Right so we should stop wearing...

...floral midi/maxi dress with white trainers because it’s ubiquitous, a ‘middle aged women’s summer uniform’ (can’t forget the cropped denim jacket)

Beige, cream, camels any neutrals because it’s dull and bland.

Skinny jeans are out, they are not trendy.

What else should we stop wearing?

I’m old, I’ll admit it, because underwear as outer wear gives me the ick big time. Whilst I admire the bigger girls embracing their bodies and joining in the fashion for shorty cycling shorts and vest, my chub rub versions give me more coverage and I’d be mortified if anyone but me knew I was wearing them!! In the past week I’ve seen a lot of one piece versions too - even less flattering and surely a bloody inconvenience 7 or 8 times a day! And what’s happened to our obsession with having no VPL?

I’m holding on to my skirt and trainers combo. Like previous comments, it’s comfortable, practical and hobbling in heels doesn’t suit anyone of any age. Save the pretty shoes for the office and weddings.

Are we going to see puffy sliders on our feet for the next few years? Think I’ll skip it, my big feet are big enough!

@Ffariee I have a weird thing about needing pockets

That's not weird, that is divine, being at one with the universe 😉

It's getting easier to find dresses with pockets, though they're often natural fibre so cost more.

Right so we should stop wearing...
Ffariee · 05/06/2023 08:49

Oh I love this!

(I don’t think my sarcasm came across about the pockets but I know it’s not weird 😁 I actively message clothing chains to add pockets- most recently TU Sainsbury’s as they have removed pockets from recent clothing much to my dismay. Why do babies get pockets but we don’t?!)

Stravaig · 05/06/2023 08:52

@Ffariee I confess, I just love sharing that quote!

You're so right about baby and toddler clothes, why on earth?

Mummydrama · 05/06/2023 09:01

Apparently its not dresses and trainers that is out. Its dresses with white trainers. Coloured trainers are in now. For example a dress with white converses. (According to the morning shows!)

FeelingwearyFeeelingsmall · 05/06/2023 10:37

I was out with friends yesterday. All in our late 50s/early 60s. Everyone wore floral midi dresses with white trainers. I thought we looked great. As @SaxSick said - we looked bright and confident and happy.

We might well be cliches or fashion backward but we had a great time.

Softoprider · 05/06/2023 10:50

@Ffariee Seasalt have some lovely summer dresses with pockets I have couple and the pocket detail is the best part of them

Middle aged woman here. I love that look Vlad, it's very me, I'm not a midi dress wearer.
But op, at least the middle aged dress and trainers brigade are not wearing this current fashion, which seems to be favoured by the young

Noooo! She isn't really naked is she........????

I've switched over to wide leg jeans and cargo pants now but holding onto my skinny jeans because once y2k dies 2010s is apparently coming back in style. Can't wait!

CointreauVersial · 05/06/2023 13:33

The neutral/beige/cream look is supposed to make you appear more expensive and chic. But I never feel right in it.

TollgateDebs · 05/06/2023 13:52

Is the real question - do we believe those on Instagram etc., (so called Influencers) who are desperate to continue being paid for content and telling us what we should be wearing, so as to boost a manufacturer's profit and their earnings?

As for the Wall's sausage leg look, noooooooooooo!

especially the ribbed ones! OMG women travelling in planes in this and bending over. A horrible experience.

Wall's sausage look 🤣

Those leggings don't flatter anyone!

ZaZathecat · 05/06/2023 14:27

No @Criticalalert it's just a pair of harmless nude leggings that are partial to a bum crack

Fashion is fleeting - style is forever. You can buy the former easily, the latter comes within.

Lucky for all those who 'have it within'. Like a sort of magic. Give yourselves a big pat on the back.

How often on these threads do you see posts

I'm sad, I've been i'll, I've been a carer, I've been divorced, I've been bringing up kids, I've lost my mojo .... ( insert whatever here )
And I don't know what to wear .....?

Is that when we all pipe up

wear what you want!

Yeah that’s right - wear what you want. Enjoy it, feel confident in it, dress to suit your shape/lifestyle, whatever. If it offends you/frustrates you/infuriates you/whatever it is that seems to boil your bile on this then feel free to look away from the post.

Floisme · 05/06/2023 16:29

I may be wrong but I read sunglasses as saying that a lot of posters on this board don't know what they want any more, that nothing makes them feel confident because they've lost their way; and that they post on here hoping for advice or pointers or just to chat to other people who feel the same; and that for those kinds of posters, 'Wear what you want' is totally unhelpful.

SirChenjins · 05/06/2023 16:57

That wasn't my take on things, having read on their posts - but I could be wrong. On a thread about the fashion industry telling us what we should and shouldn't wear I actually think it's very helpful to say 'ignore them - they have clothes to sell, and it's in their interest to tell you what's in and what's not this season. Instead, wear what you want - whether you're someone who ignores trends and rocks their own style , or whether you just dress for the weather, if you feel good in something that's all that matters'.

Different if it was a thread about 'what should I buy to look like I'm from Paris' or something though.

Yep that's it.

SirChenjins · 05/06/2023 18:19

But that’s not the premise of this particular thread

Floisme · 05/06/2023 18:29

But is it really a thread about the fashion industry? Or is it a thread about other discussions on this board about the coming and the passing of trends, and whether it's even possible to hold such a discussion without offence?

SirChenjins · 05/06/2023 18:42

Probably not the fashion industry, although it does determine what’s in/out if you’re that way inclined - more about discussions on here about what we should and shouldn’t wear

*The OP is just posting /quoting what she's read on the fashion pages of the media.

No not the media, I was taking the piss out of recent threads on here*

Floisme · 05/06/2023 19:07

Yup that's what I thought. That's why I'm asking - not specially if you but if this thread in general - if it's possible to hold a discussion about trends on this board without offence?

Floisme · 05/06/2023 19:07

Soz, not specifically if you etc

Floisme · 05/06/2023 19:08

Aargh... not specifically of you etc etc
