W@dudsville Yes! Lovely on you .
It may have the Amish vibe worn with bare feet , but it could change according to shoes, earrings etc .
I recently bought some spectacular orange platform sandals from Clergerie via Farfetch : they would look amazing . Wish I’d not returned because they felt dressy . I sometimes think Toast clothes need that injection of glam from another label .

dudsville · 20/06/2023 09:55

Forgot to say, DH said he likes it, which "disappointed" me, I told him I was prepared to tell MN his comical response!

@ScottishMouse , I don't think one can be too fussy about clothes, but it sounds like you have a higher benchmark than I do. I do get a lot of joy out of wearing my things, but individual items don't always tick all the boxes, and if I'm still happy to wear an item then I will. For example, the olive oil dress is a summer colour and I'm a winter, so it doesn't suit my skin, but it does look good with my hair, and otherwise it's a perfect summer dress that makes me very happy, and I do get lots of compliements when I wear it - those compliments aren't from high fashion folks who I'm sure wouldn't agree!

My mum, aunt and nan were all great at making their own clothes. I tried but cannot do that, but I am able to take off a sleeve and change it from "blouson" to a straight sleeve, for example, or, like I said upthread, just pull a little thread through a gathered waist to gather it more.

When I overhauled my wardrobe a few years back my primary question was "do I love it?", then does it fit, and does it feel like me, even if it is a style change. The question as to whether something flatters my shape, I'm curvy and the things that flater most are fitted and show that I have a wasit, but I'm not happy in those things anymore so I've sat that question on the back burner.

If I feel a lack of confidence about an item but I love it then I just make myself wear it. I don't look in mirrors thorughout the day, so I don't have to see it, as such, and then I get used to it.

Saurus72 · 20/06/2023 10:05

@ScottishMouse I tried both and bought the navy (I think it’s called slate). It says it’s the ‘new’ sizing but I bought my usuals Toast dress size which was still pretty generous.

ilovecherries · 20/06/2023 10:06

breezy day in Scotland so wearing the Maya dress from last year that I bought preloved on the buy and sell page. Love it. And so soft. Still doing campsite chic 😀

Does anyone know how to get these marks out of my toast shirt? No idea what it is but it's right on the front.
I put it away at the end of last summer after trying all the normal things, vanish etc, but I really want to wear it again.

Dee1224 · 20/06/2023 10:29

@Theteapotsbrokenspout - did you scrub the vanish in and leave to soak for a while? I did that with my koya Dhuggie that - somehow- I got stained and the mark came out. However, in interests of full disclosure, it did also lighten the spot slightly afterwards.

Some people swear by baking soda - good luck!

Dee1224 · 20/06/2023 10:30

Alternatively- could you take it to Toast? They might embroider over it for you as a repair.

Stravaig · 20/06/2023 10:31

@Theteapotsbrokenspout If you have a Sonett stockist nearby, you could try their gall soap? Comes in bar or liquid form.

Theteapotsbrokenspout · 20/06/2023 10:33

@Dee1224 Yes, I tried that with the vanish, haven’t tried the baking soda though.
Did wonder about the embroidery thing, that would be a last resort as I’m so far from a shop.

ilovecherries · 20/06/2023 10:34

I have to be careful I don’t go to Handmaiden like with dresses as I’m completely bald - have been for 40 years. I do have a huge wig collection but increasingly I’m happy to go au natural. While I do always wear makeup and jewellery when I’m bald I need to be careful I don’t look too austere. I was quite upset a couple of years ago, as I think I’ve mentioned before. I was wearing the drop waist shirt dress in dark maroon, no hair and no makeup (on the beach!). I heard a child ask his mother why that lady was so ugly and she replied shhh, she’s a nun.

Theteapotsbrokenspout · 20/06/2023 10:36

That’s interesting @Stravaig , I’ve never heard of Sonett, thank you, I’ll see if I can find a local stockist.

Dee1224 · 20/06/2023 10:41

@Noeggsontoast - I read your thoughtful post with interest - it reminded me of advice I read recently about accepting the way you are NOW and dressing accordingly.

I tried to have a cull recently but didn’t get very far as I have a lot of things I really like, but can’t get into - atm, (she says optimistically 🤣).

I envy those with capsule wardrobes!

Dee1224 · 20/06/2023 10:44

@ilovecherries - children, (and indeed some adults), can be very cruel. You are beautiful and strong and so are we all!

dudsville · 20/06/2023 10:48

Oh, @ilovecherries , that's an awful memory to have. It's hard to let go of things like that. I'm glad for you that you're embracing your body. That child and mother should not influence the choices you make. A long time ago I gained some weight after a series of pregnancies that didn't result in a child, I'm ok about that, that's not the point. Anyway, I went out with friends ice skating and was holding on the side for dear life and laughing and having fun when someone kind of ran into me in the slo-mo way that can happen, and she apologised gasping "oh my god you're pregnant, I'm so sorry". I also haven't forgotten that. Truth was my body had changed by life circumstances. I see other people out and about who's bodies have also had to adjust to changes life brings. I know that there will be people who aren't skilled in manageing this, and it wouldn't be fair to have hide or cover the impacts of life on our bodies.

Dee1224 · 20/06/2023 10:56

So true @dudsville.

Dee1224 · 20/06/2023 11:00

Btw: I was just about to order the ticking dress in small, but it’s sold out 🤣

ilovecherries · 20/06/2023 11:02

Very true, Dudsville. Funnily enough, it was the mother saying I was a nun that somehow upset me more than the child who was making an observation from more limited language. He could have meant unusual/bald anything and not had a word to encompass that. On the other hand, one of my happy memories is a Black woman in London who was also completely bald who as she was walking towards me high-fived me and said ‘looking good, sister!’

That’s so nice @ilovecherries - try remember that instead!

I read an article recently that said our brains are programmed to remember negative experiences and comments rather than pleasant so that we ‘learn’ from them. Since then I have been trying very hard to ‘forget’ past unpleasantness , or at least not give a nasty memory the oxygen of publicity if/when it rears its ugly head!

Dee1224 · 20/06/2023 11:17

@Saurus72 I have a lot of tops, jumpers and dresses from Anthropologie- I used to love their stuff, but I think they have ‘gone off’ recently.

I still like my old stuff, (even if some of it doesn’t fit as well as it used to 🙃).

ToastCosILoveIt · 20/06/2023 11:33

@ilovecherries , hold on to the positives, you always sound wonderful in your posts.

I have reassessed the men’s wear and I think it comes up fairly small. I have reordered a couple of Theo teeshirts for my husband in large and the medium were too small. He is 5ft 11 and around 11.5 stones so hardly big but very often the mediums in shirts and tees are too small for him.

I am really enjoying the chat around the philosophy of clothes and trying to hone some tips for not buying too much.

Stoic123 · 20/06/2023 11:35

@ilovecherries - I remember you mentioning before as I have the same dress which is an unusual colour and beautfully cut/very flattering. The mum would have glanced for 2 secs and brain would have connected dress colour and hair without any real evaluation. If she'd taken a proper look, would have realised her error.

That’s interesting. I have recently been trying to notice one nice thing every day - to catch myself feeling happy, I suppose, and I think it has been helping to lift me out of the doldrums.

in light of @ScottishMouse's musing this morning, I had a good look at my summer wardrobe. Took a photo - it's all Toast in this shot. Crumbs!

Play spot the item you own/tried on... 😂

@Stoic123 Looking at your wardrobe picture I realised that I also have 4 cotton and cotton/linen dresses with small black&white check.
No wonder I lack a surplus on the bank account 😂
