Right so we should stop wearing...

...floral midi/maxi dress with white trainers because it’s ubiquitous, a ‘middle aged women’s summer uniform’ (can’t forget the cropped denim jacket)

Beige, cream, camels any neutrals because it’s dull and bland.

Skinny jeans are out, they are not trendy.

What else should we stop wearing?

Tick? Fuck

Northernsoul72 · 03/06/2023 15:46

Saw this a while ago and I'm stealing it. The answer is the weight of other peoples expectations!

Maireas · 03/06/2023 15:47

@SirChenjins - a few years ago, in a shoe shop, I saw a woman try on a pair of those sky high Laboutins. She teetered in agony across the floor, her face contorted in pain before telling the assistant "yes, I'll take them" 😄

IbizaToTheNorfolkBroads · 03/06/2023 15:48

We should stop wearing the weight of other people's opinions.

I'm a middle age women, I havn't worn a floral dress since about 1980.

I saw two young girls out in town wearing bodies (you know the leotard type things) but with the crotch poppers undone and hanging down. Wtf? Is this a new thing?

Ha! I saw a this in the week and thought it must be an accidental un-popping, and nearly tapped her on the shoulder. Thank god I didn’t

😂

providing your style is ‘edgy’ (whatever the tick that is) no-one will notice your bleeding, bound feet.

Problem is to hide the bleeding bound feet you'd need long trousers or a maxi skirt but to be edgy you need a cropped "trouser" flapping around your calf

Crayfishforyou · 03/06/2023 15:50

I always stick to mainly vintage clothes.
I’m gutted skinny jeans are back again, I’ve never liked wearing them and I was trendy for about 5 minutes there in my flares and mom jeans 😂😂

They’re not back, they never went. They’re just a staple.

‘Tis true ☹️

So many (completely arbitrary and ridiculous) rules on S&B - what’s a gal to do? 🤷‍♀️

2bazookas · 03/06/2023 16:01

I've given up wearing corsets , bustles and bonnets.

MrsMiddleMother · 03/06/2023 16:01

Went into primark for the first time In a while yesterday and wouldn't fit in or wear most so I'm just going to stick to the middle aged mum clothes and be 'unfashionable'

Maireas · 03/06/2023 16:02

2bazookas · 03/06/2023 16:01

I've given up wearing corsets , bustles and bonnets.

I tried to, but then it's hard to look coquettish at a gentleman in his carriage unless you're in a bonnet.

SallyWD · 03/06/2023 16:04

I wear whatever I want. Couldn't care less what's fashionable or not.

SoftCoeur · 03/06/2023 16:05

Don't care what anyone wears, but can people stop repeating that thing about the weight of other people's expectations? Been posted in various iterations about 10 times now, like some sort of cult mantra.

Apparently Vejas have peaked, which makes me sad, because they're the most comfortable trainers I've ever found - plus they look great. We're supposed to wear coloured trainers now.

I started wear them a couple of years ago, but sold both pairs of veja trainers recently. I felt self conscious wearing them as they're everywhere. I realise that's my issue, but I felt like a sheep. They weren't my most comfortable trainers anyway.

NewNovember · 03/06/2023 16:12

LolaMoon · 03/06/2023 10:35

Eh, I don’t care if something is in or out. I wear what suits me. I think wearing something that doesn’t flatter you simply because it’s “in” is far more stupid and ridiculous. People that follow rules are just sheep. Personally I’m not a fan of floral because it’s just not me. I’m more into the rock chick look so that’s what I wear but I can appreciate it suits others. Wear what you like and relish the liberation it brings. I see fashion as a form of self expression so express who you are and don’t GAF what others think. You may not like how they dress either but it really and truly doesn’t matter!

conversely it's very boring to still be wearing the same style for 15 years and not move with the times.

DeliciouslyDecadent · 03/06/2023 16:12

You do know that the 'advice' on 'what to wear and not to wear' is a marketing ploy simply to sell more clothes?

Look at flares- jeans. They were the thing in the late 60s and 70s, then no one would be seen dead in them and now flares and girlfriend girls are the 'thing'.

2bazookas · 03/06/2023 16:20

Maireas · 03/06/2023 16:02

A lady should not be hitch-hiking in carriages. But if you must, I recommend you use a fan to attract attention. Write your destination on the fan and just flash it briefly, taking care not to scare the horses.

JustToBeMe · 03/06/2023 16:21

I have just posted this on another thread!

Wear what your comfortable in!, who gives a T**s about anyone else 🤷‍♀️

"Im 57 in a couple of months, I do wonder once in a blue moon, if not several blue moons, if I dress for my age, ie generally skinny jeans, t-shirt, hoodie/sweatshirt, trainers, mostly black, it's my comfort zone...
However im going on my first holiday abroad In almost 31 years, to visit relatives, I've just brought myself a white denim jacket..
Which is definitely out my comfort zone, but I like it, so im wearing It, although it needs a few washes to loose that 'newness', its comfortable.

And tbh I've never really given a toss what people think, each to their own an all that"

Maireas · 03/06/2023 16:22

@2bazookas , I do use a fan. I always wear lace mittens as well. Nothing says "feminine" like impractical, annoying items of clothing.

Yep, I was with other mums and we were wondering if we should tell them 😂sounds like it’s become A Thing!

TheDogsMother · 03/06/2023 16:42

I'm firmly in the floral dress and trainer camp but at my age I suspect I am invisible to practically everyone so it doesn't matter what I wear.

OhYeahDefinitely · 03/06/2023 16:47

I think the floral midi and trainer look has become the equivalent of jeans. Just a comfy, practical, low effort look - not meant to be cutting edge.

I personally never wore it as if it’s warm enough for a dress in my book, it’s too hot for trainers and I’m cracking out my sandals, But I totally get why it’s so popular and …well…I don’t think anyone is going out thinking ‘wow, I look SO damn hot and super edgy in my floral midi and New Balance’ - it’s just a practical everyday outfit, surely?

tinytemper66 · 03/06/2023 16:50

Absolutely 👍

You're right @OhYeahDefinitely - I looked in the mirror before going out this afternoon and said "Meh, not bad for an old bitch' 🤣
