Right so we should stop wearing...

...floral midi/maxi dress with white trainers because it’s ubiquitous, a ‘middle aged women’s summer uniform’ (can’t forget the cropped denim jacket)

Beige, cream, camels any neutrals because it’s dull and bland.

Skinny jeans are out, they are not trendy.

What else should we stop wearing?

What’s wrong with neutrals? Generally look classic and go with many other things.

what a load of nonsense and way to make people overthink their own taste…

agree with PP we should stop wearing anything that makes us feel uncomfortable.

@SirChenjins Nobody’s child

Thanks @Downsizeddumpling I didn’t know it was in M&S!

The floral dress thing is slightly puzzling for me.

There wouldn't be a year from around 1984 onwards where there wouldn't be photos of me in floral dresses. (Although not with a denim jacket or trainers)

I remember in the early 90s noticing that in our department apart from myself and one of the secretaries no one seemed to bother with summer dresses, let alone floral summer dresses, but just thought, well, they don't know what they're missing and carried on. Laura Ashley, Monsoon, Cath Kidston, LK Bennett, Liberty always had plenty of them. (Laura Ashley in my view got into difficulties because the quality of the clothes and materials fell drastically - not because there was a shortage of floral dress wearers)

My reaction to the explosion of floral dresses and "the best floral dresses" articles was ok, that's interesting "(and slightly annoying")

woodhill · 04/06/2023 14:08

There were loads of drop waist styles in the 80s after Brideshead and in the 90s bias cut 30 style tea dresses

I loved LA, such as shame but agree about the quality

Wellnowlookhere · 04/06/2023 14:43

I’ve worn converse since I was an 18 year old student and I’m now 46.
You will have to wrench them out of my cold, dead hands. Or feet.

Discussing whether or not a trend has peaked is not a personal slur on everyone who still likes that trend. If you think a poster has said something offensive then by all means take it up with that individual, but otherwise why not do what I do whenever a new thread starts on how to look expensive - take a quick look, decide it's not of interest and close it.

Totally, @Floisme

Also, all the defence of neutral colours on here - afaik they’re not even under attack. The last word I read on them was the Vogue website citing Rosie Huntingdon-Whitely as a good example of how to wear them.

Very little style advice is proscriptive these days.

DeliciouslyDecadent · 04/06/2023 15:35

I don't think it's stupid thread.

The OP is just posting /quoting what she's read on the fashion pages of the media.

I think that as long as what you like is on the shelves in shops, you buy what suits you and what you like.

It's only when they disappear that there is an issue.

I am old enough to recall when the only jeans were flares and the bigger the flare the more trendy you were. Straight trousers with tapered ankles were just about available, but at the time, skinnier jeans didn't exist.

Couldn't agree more.

So dull when these threads turn into endless

" well, I'll wear what I want! I don't care "

It actually feels like these bods really DO care more than most as they have taken it all so personally.

Moonshine60 · 04/06/2023 17:15

Jeepers, wear what you like and what you most feel comfortable and confident in. What's the problem?

Ladyfrog59 · 04/06/2023 17:35

I'll wear whatever i like i've never been one to follow fashion or trend's

angela99999 · 04/06/2023 17:47

MayBeee · 03/06/2023 10:08

Wear what you like , I don't judge people on their clothes.
If your asking what we don't wear ourselves ( personal choice ) I don't wear trainers , jeans , things with ripped / slashes in , cold shoulder cut outs , halter necks , jumpsuits , or high heels . Lol I sound as boring as fuck !

No, not boring and not chavvy. Sounds fine to me...

And never forget that the media are paid by ads for clothing, shoes, make-up etc. so it's in their interests to persuade us that what we have is out of date and we need to go out and spend more to buy what they are telling us is in this season.

You know what? I do care actually. I think its just awful that every decade or so a certain body type is "in" and anyone who doesnt have that body type is made to feel inferior (in the media at least) and fashion endorses that. Its only very recently we have seen models with different body shapes on the catwalk and in magazines. It promotes a really vile message to women that they cant wear this and they shouldnt wear that and they ought to look like this and shouldnt look like that etc Then, you have all these rules about what women over 40 should wear and how they should do their hair etc. I think we should push back against that trend and say fck it, I'll wear what suits me, regardless of what fashion dictates. Its something worth challenging in my opinion because it affects everyone.

Topazmumma · 04/06/2023 18:04

"What else should we stop wearing?"

The weight of other people's expectations 😆

IfYouDontLikeTheAnswerDontAskTheQuestion · 04/06/2023 18:04

I'm going to carry on wearing floral dresses - midi and maxi - with denim jackets and trainers. I'm not bothered about what anyone thinks, I like the look and I like to be comfortable.

Floisme · 04/06/2023 18:20

I think we should push back against that trend and say fck it, I'll wear what suits me, regardless of what fashion dictates.
And who decides what suits me? Why is it any better to listen to them?

cansu · 04/06/2023 18:23

Ignore it all. Wear what you like. I sometimes think this stuff is designed to make us feel shit.

sunglassesonthetable · 04/06/2023 18:29

Yep totally agree. wear what you want. Don't use fashion as any sort of dictate.

BUT on a thread actually discussing WHAT it is you might actually wear it's not helpful.

Just like on a recipe thread to say " eat what you want" when bods are discussing different ideas for meals.

What could I eat instead of pasta?
Eat what you want!

Jeannie88 · 04/06/2023 18:35

Don't care, have never followed fashion unless it's items and styles I like! We learn what suits our figures and what works for us so 🤷

Fashionotista · 04/06/2023 18:39

No not the media, I was taking the piss out of recent threads on here.

sunglassesonthetable · 04/06/2023 18:46

I think everyone should wear what they want, what suits and what they're comfortable in. You do not have to be dictated to by 'fashion.' Crack on.

BUT personally I'm really into fashion. It has been part of my career and I'm always interested. As many people are.

I'm not going to be ashamed of that. And I think it's perfectly valid to discuss it.

Clothes? Then you don't need to worry about what you are wearing.

ReformedWaywardTeen · 04/06/2023 19:01

I'm at an age now where I wear what I like. I gave up on fashion years ago, and I'm proud to say DD is 16 and doesn't follow it either.

Hear hear - well said.

Fashion is fleeting - style is forever. You can buy the former easily, the latter comes within.

Pearls53 · 04/06/2023 19:14

Hilarious! We don’t ‘stop wearing ‘ anything. Wear what you like, when you like .. & as for these so called experts preening about, telling us what 50+ should wear .. God it’s laughable
