Right so we should stop wearing...

...floral midi/maxi dress with white trainers because it’s ubiquitous, a ‘middle aged women’s summer uniform’ (can’t forget the cropped denim jacket)

Beige, cream, camels any neutrals because it’s dull and bland.

Skinny jeans are out, they are not trendy.

What else should we stop wearing?

If skinny jeans are out why are the shops full of them?

They aren't really in shops everywhere. There are slim leg but I haven't seen actual skinnies anywhere even remotely fashionable

Underwear?

Fashion is fleeting - style is forever. You can buy the former easily, the latter comes within.

Lucky for all those who 'have it within'. Like a sort of magic. Give yourselves a big pat on the back.

How often on these threads do you see posts

I'm sad, I've been i'll, I've been a carer, I've been divorced, I've been bringing up kids, I've lost my mojo .... ( insert whatever here )
And I don't know what to wear .....?

Is that when we all pipe up

wear what you want!

Highdaysandholidays1 · 04/06/2023 19:23

This is a very circular argument on S & B.

First, why come on S & B if you are not interested in what's stylish or beautiful? Or fashionable? Or interesting? Discussing trends is pretty standard stuff for a style board.

Second, the only reason usually people make these proclamations is that someone comes on and says I feel a bit unstylish or frumpy, I caught sight of myself in the reflection of a store window, what can I do? Then people try to help by suggesting things that are more fashion-forward, not things that are standard but have been around a while and probably going out shortly. I wouldn't suggest to someone they invest in Breton tops, but I think it's fine to wear them, especially if you already have them!

As for the floral dress thing, I honestly didn't know it was such a look, sure I've seen a few people out with this look but I don't have one floral dress at all, and never have done! I prefer separates, easier to style, I have a big tummy and they hide them and it's easier to mix and match.

People are wedded to their looks, in some ways that's eco-friendly to just keep wearing the same look, don't need to invest in much new to wear it, keep it going for years, I've worn some items for over a decade.

It is nice to have a refresh though, every now and again. Not if you don't want to and you like your 'look' but if you do think, I've been wearing this for ages, everyone else is wearing it too, I don't think it should be taboo to suggest that perhaps trying something a bit different might look fresher.

The dress/trainer looks great ..OP, wear whatever makes you feel happy and comfortable.

I followed a bunch of teenagers out of Wilkos yesterday and for goodness sakes, they were all quite curvy (putting it politely) but wearing tight shorts, cheeks on show, legs full of cellulite 😣yuk!

It's always the same.

Plus, it's not a badge of superiority to have no interest in style and fashion. Just a personal choice.

BTMadmummy · 04/06/2023 19:30

@JustToBeMe You will look amazing in your new jacket

Middersweekly · 04/06/2023 19:34

As a mother of young adults who skud around in the shortest shorts and crop tops in the summer, I think I will stick to my un-trendy maxi dresses/ tea dresses and flip flops, sandals or sliders (it’s too hot for trainers where I live). I wear what’s comfortable and couldn’t care less that I look middle aged because I am middle aged lol. On a side note I would probably be paid good money NOT to wear shorts shorts and my DC’s would be mortified!

@VladimirVsVolodymyr thanks for that link - I might buy that today, it’s lovely! (Am 53)

I literally went straight on and brought this! I am 45, think ill be able to wear this in loads of ways

notwavingbutdrowning1 · 04/06/2023 19:53

I think everyone should wear what they want, what suits and what they're comfortable in. You do not have to be dictated to by 'fashion.' Crack on.

BUT personally I'm really into fashion. It has been part of my career and I'm always interested. As many people are.

I'm not going to be ashamed of that. And I think it's perfectly valid to discuss it.

Exactly, @sunglassesonthetable. Unfortunately, there's a particular brand of British puritanism that dictates that you're not allowed to treat fashion as an enjoyable interest. Ditto with food. Woe betide anyone who takes an interest in trends or buys anything but the rock-bottom cheapest. (Spending on holidays/cars etc appears to be a different matter ...)

notwavingbutdrowning1 · 04/06/2023 20:02

I wear what's comfortable and couldn't care less.

That's great but it's not relevant. I have a garden and I couldn't care less about gardening. For that reason I don't even know if there are gardening threads on Mumsnet and if I did I would avoid them. Yet here are people who openly profess not to be interested in fashion/style yet posting on a fashion/style thread. Mainly to put those of us who are interested in our place, it seems.

As for the difference between fashion and style - yes, yes, but the two are linked and both require an interest in and knowledge of clothes.

FedUpWithEverything123 · 04/06/2023 20:20

I've reached an age where I've tried it all and I know what works for me and what I like - and that is what I shall wear! Skinny jeans, long dresses, trainers, whatever - surely if it looks good on you and feel confident it's all good, and what someone else decides is "in style" is entirely irrelevant to me!

nahwhale · 04/06/2023 20:21

Anything really

Abouttimemum · 04/06/2023 20:32

I’ve been wearing jeans, trainers and a hoody since 1995, I hope that’s ok 🤣

browneyes77 · 04/06/2023 20:34

Groutyonehereagain · 03/06/2023 10:03

If skinny jeans are out why are the shops full of them?

My thoughts entirely.

I still continue to buy them (because they suck in the fat thighs 😂).

I will also continue to buy whatever the hell I feel comfortable in.

Carpedimum · 04/06/2023 20:38

I will not be giving up the dress + trainers, or a denim/leather jacket look because I like it, and I’m pretty sure that the person who said it had to stop was the Head of Marketing at John Lewis or somewhere similar! They just want us to buy more stuff.

YukoandHiro · 04/06/2023 20:38

OMG can people stop posting about this, it's so tedious. Dress and trainers with a jacket suits a lot of people - if you like it wear it, if you think it's passé then don't.

RachaelN · 04/06/2023 21:54

I have two pairs of mom jeans.. I wear them for gardening etc because I think they are god awful 😂

KitchenSinkLlama · 04/06/2023 22:00

Why does anyone care about what someone else wears?

chubbychopsticks · 04/06/2023 23:39

Skinny jeans are making a comeback apparently!

Wear whatever you like.

Ffariee · 05/06/2023 07:44

I work at a university and it’s clear what the fashion choices are for young adults when walking around campus:
shorts - cycling shorts styles like we had in the 90s
wide leg trousers that drag on the floor at the back - like the ones we had in the 90s
midi tops that show your tummy off (not your belly button though as all trousers are high waisted- did we have those in the 90s too?)
chunky trainers and platform boots - like we had in the 90s
retro patterns on clothing and padded shirts - similar to those in the 90s surprisingly

I think there’s a theme here but I can’t be sure!

(tbh I’m just glad that I can wear comfy loose fitting trousers!)

and the dreary over sized grey tracksuit bottoms unless they are stored for Winter!

Ffariee · 05/06/2023 07:57

I’d like to add that I don’t think I’ve ever been fashionable and although I am 43, I don’t wear floral dress trainer combos because I don’t feel comfy in them, although I think they look lovely on others - I have a weird thing about needing pockets and I’m obsessed with flip-flops. My current wardrobe consists mostly of second hand fatface tops with denim shorts (wax jeans - fits so nice!) or wide leg jogging bottoms and primark vests (the pyjama not a pyjama look)
footwear will be flip flops until it gets to toe freezing temperatures
