Are these shoes appropriate for work?

Following on from another thread, I have bought some summer work dresses. I never usually go bare legged to work, I’m always either in tights with a dress or trousers. This summer I’ve decided to ditch the tights as the office is so hot. The problem is, deciding what shoes to wear.

I work in a professional role where I am required to wear business dress. It is very male dominated so not many women to take the lead from style wise!

Would these shoes be ok for the workplace? If not, could you please link appropriate shoes? Side note - I always have a pedicure, no cracked heels etc.

All jobs I have had with a business casual dress code have always said no to open toed shoes.

Clementineorsatsuma · 29/05/2023 19:52

People wear bloody flip flops at my work. Drives me crazy!

It is tough to find a good professional summer work shoe and I think sling backs like you have found are perfect!

RampantIvy · 29/05/2023 19:55

I have never worked anywhere where you couldn't wear sandals in the summer.

And where is it scorching this week? Our forecast is 16/17 every day.

Takenoprisoner · 29/05/2023 20:00

I love the second pair you linked in tan. I wonder if there are cheaper versions of these?

TinyTopknot · 29/05/2023 20:01

I don't like feet and prefer not to see people's manky feet in the office so I would say no to those for work.

Tartanpink · 29/05/2023 20:04

It’s to be 20-25 degrees where I am this week, hence braving ditching the tights.

It seems there is a very mixed opinion on this. I think some dress codes state no open toes for health and safety reasons. My dress code doesn’t make mention of closed toe shoes.

I’ve ordered some closed toe sling backs which will arrive tomorrow but I think I’ll give these ones a go any way…

I find office-based (not labs or warehouses etc) dress codes that say "no open toes for health & safety reasons" sexist. Because the dress codes don't generally say "no high heels/stilettos" and they are as much of a h&s issue. Those companies are quite happy for women to risk spraining their ankle as long as they look feminine. I would have less on an issue if the dress code said "no open toes as it's not the professional image we want to project".

Thanks, closed toe it is!

I’m going to give these a go. I agree that the black against my pale skin may look silly, so will also look at a nude or tan option

I had a similar dilemma and also bought these and I think they look absolutely fine with my trouser suit!

I'm go to go against the grain and say I think they are suitable. I work in a formal business environment and wouldn't bat an eyelid at someone wearing the sandals in the OP.

Oh thank goodness! I was beginning to think I had stumbled on a MN thread from a century ago. What is so "unprofessional" about open-toe sandals?

Nothing – but unfortunately a lot of workplaces don’t seem to agree!

It's to be in the 20s in my area of Scotland this week. My washing will be getting caught up on for once as I can hang it out

und · 29/05/2023 21:46

Newspaper says hottest day of the year mid week, but it's only around 19 here.

WombatChocolate · 29/05/2023 22:06

Those black sandals are certainly what could be considered smart sandals. They aren’t close to being flip flops or very casual.

Work places differ about what is the norm and if the6 have a specific dress code.

Most workplaces are more casual now than previously - many men do t ever wear ties, even when meeting clients. Women typically don’t wear skirt suits but dresses are far more common. Comfort is more acceptable and seen as a positive.

Hot offices and the need to wear tights or closed shoes seems a bad idea….means hot, sweaty and possibly smelly people. The trouble is, some people will dress as if they’re going to the beach. A works clothing policy isn’t a bad thing and in most cases doesn’t need to be too prescriptive.

No, always wear closed toes in the office.

I've worked in various offices over the last 20 years and never crossed my mind that I shouldn't be wearing open toed. Worked for various professional finback's services organisations, always with an element of client facing:

I thought that was an old fashioned "rule"?

I've worked all my working life in private practice, non legal aid law firms. I've never come across any office where women couldn't wear sandals in summer.

So they should be hidden in work but not bars, restaurants, supermarkets, shopping malls, drs offices, dentists?

Why is it different seeing them in the office as opposed to day to day life?

In 30 plus years of working in private practice law firms I've never heard of any such rule. Labs, warehouses are obviously different.

Astrabees · 29/05/2023 22:26

I have worked in several professional office jobs, when I was a solicitor I was also in and out of police stations. I always wore open toed sandals with smart clothes, sometimes with high ish heels, as did my colleagues. I’m not sure why there should be a health and safety issue in police stations, for someone visiting.

holliebo · 29/05/2023 22:27

LoobyDop · 29/05/2023 16:16

You can get away with peep toes, imo, but not styles like that where all of them are out flaunting their nakedness. I have a pair of M&S leather ballet pumps that are a kind of basket weave, so although they’re fully enclosed they are quite cool in very hot weather.

All out flaunting their nakedness??! This made me laugh!!!

It's feet we're talking about right? Not boobs or dicks 😂

Maybe it's self enforcing. But yeah like no office I've worked in would have toes out on show or if they were it would be rare and the feet would stink

GandTtwice · 29/05/2023 22:52

Hi OP
Can I ask where the original sandals are from please. I'm looking for some new sandals for work. I work in an office based job and these would definitely be acceptable

RampantIvy · 29/05/2023 23:08

Why would the feet drink in sandals @peacelemon? Surely feet would sweat more in closed shoes?

Why is it assumed that no-one looks after their feet by many posters? I always make sure my feet are clean and smooth before I inflict them on the public. I have pedicures in summer so they look their best.

RampantIvy · 29/05/2023 23:09

Stink in sandals!
I switched auto correct off on my kindle but it still corrects my words.

What rubbish! It's very common for people to wear open toe sandals here, and I've never smelt anyone's feet.
