It’s another sandals one

Trying to search for some chunky sandals that fit in with current trends but also don’t make me look like I’m trying to be young (only in my 40s but work with young people so I don’t want anything too like the DM flatforms that are super trendy). What do you think of these? in black

I’m lurking as my beloved turquoise Birkenstocks finally gave up the ghost last summer.

I did buy the attached clog sandals in black last year and they were extraordinarily comfy. I managed to walk all around Berlin with no problems at all. Not even any issues when new <remembers blister upon blister when Birkenstocks were new>

I don’t think that style is available anymore, unless you’re a size 3 and want it in tan, but I can certainly recommend Raid sandals.

I’m 47 and brought the dm sandals last year after debating for a couple of years. Wish I had got them sooner.
I got the ones with the cords over front straps as they were more comfortable for me.
The voss 11 also liked that they didn’t have the big tag.

I'm 52. I have the DMs. Clearly I have no shame.

LadyRoughDiamond · 25/05/2023 20:11

I’m 48 and practically lived in these last summer for work. My twenty-something colleague had the same pair - we both agreed they were like walking on air!

I’m 50 and have Dr Marten sandals and winter boots. I’ve worn docs for years, got my first pair aged 21 and I’m not going to stop wearing them anytime soon. If you like the sandals buy them.

Jkrowlingsarmy · 25/05/2023 21:13

Try whistles Noah sandals or mint velvet Jamie black sandals. Gabor is for old women. Don’t do it.

I have the Dune Locations, they are so comfortable and go with everything...., 20% off at the moment too

www.dunelondon.com/location-padded-flatform-sandals-black-0079511060001484.html

Love those ones @Rina66 but I can't see anything about them being 20% off. Am I missing something?

PyongyangKipperbang · 25/05/2023 21:55

As an almost 50 year old who has been wearing DM's since her teens, wear the damn Docs!

Young people dont get to gate keep stuff that we have been wearing for years. I have Docs older than my kids (eldest is 32!) so anyone who thinks that we are "trying too hard" in them can fuck right off!

If nothing else, it proves that our generation were not in fact the feckless disposable generation that some young people would say, we bought stuff that LASTED! That said.....I think that the quality now isnt as good as it used to be.

Flockameanie · 25/05/2023 22:35

Thanks @Rina66

almostoverthehill · 25/05/2023 23:20

I’m eyeing up the DM sandals this year especially as I can get a few years wear out of them and they are so versatile. By the way I’m almost 50!

TruthRevolution · 26/05/2023 06:25

I'm 43 and have several pairs of DM's, boots, shoes and sandals.

My Mil (74) Has DM sandals and so does my niece (25)

Mummyoflittledragon · 26/05/2023 06:32

Thank you. They’re lovely.

I also like the DMs op. Am in my 50s. I had a pair of DMs in the 80s.

Rina66 · 26/05/2023 06:43

The Dune Locations are so light as well @Mummyoflittledragon (a pound off of your foot equals five off of your back!) and the back strap is elasticated leather, so you aren't having to bend down in the heat to fiddle a little hole to put the prong bit in on a buckle.

DejaVoodoo · 26/05/2023 08:14

I have DM sandals, "Blaire" style. So does my mum. I am 54 and my mum is 75. I hate the idea that someone ought not to wear something because they're a certain age. Silly.

Anyway, I also have some chunky DM-alike Schuh sandals (they have lots of nice ones... own make are very reasonably priced) and a pair of Birkenstocks, so my summer feet are sorted.

Grimbelina · 26/05/2023 09:37

Please don't not buy the DMs because you think you shouldn't! Buy whatever you want/can afford. Love seeing someone in their 50's/60's/70's/80's really enjoying their clothes and shoes.

oliveandwell · 26/05/2023 09:45

The Clarks Orianna are excellent.

Clarks is just the best when it comes to grown up versions of 'trendy'.

CentrifugalBumblePuppy · 26/05/2023 11:20

50 here & I’m another vote for ‘Do the Doc sandals’!

People who judge us older folks for what we wear (or dressing younger than our age, whatever that means) is a git.

I find those who judge us oldies on our hair or clothes or shoes has nothing better to fill their brains or lives with. Imagine being that vacuous!

Been in Docs of various kinds since my teens (vital working in the theatre as a tech, standing all day in the classroom as a teacher, travelling around the world as a chaperone & on location, even when beautifully dressed in long dresses & skirt in next life in and out of an office).

Ditto Converse (heck, wore my fave black Chucks at my wedding).

I even keep my crutches at a longer height to
adjust for the Doc sole.

And of course, I match my Chucks to my walking sticks.

Do the Docs!

I love these sorts of threads! I have very narrow feet so can't wear anything where the bit over the toes can't adjust down a lot (as well as adjustable back strap). Has anyone got any comfy recommendations on that front? Must be leather because I can't bear the stench of my feet in synthetics.

To add - DMs are fab and I wish I could but even the adjustable ones are way to wide still for me. I don't want anything without a really, really nice cushioned base because of my plantar fasciitis.

Young woman: “Am I too told to wear these ugly grandma sandals?”

Posters: “Of course not, here’s some more ugly grandma sandals!”

Instead of swallowing every spoonful the powers that be tell you is true, current, or “in”, look with your eyes and see how UGLY and unflattering ALL these shoes are. All these threads on always dated chunky hiking sandals that make your feet look like giant flat caveman feet, they’re like unintentional tragicomedy.

What in hades is this monstrosity?
