Which top?

Friend's 50th birthday. DH doesn't like one because it's too grannyish and MIL says that one is better (but then, she is a granny!)
Which is better? I prefer one over the other, but my fashion sense is questionable

Black jeans and probably a dark blue (or black?) cardigan with it

You're size 8-10 and want to cover up in shapeless shirts? If I was your size I'd be showing it off.

Mojoj · 22/04/2023 16:34

Neither. They look really frumpy.

Slitheringheights · 22/04/2023 16:36

I will admit, my clothes can be a bit frumpy at times, but I wouldn’t pick any of these tops either. Sorry 😣

ColdAsAWitchsTit · 22/04/2023 16:36

OldGrannyish · 22/04/2023 16:33

All those latest tops you posted are the same style as the first two. are they? I was trying to look for different things like pp's have said. So not a plain colour then? That's bad with black jeans?

It's the bright colours you need to avoid if you're wearing black jeans. If you want to wear bright colours abandon the jeans and get a dress.

LlamaTwirl · 22/04/2023 16:40

I'd go with the top linked by TeamSleep

getafringenotbotox · 22/04/2023 16:42

Did I read you are a 8-10? Wear something fabulous!

Blazer and a loose cami with your jeans will look lovely on you. Anything would!

Bunce1 · 22/04/2023 16:42

White t shirt- ARKET have the nicest ones or and other stories. Wear with black jeans, chunky DM style boots, and a blazer. The brown linked above is really nice. Then a couple of layered gold necklaces.

You’re 42, I get that maybe clothes are of no interest to you- but I wonder if you’ll feel out of place at the party if you don’t look the part. IYSWIM

getafringenotbotox · 22/04/2023 16:43

Like this but whatever colour suits you

Have a look in Zara. Some beautiful blouses in bright colours.....
Your choices are incredibly frumpy.... I'm
60 and no way José would I been seen in the two tops you chose!

But then I wouldn't wear jeans to a friend's 50th either! I have one pair of jeans that hardly see the light of day

Rainraingoaway21 · 22/04/2023 16:44

If you're wearing black jeans OP a top in a nice neutral colour would work, with maybe a blazer or leather jacket for warmth.

Versatile to wear with other things in the future then. I think pp's are saying not to wear a bright colour top with the black jeans. I'd avoid patterns regardless to avoid potential frumpiness.

Newnamenewname109870 · 22/04/2023 16:44

Please please wear something much nicer! Forget all this trying to hide your body or whatever. Wear nice clothes, anyone can wear nice clothes!

Rainraingoaway21 · 22/04/2023 16:45

A dress would be best as it's an outfit sorted! Could you look at dresses?

Agreed! You can wear any young fashion!

I like this idea because nearly all going out tops these days are hideous.

Bunce1 · 22/04/2023 16:46

White tailored blouse is also a great look with black jeans and defo hells with a ponty front.

OldGrannyish · 22/04/2023 16:13

Any of these?

I quite like the bottom middle one.

what’s your colouring?

Rainraingoaway21 · 22/04/2023 16:47

For a special occasion I think the top needs to be silky to look more dressy seeing as wearing with jeans. These shirts and t-shirts would be day wear for me!

OldGrannyish · 22/04/2023 16:48

@Rainraingoaway21 I've not worn a dress since I left school! They look ridiculous on me and never fit. Size 8-10 top and 12-14 bottom, tall with standard legs so the waist is always in the wrong place and chunky shapeless legs.

I have three pairs of jeans (black, washed out dark blue, light blue) and two pairs of linen trousers, but it will be too cold to wear those.

HappyMe6 · 22/04/2023 16:49

Not a fan of either sorry I wouldn’t wear any of them and I’m in mid sixties too frumpy!

BranchGold · 22/04/2023 16:49

Brights aren’t ‘bad’ but I agree with a pp that a bright with black really cheapens the look, it can be dated and flattens out. Colour clashing brights can look amazing, but I think it can be tricky if you aren’t brave and don’t feel confident in your styling choices so I don’t think I’d recommend that for you with this upcoming event. A bright dress would be a good option though.

based on what you’re showing us, would I be right in guessing you haven’t changed your hair style for 10+ years either? Or never really had a hairstyle?

rookiemere · 22/04/2023 16:49

Oh wow sounds like you have a great figure, there are some lovely clothes out there. But if you must the second isn't so bad.

Rainraingoaway21 · 22/04/2023 16:49

Ok well stick with what you're comfortable with, have a little look online for a silky type top and blazer to go with the black jeans. Did you like the Mint Velvet one linked to? That would look lovely.

OldGrannyish · 22/04/2023 16:49

Ummm no. But I have booked in to get it cut.

getafringenotbotox · 22/04/2023 16:50

Op we need a pic when you decide what to wear. You sound lovely but disoriented about how you actually look in real life.

I know you will look 1000 times better than whatever you have in your head.

Fuerza · 22/04/2023 16:51

for a 50th?! neither. Wear something a bit more glamorous. The shirt looks like a work shirt and the t-shirt is just a holiday t-shirt. Neither of them says 50th
