Are these shoes appropriate for work?

Following on from another thread, I have bought some summer work dresses. I never usually go bare legged to work, I’m always either in tights with a dress or trousers. This summer I’ve decided to ditch the tights as the office is so hot. The problem is, deciding what shoes to wear.

I work in a professional role where I am required to wear business dress. It is very male dominated so not many women to take the lead from style wise!

Would these shoes be ok for the workplace? If not, could you please link appropriate shoes? Side note - I always have a pedicure, no cracked heels etc.

I work in a not formal office settings - in winter I wear DMs. I would not feel comfortable getting my toes out in the office and would find it strange if others did too. The nude M& S pumps would work well. Or some closed toe clog sandals?

OMG12 · 01/06/2023 23:00

Blimey, didn’t realise such dress codes still existed in offices.

Oh wow! How did you discover this? I’m intrigued!

Noticing him looking at my feet then seeing the erection.

And then clocked he was looking at all the ladies feet in sandals 🤮

BungleandGeorge · 01/06/2023 23:09

neither The dress nor the sandals are my idea of ‘business dress’. If the dress is not too casual I guess you’d be ok with the sandals. It might be a H&S issue when you’re out of the office though. People might wear sandals but they’re not really particularly smart, you can get away with it when it’s hot but it’s not really at the moment

Thank chuff I work in academia and nobody gives a flying fuck. Birkies all the way. Love working in the middle of nowhere and having a parking space 😊

RampantIvy · 01/06/2023 23:54

or that women’s feet are sexualised (which I agree that they are)

Really? That's just weird.

I'm staggered at how stuffy some workplaces are about footwear.

Sadly, it just isn't sandal weather here Sad
We had 13 degrees and cloud here today.

Thanks, closed toe it is!

I’m going to give these a go. I agree that the black against my pale skin may look silly, so will also look at a nude or tan option

OP, I have a version of these ASOS sling backs and they are murderously uncomfortable, some of the worse shoes I have ever owned

letmedoittoo · 02/06/2023 03:22

What about some loafers

"It’s much easier for men who can just shove on a suit! Although very warm for them in this weather"

Then buy a suit! Why not? Got that advice from a male colleague when I started work eons ago. Never worried about such matters since. It's like a uniform.

I read an article a while back that backed this idea. It said Mark Zuckerberg and an American Football coach(Jim Harbaugh GIYF) would always wear the exact same clothes to work, day in day out. The reason was simple. It's one less decision you have to make/worry about. It also means such questions are kicked to touch.

I have sent them back, they were SO uncomfy and pinched my toes together.

@Johannalaw I do often wear suits to work however with the weather being over 20 degrees at the minute it feels too hot so a dress without tights is cooler for me. I don’t think it feels quite as smart as a suit though

These are perfect for you, I worked in a formal environment for years, as long as sandals had a strap on and were safe to walk in they were fine, so would a smart pair of white lace up pumps. I would be happy to see my solicitor, doctor, teacher etc in the sandals or a pair of pumps. Comfort is the important thing, a nice pair of pumps look elegant with a summer dress IMO

StripeyDeckchair · 02/06/2023 09:33

Those saddles are fine.
Open toes are fine.
Flip flop style sandles are not ok (H&S)

The closed toes for office work is archaic

MrsDanversGlidesAgain · 02/06/2023 09:44

The closed toes for office work is archaic

Reminds me of banking in the 70s. No trousers for women, and however cold you are you can't put a cardigan on while customers are in the bank (even though I wasn't serving customers, just sitting in an office where they could see me). Even dark tights were morally dubious.

MysteryBelle · 02/06/2023 14:52

Closed toe is more appropriate in a more formal setting and also for your situation, op, where you go into police stations. It is just more professional.

No need to display your toes at work. Not because it’s showing too much or anything like that. It’s just not professional.

mujerofmine · 02/06/2023 15:20

Even dark tights were morally dubious.

I remember wondering about that. We were allowed flesh-coloured only.

pillsthrillsandbellyache · 02/06/2023 17:40

I dont know the dress code for your office but I used to wear these. Had them in tan too. Was a relaxed dress code though. They went with anything but mainly wore them for the comfort.

Cute 70s vibe!

pillsthrillsandbellyache · 02/06/2023 17:42

I've come to realise I have a really weird taste in shoes.

Ffion21 · 02/06/2023 18:39

I’m work in a formal environment and also work with professional customers (business to business, not consumer). The sandals are fine if paired with a smart outfit. Also we all tend to wear dresses with smart white trainers. That tends to be the fashion London way where I head to work too.

SybilWrites · 02/06/2023 20:16

In my City law firm in the 90s, open toe sandals weren't allowed - in fact I never saw them in the 2000s either. It's probably ok now, but I still wouldn't wear them for formal external meetings. I have meetings with some very senior women and I don't see them wearing sandals ever. In fact many of them are still in pencil skirts and nude tights.....

I'd wear them to my office these days as there's no dress code. In fact I like them! Where are they from @Tartanpink ?

Jem123456789 · 02/06/2023 20:47

Absolutely fine if you are allowed. If you have to wear closed toe shoes then something like this would be good.

What about something like these? Probably technically a sandal but more coverage than the original pair

No, always wear closed toes in the office.

Where do you work, 1930?
