Are these shoes appropriate for work?

Following on from another thread, I have bought some summer work dresses. I never usually go bare legged to work, I’m always either in tights with a dress or trousers. This summer I’ve decided to ditch the tights as the office is so hot. The problem is, deciding what shoes to wear.

I work in a professional role where I am required to wear business dress. It is very male dominated so not many women to take the lead from style wise!

Would these shoes be ok for the workplace? If not, could you please link appropriate shoes? Side note - I always have a pedicure, no cracked heels etc.

@BaronessBomburst I love the t-bar ones you posted, where are they from?

coxesorangepippin · 30/05/2023 12:34

I love that dress in the original op 😍

Pinkywoo · 30/05/2023 12:48

Thank you!

I think it really depends on the environment - sorry, that's so vague! I work in a 'formal' environment in that it's a law firm, and whilst on the one hand post Covid in particular dress is definitely less formal than it used to be, I don't think I've noticed people with sandals and I've never worn an open toe, but at the same time I can totally wear trainers (and indeed do, with summer dresses) - arguably those sandals are 'smarter' but I just think open toe doesn't feel quite right. However I went on secondment to a client which was a bank, and lots of women wore sandals and even leather sliders which are felt seems even more casual, yet that seemed completely normal there. Hence my it depends v much on the specific workplace I think.

An alternative is a pair of v light soft leather loafers - I have a pair in a muted silver leather, now on the hunt for a pair in a muted gold or blush, as think they go with most things in summer dresses or trousers, and less harsh against pail skin

Well, I bit the bullet and wore them today! With a different dress from in the picture.

I didn’t get sacked, nobody recoiled in horror at the sight of a toe in the work place and I have been nice and cool and comfortable all day.

I have bought closed toe sling backs which I will alternate between

I love the t bar courts from bon prix. I must buy some. I have a pair of jazz shoes exactly the same, but with a bendy, elastic split in the arch.

SorrowsPrayers · 30/05/2023 15:37

@Tartanpink please can you tell me where I can buy the dress?

LostInSpaceRaiders · 30/05/2023 16:25

In the type of environments you describe as your workplace, no, I wouldn't say they are appropriate.

I work on industrial/manufacturing sites mostly, and I wear my summer dresses with tights and Dr Martens (yes I'm that person!), casual chunky trainers like Adidas Courts/Stan Smiths/Gazelles type, or with driving shoes / soft loafers. If it's absolutely roasting I might take a pair of sandals in with me to wear in my office only though. I probably wouldn't wear anything with a stiletto type heel, an instable heel or anything liable to get damaged easily when going into Police Stations and peoples homes as you need something on your feet that are secure, that will stay on your feet in the event of emergency, and that will protect your feet from anything minging on the floor or an errant stamp on the foot (I speak from experience of working in the Forensic Sector 😬).

Tartanpink Many thanks, it's lovely!

CottonSock · 30/05/2023 16:46

They are fine and so are ballet flats.

bonfirebash · 30/05/2023 21:38

I wish we could wear open toes! Some dresses look loads better with flat sandals in summer, but no. Our dress code is no open toes, and we aren't even customer facing
I tried getting away with the palmaira sandals and they weren't allowed either

Fuckitydoodah · 31/05/2023 09:12

I'd wear those to the office. I like them.

I think the whole closed toe thing is out of date. Like when women couldn't have bare legs in the workplace. As long as you've made your feet presentable (no crusty skin or gnarly nails), then I really don't see an issue.

Mikimoto · 30/05/2023 07:41

They're fine for work, if your job is strolling up and down Hollywood Boulevard looking for Hugh Grant in a car.

Oh my god, yep, those sandals absolutely shout 'hooker'. I've got some similar with a bit of leopard print on. I'm going to chuck them in the bin before men in the village accost me for sexual acts.

Ohfgsjon · 31/05/2023 09:33

Seeing a colleagues toes feels weirdly intimate. I just don't want to know what my Ops Directors toes look like thanks.

The sandals in the OP's first post?

If so, this is one of the maddest posts I've seen in a while.

bundle · 01/06/2023 11:08

I seriously can't see what the issue is here - what's the worst thing that can happen if you wear "inappropriate" shoes at work (I assume it's men who decide what is/isn't ok)?

ActDottie · 01/06/2023 11:12

Depends on the office no one would even notice in my office but we have zero dress code

snowgirl1 · 29/05/2023 17:24

I'm go to go against the grain and say I think they are suitable. I work in a formal business environment and wouldn't bat an eyelid at someone wearing the sandals in the OP.

Office culture dependent. Our management accountant (definitely professional) wears open toed sandals and mini skirts all summer.

Can't say I'd know what hooker wear is but clearly that poster does. I bow to her superior knowledge of sleazewear.

MooMooSharoo · 01/06/2023 11:33

I just wear flat black ballet pumps. Goes with pretty much every one of my work outfits, from summer dresses, business dresses, suits or black skinny jeans.

If it's super hot in the summer I might wear sandals, but ones that are secured rather than ones that make that annoying flip flop noise.

I'm wearing a summer dress today, bare legs, ballet pumps (and a jumper because it was surprisingly chilly when I left the house!)

I have recently realised how pasty my legs are though, so I have also started using the Nivea gradual tan moisturiser to not dazzle all my colleagues!

Wexone · 01/06/2023 11:36

No probs in my work. We have a smart casual policy. I would wear them no issues and think they are fab. I think flip flops are a no no though too casual.

Wexone · 01/06/2023 11:43

@TartanpinK Where you get these shoes ?
