My DH suggesting I'm "getting old" because I've ordered from Seasalt

WoofWoofBeachLife · 08/06/2023 07:27

I saw a lovely wee dress last night on Seasalt, I have some money saved for a clothes makeover and decided to go for it. My DH said last night it was nice but isn't Seasalt for older women 😆 I'm 51 in July and I don't think it looks like an OAP website. Now I'm thinking, shit should I send it back?
I just want a few quality pieces I can add to, I've not bought myself anything in a long long time due to illness. We are going shopping to a shopping centre on Sunday and I'm reluctant to browse with him hovering now x

You see just to give you an example that it's about items and not brands - here's a (what I think is rather nice) dress/top on sea salt and one on Cos. Personally I think the cos one looks far frumpier than the sea salt one .

www.seasaltcornwall.com/wave-wing-v-neck-jersey-dress?color=35123

www.cos.com/en_gbp/women/womenswear/dresses/product.voluminous-v-neck-dress-green.1199474003.html

I'd have to disagree with you there. The Seasalt one is minging. But I agree with your general point - if we cut the labels out of everything, there would be some nice stuff and some grim stuff from all these brands. We're biased to judge some more harshly than others, based on our perceptions of the brand.

Crikeyalmighty · 08/06/2023 15:50

@Falafelfiend brilliant minds think alike- it's really not nice and I can't see who it would suit either!!! To me- that's frumpy !! I went into M&S earlier and it's bizzare - half the clothes look like they were designed to suit Theresa May and the other half are all puff sleeved and ruffle hems- like something off little house on the prairie.-- none of which suit me.

Crikeyalmighty · 08/06/2023 15:56

@MissLucyEyelesbarrow Yep- appreciate if it's not your taste- to be honest it wouldn't suit me one bit- but I used as an example --as it's not dissimilar to stuff I have seen in places like Cos -

Your point is correct though- all of these brands have the odd bits I like and lots I don't. Being far too hefty at moment (but on a downward trend) to be honest I'm more bothered if something fits , is comfortable and doesn't make me look huge!!!

In fact this whole post has just made me go upstairs and have a wardrobe clear out!!

I just couldn't bear wearing any of these clothes as to me they are so boring and plain and for people with no style! Or for people who couldn't care less what they look like!

I wear Zara, H&M, Karen Millen, and yes the occasional M&S as recently they've got more with it and less staid

Also I buy abroad - especially in Europe where there are so many beautiful shops with stylish clothes!

Sorry but Seasalt etc are just horrendous

LorraineInSpain · 08/06/2023 16:09

Karen Millen would be fine if it didn’t have so much polyester

Falafelfiend · 08/06/2023 16:09

Oh good someone said M and S because I quite like them these days.

@amoretti Your negative and derogatory remarks about other people's taste in clothes says more about you than it does about people who wear Seasalt etc.

There is really no need to be so rude and sneery. I don't shop in Fatface or Joules and only buy the very occasional piece from Seasalt and White Stuff (non patterned and bright colours only), but unlike you, I don't feel superior because I have a different taste in clothes.

The last few items ofclothing I have bought were from Next, Uniqlo, M & S and H and M.

I hope you aren't this rude to your passengers.

You sound like a raging snob. Do you vet all your friends to ensure they meet your style standards?

RampantIvy · 08/06/2023 16:33

As an aside, the Seasalt catalogue came through the post today.

I won't be buying anything. We have had no summer yet this year (and there is nothing that caught my eye).

Stylish people can wear clothes from most shops and make them work... if you have to rely on a label, you might need to work a bit more on your "style".

You also find most of the same stores in "Europe" as you do in England 😂

Just a thought...

Falafelfiend · 08/06/2023 16:43

I will own up to having a navy blue Joules jumper. It doesn't have bees, flowers, or little dogs on it. Just a basic cotton jumper. I simply don't see how it is any more frumpy than any other navy jumper. I bought it because it was cotton.

oakleaffy · 08/06/2023 16:43

Robinni · 08/06/2023 13:35

@RosesAndHellebores I would suspect said woman engages in outdoor pursuits and keeps active.

What was your mother’s job/lifestyle throughout life.

Respectfully - leather trousers, blazers and frilly frocks are not going to help me do land surveys, work with livestock or walk through national parks….

If we go with the mantra that women have to wear the sort of garments you listed for your mother. Then we are saying that only a slim selection of “ladies who lunch” that have certain jobs and a cleaner are acceptable.

Doesn’t seem very progressive.

@Robinni It was me who posted the pic of the 80 plus woman I know
She is indeed very outdoorsy and this was cold weather-
One would feel uncomfortable walking miles in leather trousers and heels as hellebore said her mother wears.

I wish I had genetics of the 80 plus woman!

Keeping to a healthy weight is important- as is good posture.

Some people look old before their time due to poor posture.

Crikeyalmighty · 08/06/2023 16:46

@Falafelfiend I will confess to a joules long sleeved jersey dress/top that's navy blue with pink roses all over it- the kind you wear over leggings
I loved it so much , it actually wore out

Crikeyalmighty · 08/06/2023 16:49

@originalglazedsingle with the exception of C&A ! I've bought so many clothes from the Palma branch of this- not remotely cool I know, but I've got some really nice bits from it.

mathanxiety · 08/06/2023 16:55

He's not wrong.

However, he's kidding himself if he thinks you're some kind of spring chicken.

You should wear whatever you like all the same. You don't need to dress to pander to your H's insecurities or taste or delusions.

My advice - go shopping on your own or with a friend, not your H.

mathanxiety · 08/06/2023 16:57

WoofWoofBeachLife · 08/06/2023 07:58

On a plus note, I'm well enough now to collect my teeth whitening trays from the dentist this morning. That's another little boost for my chops. He did also ask if I would have Turkey teeth later 🤣🤣🤣 he thinks he's hilarious. He can be rather, what's the word? Not realising the impact of his words? A big fanny lol xx

The word is boorish.

TheCreamTeaWasFromMe · 08/06/2023 16:57

I also make a beeline for C&A when I'm in Spain. Very good for basics. Even better if you can time it for a 'sin IVA' sale and get a discount!

Crikeyalmighty · 08/06/2023 17:13

@TheCreamTeaWasFromMe Yep- well priced and good quality too . Ooh yes I love a 'sin IVA ' sale.
My H also has a fair few bits from there. Good shirts and linen casual trousers etc

I've bought a few nice pricier bits from El Corte ingles too.

Falafelfiend · 08/06/2023 11:58

I sometimes think there should be two sub-boards- one for Fashion and the other for people who just want reasonably priced, fitted, practical clothes in natural fabrics ( me). I can see those who know about Fashion are very frustrated with the rest of us, but the thing is there is no place for incredibly expensive frocks which get stuck in my bike wheels in my post-pandemic world.

Yes.
I'm 52 and today received my first Seasalt dress in the post from ebay. Can't afford their prices new. I am autistic and can't bear the feel of artificial fabrics. My usual size fits me and I was feeling good about treating myself. Now I read here that the clothes I like are massive, dowdy and frumpy. Why can't people just say they're not to their taste?

Floisme · 08/06/2023 17:28

If you believe moving out all the posters who are interested in fashion will make this board a friendly place again then, with the greatest respect, I don't think you've been paying attention.

Crikeyalmighty · 08/06/2023 17:32

@Flippersmum hope it looks utterly fab on you!!! Ignore the fashionistas on here who make you feel bad for actually wanting to look good at a price you can afford.

MysteryBelle · 08/06/2023 17:34

WoofWoofBeachLife · 08/06/2023 11:18

Hopefully it will look bloody smashing and makes a change from my daily walking attire which is leggings, t shirt and sometimes a Joules gilet 🤗 walking boots or wellies. Are Le Chameau frumpy too? 😄
Thank you for the comments you have all made me smile and laugh. Xx

See I think leggings (or slim riding trousers) t shirt and joules gilet especially in a nice plaid, boots and wellies of course incl Le Chameau! will never ever be frumpy!!

mastertomsmum · 08/06/2023 17:40

Mirabai · 08/06/2023 10:19

I agree with your DH Seasalt is very dowdy. And their sizing is massive.

Dowdy and colourful at the same time, I don’t get that. H and M is full of dull and boring this year with the odd flash of colour and flipping neon, yuk

Flippersmum · 08/06/2023 17:46

@Crikeyalmighty thank you. I think it's pretty and being cotton makes it cool which is important in this weather. Someone said to me today it fitted my shape well.
I do care what I look like. But I also have to dress for my shape, my budget, my sensory needs and my lifestyle. I don't work or go out socially. I do garden and walk several miles a day.

gogohmm · 08/06/2023 17:47

@amoretti

Can't stand Zara clothes myself, so poor fitting. H&M is cheap but again poorly made. We all have different tastes, different body types, I hope you aren't so judgemental to your passengers
