshineishere1988 oh thank you- that's as on trend as I probably get!! Does look nice on and the fabric is good. Even better was I tried it on in 16 and18 and the 16 fitted- result- sale!!

Flippersmum · 08/06/2023 18:42

@Crikeyalmighty that's pretty!
I also like the fact that they're very good quality clothes and should last a long time, which is important for the environment too.

I bet you look fab in it! I went in the store recently and loved so much in there. Enjoy wearing your new fabulous dress! 👗

AntiStuff · 08/06/2023 14:45

@Robinni

Just because a woman likes to garden, keep fit or whatever doesn’t mean she isn’t interested in fashion.

Well we agree on something then. I was being a bit lazy using those activities as a shorthand for Seasalt woman, as I'm actually extremely invested in how my allotment is doing and I swim year round in my local river AND I'm still interested in fashion.

My gardening/dog walking clothes are distinct from my work/going out wardrobe though.

This is what I was getting at before @AntiStuff, it’s all lifestyle related.

I spend a lot of time outdoors and caring for people so I need a really practical wardrobe for pretty much all aspects of my life now.

If I’m socialising, it’s more like bbqs/meals at friends rather than “out out”.

I still love fashion but I tend to invest more in handbags than clothes now as just no need for very fancy clothing.

Crikeyalmighty · 08/06/2023 19:18

@Sunshineishere1988 they do have hit and miss seasons- but I think this summer there's some really nice things. Thing is I have plain and printed jersey wrap dresses and similar from there that I've had 7 or 8 years and still going strong - wash well - honestly at 61 it's about as on trend as I feel I can be --as places like Zara simply don't cater for the chunkier customer or it seems anyone under 5ft 6 in many styles. I used to get a lot from Wallis (RIP)

boboshmobo · 08/06/2023 19:20

I'm 48 and wouldn't wear sea salt but I'd say I probably should be their target audience .

Robinni · 08/06/2023 19:24

amoretti · 08/06/2023 16:01

@robinni
I'm cabin crew
Hubby works from home

I just couldn't bear wearing any of these clothes as to me they are so boring and plain and for people with no style! Or for people who couldn't care less what they look like!

I wear Zara, H&M, Karen Millen, and yes the occasional M&S as recently they've got more with it and less staid

Also I buy abroad - especially in Europe where there are so many beautiful shops with stylish clothes!

Sorry but Seasalt etc are just horrendous

@amoretti your job requires you to look the part and be quite glam, wear heels, skirt, make up. I’m guessing you’re 20s?

Mine requires me to do outdoor work with/without animals. And in my home life I have to care for people. I couldn’t wear what you do…

I can’t wear Zara or H&M trousers as I am pear shaped and they are cut for slim build women… just don’t fit properly… either too tight, or a massive gap around the waist. I do like M&S, if I am going for occasion outfits I usually head to HOF, quite like Mint Velvet or Oliver Bonas for drinks/coffee type outfits. As I say for the day to day it’s mostly FF, Joules, Cotswolds… had been thinking about Seasalt hence my interest in the thread.

(My underlining.) You know that’s a completely ridiculous and baseless statement, @Robinni - and one I can’t believe you’re actually presenting to sentient, presumably literate adults.

oakleaffy · 08/06/2023 16:43

@Robinni It was me who posted the pic of the 80 plus woman I know
She is indeed very outdoorsy and this was cold weather-
One would feel uncomfortable walking miles in leather trousers and heels as hellebore said her mother wears.

I wish I had genetics of the 80 plus woman!

Keeping to a healthy weight is important- as is good posture.

Some people look old before their time due to poor posture.

@oakleaffy

I agree! One of my parents is obsessed with the outdoors and active wear… other parent died early and it started a whole health kick!

For reference the one who passed was a leather trousers and blazers type… arguably people may prioritise longevity over fashion. I don’t think you can knock that at any age.

@Aixellency are you honestly telling me that a 50 year old woman wouldn’t have more sense and style than a teenager?!

Check out the outfits in Rihanna shut up and drive vid they are awful, I would like to think an older woman would realise this. She probably does!

Did Google not explain Robinni that the phrase refers to an old butchering practice? Do you really think it's ok to compare women to pieces of meat?

LorraineInSpain · 08/06/2023 19:46

A lot of teenagers have a fabulous sense of style.

The things that look great on a teenager often don’t look great on someone slightly older and probably saggier , but that doesn’t mean the older woman’s style is better or worse, just different

Floisme · 08/06/2023 19:47

Apologies for quote malfunction.The first 3 paragraphs are Robinni's post.

I had to reply to this. I asked for some Seasalt boots for Christmas (aged 37) and I love them! I’ve been eyeing up their Breton tops too. It never once occurred to me that it’s an OAP shop - it’s not like its Damart 😂
