I hope you don't mind me jumping on this thread - I was wondering if anyone on this thread might know where Kate's jeans/trousers that she wore today at the Big Help Out were from? Appreciate they aren't very glam but I can't find any hints elsewhere!

They're G-Star skinny cargos.

Someaddedsugar · 08/05/2023 20:23

Thank you @KillingMeDeftly 😊

I am genuinely now thinking the wearing of the Garter/RVO robes was a late decision to avoid any repeat of the “who gets to wear uniform” controversy at the Queen’s funeral. Clearly Sophie’s dress was designed so all the details around the bodice would be visible. Kate had a v-neckline and she was lent a big gun necklace from QEII’s personal collection. This makes no sense if they knew when they commissioned them that the main features of the dresses would be entirely covered.

But everyone in the higher ranks of the family bar Tim and Harry have a rank in an order that comes with a fancy robe. We are used to seeing Tim in uniform as he was for decades a serving officer. Andrew was barely shown on tv. Harry wore the RVO insignia that he is entitled to wear around his neck. Controversy avoided and no-one can realistically complain that they were treated unfairly (Harry would certainly have been promoted to a higher rank of the RVO by now had he stayed, but he’s still got a rank in the order, just not the top one).

I'm inclined to agree - I think if they'd been planning the robes all along the dresses would have been different, more detail at the bottom maybe?

I wonder if this was one of the many issues which required discussion and compromise to get Harry to attend? The uniforms were obviously a very sore point on previous occasions

That’s a good point, and seems quite plausible. I think Kate’s dress also had quite a bit of symbolism in the embroidery didn’t it? With national flowers all included? You’d think that had been designed to be seen.

Spudlet · 08/05/2023 20:49

If that is the case (and obviously we’re just speculating), on the one hand I can see why Harry would be upset about wearing uniform, given how huge a part of his life his army service was (although he knows the rules etc). But on the other hand - damn me but I’d be pissed off if I’d spent AGES on getting the dress just right, then had to plonk some garish (sorry, but they were a bit, although Kate and Sophie did carry them off well) bloody cloak over the top of all those beautiful details…

Ah, thanks @Maireas
Slightly surprised to see the Gloucesters and Kents on there with all the talk of the slimmed down monarchy.
Andrew must be fuming to be the only one of the siblings left out.

Another reason for including the Kent siblings and the Duke of Gloucester is that all three were in QEII’s official coronation portrait too back in 1953 - they were her first cousins and later they (and Brigitte Gloucester after her wedding) became working royals too. It’s a nice way to mark both the passage of time and their decades supporting the Monarch.

(Princess Alexandra is on the far left, Prince Richard of Gloucester far right and the Duke of Kent in the back row next to Prince Phillip)

Indeed. Andrew Parker Bowles was at that Coronation, too!

Thanks for the insight into the Gloucesters and the Kents being in the photo. That makes sense.
As an aside...I know everyone goes on about Major Johnny, and he is admittedly a handsome guy, but I have to admit King Felipe makes my heart flutter. 😘

paradyning · 08/05/2023 21:24

@Serenster is that Princess Mary 4th from the right?

Serenster · 08/05/2023 21:26

Yes! The Princess Royal at the time, and QEII’s aunt.

Serenster · 08/05/2023 21:30

And just to note that controversy about who’s in and who’s out is nothing new, QEII’s “family” portrait of course didn’t include her remaining living uncle, Edward VIII….

Maireas · 08/05/2023 21:34

.... although he tried to get invited, and badgered the government of the time!

I know everyone goes on about Major Johnny

Isn't he Lt. Colonel Johnny now? That's how he's listed in the Order of Service.

Maireas · 08/05/2023 21:47

He's braw.

KillingMeDeftly · 08/05/2023 21:59

Anyone know why the Gloucester boys and PMoK are wearing kilts? Is it a nod to HMQ's Scottish heritage?

gluenotsoup · 08/05/2023 22:03

He’s also back in my airing cupboard. I only let him out for the day.

TheIsaacs · 08/05/2023 22:03

So do people think POW was wearing some sort of cape over her gown that hid the neckline and necklace? Or did she change her gown for the official portraits?

justasking111 · 08/05/2023 22:10

Did the king have a bit of a do in Buckingham palace after the coronation or was it just an intimate family lunch does anyone know?

Maireas · 08/05/2023 22:12

Good question, there was a shot of a load of cars going in. Maybe family and select VIPs? I hear the Archbishop of Canterbury always gets invited - he's got a good gig.

That's my best guess - the bottom of the dress and the sleeve detail looks the same but there is definitely a different neckline. a capelet seems the most likely especially given Charlotte's outfit. The alternative is a duplicate dress but I'm not sure why they'd bother just for the photo.

Oddly I read that she was wearing the festoon necklace somewhere before the newer photos were released so the palace must have released that info.

Premiumbondbaby · 08/05/2023 22:45

I think the media get the details of the outfits ahead of time but the information is embargoed until the RF appear in public.

I read in several places BBC website etc. that the POW was wearing the festoon necklace.

I agree the two necklines are different but both had detailed embroidery. I hope at some point we get to see both in more detail.

justasking111 · 08/05/2023 23:38

Apparently the hems of the dresses got very wet and heavy. My wedding dress was mucky at the bottom after the photographer had us standing on grass outside the church

BeaLola · 08/05/2023 23:41

Perhaps the festoon necklace didn't fit correctly under the robes and they took it off for the Abbey ? Those diamonds look heavy ..

bizzey · 09/05/2023 00:47

I am being very naughty and jumping right to the end of the thread and not read the other 5 pages beforehand to ask this.....

But....Sophie's dress had a big crease in the middle of it !

It was obviously a sit down crease sort of thing ...but ...don't they use material that would not show those sort of creases ?

TracyBeakerSoYeah · 09/05/2023 00:55

Checking in & thanks @Maireas
