Right so we should stop wearing...

...floral midi/maxi dress with white trainers because it’s ubiquitous, a ‘middle aged women’s summer uniform’ (can’t forget the cropped denim jacket)

Beige, cream, camels any neutrals because it’s dull and bland.

Skinny jeans are out, they are not trendy.

What else should we stop wearing?

Ooh show us yer dress @Fashionotista, even just a snap of the fabric. Orange is my new favourite colour.

Unfortunately my jacket stayed on 99% of the time. The sun only properly came out as I was leaving.

Right so we should stop wearing...

@Fashionotista and @SquirrelFan here you go: https://www.popsyclothing.co.uk/collections/womens-pump-shoes/products/dinosaur-print-canvas-pumps

I had been moaning to dh that all the cool stuff only comes in kid's sizes and then saw these. Fate I tell you Grin

Oooh that would go so well with my dress!

I'm firmly in the floral dress and trainer camp but at my age I suspect I am invisible to practically everyone so it doesn't matter what I wear.

What a sad thing to say. I bet I am older than you and I'm definitely not invisible!

SaxSick · 03/06/2023 21:37

I did read two hideous words above - Mary Janes ! What the heck are those shoes about?

Downsizeddumpling · 03/06/2023 21:43

Fashionotista · 03/06/2023 11:08

Nobody’s child
Abercrombie

If you like Nobody’s Child then I’d you have an M&S outlet near you then check it out as I was in there today and their were a number of Nobody’s Child dresses in the clearance section for £20.

SirChenjins · 03/06/2023 21:47

@Fashionotista love love love that dress! Where’s it from?

TheDogsMother · 03/06/2023 22:27

@SaxSick Not invisible in a sad way, definitely in a good way. I don't have all the anxieties of my 20s and 30s and DH says I'm definitely not invisible 🤣

YellowAndGreenToBeSeen · 03/06/2023 10:09

@VladimirVsVolodymyr thanks for that link - I might buy that today, it’s lovely! (Am 53)

That's great! My friend sent me the link when I told her I need to go clothes shopping. It is the complete opposite of me. I hope it suits you nicely ☺️

VladimirVsVolodymyr · 03/06/2023 23:34

@ZaZathecat that's great you like it, it is so far removed from my style (not that I have any 😂

Aslanplustwo · 03/06/2023 23:41

NewNovember · 03/06/2023 16:12

conversely it's very boring to still be wearing the same style for 15 years and not move with the times.

It might be boring to you, but what actually matters is how the person wearing it feels about it. Why should someone "move with the times" just for the sake of it if they don't like the clothes? Wearing something just because it is the current fashion IS boring, wearing the same clothes because you actually like them and they make you feel good is different.

Oh it's GORGEOUS

Why should someone "move with the times" just for the sake of it if they don't like the clothes?

But this is a thread for people who DO like to move with the times.

Um , I don't think it is. I think the OP was being sarcastic.

echt · 04/06/2023 02:14

Speaking of what we "should" be wearing, I've dyed my hair for yonks and missed the boat on a lockdown grow-out. Mentioning this, friend said I'd have to chuck out most of my clothes as they would be wrong. I googled the "advice" for those with grey hair. To be fair, more nuanced advice takes in skin tone but the general list is colours I'd rather poke my eyes out than wear.

Nope, nope, nopity nope, and it's not the cost.

On the floral dress and trainers front, I spotted early that it wasn't for me; the dress not the trainers. I still bought a midi floral dress about 2016. OMG - I looked like a Stepford wife - Bleurgh. It stayed in the wardrobe and by easy stages to the op shop. I should say that such styles have greatly improved, but they're still not me.

What matters really is that so many women have found a comfortable and flattering style. There's something for every body shape and the shoes don't cripple you.

The OP has stated that it is a lighthearted thread. Also the thread is in the Style and Beauty section - and as several have already mentioned, style and fashion are not the same thing.

Magicmama92 · 04/06/2023 06:58

What a stupid post. People can wear what they like.

Stravaig · 04/06/2023 07:45

@2bazookas @Maireas 😍🤣 Hankering for some Georgette Heyer now.

@Fashionotista Gorgeous! Envious, I'd look like a carrot.

@Tottenhamsucktoday That's a wonderful find. The prints! The shapes! The colours! The art!

Also struck by how spacious the world used to be, and how slim and fresh-faced and graceful people look.

Maybe we should all be watching archive footage to counteract our perceptual drift towards normalising obesity?

Now I fancy a 'share your floral dresses' thread. Or share all your dresses. Off to Advanced Search, it must've been done.

Summerishereagain · 04/06/2023 07:50

sherbertyellowteddy · 03/06/2023 10:08

My younger sister (in her 20s) said to me " skinny jeans are coming back in fashion by the way, so you'll be pleased"
Didn't realise they went out of fashion and hadn't stopped wearing them!

I'm also guilty of the summer dress with trainers. Normally I'd like summer dress with sandals, but pushing a buggy while rushing on the school run is only a job for trainers/pumps

To me that screams the fashion industry try to make them out of fashion but customers weren’t following.

Likewhatever · 04/06/2023 08:11

I’m eternally grateful for the midi dress/trainer combo and I won’t be giving it up in a hurry. Life’s too short to spend any of it in discomfort.

Custardonthehob · 04/06/2023 08:46

I was in a busy restaurant and then bars yesterday, and saw a mix of ages in their going out gear. Didn't really see floral midi/trainer combo. Was more midi and chunky flat sandals. In fact, lots of people in the chunky flat sandals. A few heels dotted around. What struck me was the diversity in outfits. Hair seem very samey though - all the same loose waves.

notwavingbutdrowning1 · 04/06/2023 09:07

Indeed. But it’s still a starting point for discussing what to wear and what’s in. If everyone just shouts ‘I can wear what I like’, it’s pretty pointless.

notwavingbutdrowning1 · 04/06/2023 09:08

And that was in reply to @NatashaDancing saying:

Um , I don't think it is. I think the OP was being sarcastic.

ChrisPPancake · 04/06/2023 09:38

That dress is gorgeous @Fashionotista 😍

With you, @SquirrelFan and @VoluptuaSneezelips I kind of wish I was on commission! Would describe myself as less of an influencer and more of an enabler though Wink

Wore my outfit out yesterday afternoon/evening. Felt great. Lovely night with dh. Got complimented by a complete stranger on my oh so grown up handbag too Grin

But what’s “in” is not always stylish as we all know - and it’s far from pointless if an incredibly stylish person wears what they want to.

Floisme · 04/06/2023 12:05

Yes of course there's more to this board than fashion but for most of us, the way we dress is influenced by it. Some of us enjoy talking about trends and how they come and go and come back around again, just like other posters might like talking about handbags or new skincare products.

Discussing whether or not a trend has peaked is not a personal slur on everyone who still likes that trend. If you think a poster has said something offensive then by all means take it up with that individual, but otherwise why not do what I do whenever a new thread starts on how to look expensive - take a quick look, decide it's not of interest and close it.
