Friend's 50th birthday. DH doesn't like one because it's too grannyish and MIL says that one is better (but then, she is a granny!)
Which is better? I prefer one over the other, but my fashion sense is questionable

Black jeans and probably a dark blue (or black?) cardigan with it

I wouldn't be wearing sandals, unless you're very good at this dressing up lark - and without wanting to give offence OP, I think we've established you have different skills - they can look frumpy.

HappiDaze · 22/04/2023 17:16

Also M and S has loads of lovely clothes in at the moment.

OldGrannyish · 22/04/2023 17:17

😂

Ellmau · 22/04/2023 17:17

The first one is frumpy.

The second one is nice for everyday, but not really for a party.

MysteryBelle · 22/04/2023 17:18

Those tops do absolutely nothing for the wearer. In fact they do the opposite. Even a supermodel couldn’t make those look good. Imagine one of the supermodels or famous women (not that we aspire to be them, no) in either one of those. Imagine Kate or Meghan, whichever is your favorite, in those. Yuck. You’re the same age as them, Op! Enjoy pretty and flattering clothes ❤️

MysteryBelle · 22/04/2023 17:19

I wouldn’t wear those to take my garbage to the recycle.

Prinnny · 22/04/2023 17:20

Sorry but they are all terrible! You’re only 2 years out of your 30s…why are you dressing like that?!

excelledyourself · 22/04/2023 17:21

Too frilly?

@rookiemere I have either purple DM's or standard black shoes with a small heel. I have plain black boots (although I think the soles might have parted from the uppers) and black ankle boots with a proper heel that I'm not sure I can walk in any longer!

Dear OP your taste is so so conservative and I say that as a 45 Yr old who threw out all her clothes in a fit of peri meno exhaustion recently because I consider myself to be old and fat (I'm not, I can see that now!)

What is your normal lifestyle? Are you at home with children and need to cover sick/playdoh stains hence the patterns?

Or is it the sweat showing that bothers you most? I have no expeiorence of too much perspiration but if you had a shower just before going out and put on some nuclear strength anti perspirsnt would you feel better in a lighter colour?

My experience of big birthdays is that they tend to be on the dressy side and all the options you have shown are the kind of thing you might wear to the garden centre.

I did like the green drapey one which would look great with some lovely jewellry and some heels with the boot cut jeans.

OldGrannyish · 22/04/2023 16:52

OP if you are set on wearing your black boot cut jeans then the top you linked could work. With a blazer and heels?

Any of these?

No !

OldGrannyish · 22/04/2023 17:25

Yes, I'm home with the DC. Although they're much older now. It will be the first time MIL has agreed to "baby"sit in 13 years.

@MarissaG i think they're my smartest trousers!

It looks like it comes in various colours too!

Forget the jeans and go for a maxi type dress. This is from a boutique that I use a lot and quality good and not too expensive

OldGrannyish · 22/04/2023 17:27

But bright colours aren't good with black jeans. They said so up there ^^

Do you have money to buy something nice and splurge? Do you live near a mint velvet or phase 8?

You could walk into one of those shops and find a million tops to match black jeans if you have the cash to splurge a bit.

Otherwise PP suggestions of Asda or Sainsbos are great.

MarissaG · 22/04/2023 17:29

Well, ignore them up there 😂
If you weren’t worrying about covering your tummy etc and could choose anything, what would you wear?

Thekormachameleon · 22/04/2023 17:29

Oh op, you can't wear those they are hideous

You're so young and sound like you have a fabulous figure - you deserve to look nice

What about a black jumpsuit, so easy to style and no worries about matching up separates

This is simple but would look lovely, throw in a blazer and you're good to go

sarahh96 · 22/04/2023 17:29

I'm going to buck the trend here and say the 1st one. I really like it, smart but casual. The 2nd one is ok but maybe a little to casual for the occasion

Moveoverdarlin · 22/04/2023 17:30

You’re 42 and a size 8-10? My goodness, you could get away with anything. You are dressing far too grumpy for your age. Go to any of the supermarkets. Personally that puffed sleeve top from &otherstories was also awful. I’m blonde and it wouldn’t suit me at all.

OldGrannyish · 22/04/2023 17:30

You could walk into one of those shops and find a million tops to match black jeans if you have the cash to splurge a bit.

but clearly I have no taste so that would be dangerous 😂😂
I can buy something, but not go crazy price wise. I don't mind paying a bit more if I'm likely to wear it in 15 years time

MarissaG · 22/04/2023 17:30

And OP you are not in the UK are you?

Ffsmakeitstop · 22/04/2023 17:30

My taste is more in line with ops. But I'm 65 so no help but that blue dress is horrific it would give me nightmares.
