Are these shoes appropriate for work?

Following on from another thread, I have bought some summer work dresses. I never usually go bare legged to work, I’m always either in tights with a dress or trousers. This summer I’ve decided to ditch the tights as the office is so hot. The problem is, deciding what shoes to wear.

I work in a professional role where I am required to wear business dress. It is very male dominated so not many women to take the lead from style wise!

Would these shoes be ok for the workplace? If not, could you please link appropriate shoes? Side note - I always have a pedicure, no cracked heels etc.

They’re lovely but might they cut in across the toes if you wear them all day? (BTW, I wear trainers to work with summer dresses!)

peacelemon · 29/05/2023 13:49

No, always wear closed toes in the office.

peachgreen · 29/05/2023 13:51

It depends on the office to be honest, but when I worked in a more formal environment that required business dress, open-toed shoes wouldn’t have been appropriate unfortunately.

wildfirewonder · 29/05/2023 13:54

Agree with others, if you have a dress code of 'professional business' then you need closed toe.

That said, I'd probably wear them if not customer facing.

Thanks all, could anyone recommend a type of shoe that could be worn with a dress like this? Ideally no heel or very low heel.

I’m not office based all of the time, I go in and out of police stations, people’s homes, schools a couple days a week.

It’s much easier for men who can just shove on a suit! Although very warm for them in this weather

Agree closed toe is more suited to a professional role.

Doggymummar · 29/05/2023 13:57

I would ask HR, our dress code says no open toes or slingbacks

BaronessBomburst · 29/05/2023 14:08

I wear a closed-toe flat/ pump/ court shoe in a colour similar to my skin tone. I wear blush in the late spring and tan or light cognac later in the year. Black shoes and bare legs will look terrible if you're light skinned. If you're dark skinned then you can wear any colour and it will work.

Yes agreed, closed toe low-heel court shoe in a light colour would be great.

Niftythrifter · 29/05/2023 14:12

Would espadrilles be an option?

Hairbrushhandle · 29/05/2023 14:13

You need closed toe. Look for closed toe sandals or ballet pumps. Moshulu are good.

CeliaNorth · 29/05/2023 14:14

if you're in and out of police stations etc, I should think you need closed in, not flimsy, shoes for H&S reasons.

Tartanpink · 29/05/2023 14:16

Thanks, closed toe it is!

I’m going to give these a go. I agree that the black against my pale skin may look silly, so will also look at a nude or tan option

At work we have to send an email round re appropriate attire as standards slip as it gets warm, included on that is no open toed shoes/ sandals, they say due to h&s but it's just standard offices, I think it's to stop people coming in flip flops to be honest so where I work those would be a no

RaininSummer · 29/05/2023 15:00

I would wear them on my office.

JinglingSpringbells · 29/05/2023 15:18

Ballet pumps or low heeled court shoes.

Niftythrifter · 29/05/2023 14:12

Would espadrilles be an option?

For a beach?
Not professional wear or even smart casual

JinglingSpringbells · 29/05/2023 15:19

T-bar style pumps (a bit Mary Jane ) are back in fashion.

BackT · 29/05/2023 15:23

Loafers or pumps are probably the easiest.

M and S have a decent selection

Niftythrifter · 29/05/2023 14:12

Would espadrilles be an option?

No, not in a work environment. They're casual summer wear for the garden/beach/holidays etc.

LoobyDop · 29/05/2023 16:16

You can get away with peep toes, imo, but not styles like that where all of them are out flaunting their nakedness. I have a pair of M&S leather ballet pumps that are a kind of basket weave, so although they’re fully enclosed they are quite cool in very hot weather.

Augend23 · 29/05/2023 16:22

I would just Google "closed toe sandals" - my friend had a gorgeous yellow pair that were half way between a brogue and a sandal (bad description, they were lovely!)

snowgirl1 · 29/05/2023 17:24

I'm go to go against the grain and say I think they are suitable. I work in a formal business environment and wouldn't bat an eyelid at someone wearing the sandals in the OP.
