Which top?

Friend's 50th birthday. DH doesn't like one because it's too grannyish and MIL says that one is better (but then, she is a granny!)
Which is better? I prefer one over the other, but my fashion sense is questionable

Black jeans and probably a dark blue (or black?) cardigan with it

Few ideas. Tops that can be dressed up a bit more with a necklace etc. Good price range too

Sorry but the 2 lace ones are if anything worse than the OP's original choices.

Loki64 · 23/04/2023 23:46

@NatashaDancing if ur on this post not to offer any help to OP and to just try and cause arguments with people im not sure why ur here. The OP has stated she gets self conscious over sweat marks ehich these tops would help with due to the material, and actually a top like this with blue jeans and the right shoes looks lovely.

Again, if ur here here just to cause rifts with people u should probably just remove urself.

I've offered a few suggestions. The OP herself has picked a plain silk top. The 2 white cotton tops are fussy and cheap and cheap looking. The OP wasn't actually looking for cheap. One of her choices was quite expensive as was the plain silk she picked.

If you've read the thread you will see the thread is full of posters expressing different views and being critical of other posters' suggestions.

Loki64 · 23/04/2023 23:55

NatashaDancing · 23/04/2023 23:38

You're still missing the point.

The OP shouldn't be wearing those tops because they frankly are awful- not because she's 42.

I'd still love to know what you think I should be wearing.

@NatashaDancing u certainly shouldnt be wearing sequins. Its almost May, we are not in December.

The OP is asking for help, not for someone to tell her how the tops she clearly liked are "awful" because u wouldnt wear them.

Loki64 · 23/04/2023 23:56

@NatashaDancing i have read through the thread, and seem to see ur name coming up frequently belittling people and trying to cause arguments. Including belittling OP.

Loki64 · 23/04/2023 23:57

@NatashaDancing the whole thread was to help OP, and HER opinions. Not yours.

Have you read this thread? Almost every reply has commented about how awful the original choices were.

Loki64 · 23/04/2023 23:59

@NatashaDancing the thread is also full of u causing offence to people and u should probably be more self aware.

Motorina · 24/04/2023 00:19

I can't help the OP (fashion clueless myself) but I'm loving some of the tops posted here.

A question about the real silk ones.... how do you wash them? I have (had) a gorgeous Boden silk shirt and knackered it washing it.

Are they actually practical for real women who don't just glow?

Mamanyt · 24/04/2023 00:19

I'd wear either one, but I'm 70 years old, which probably says it all.

RemusLupinsBiggestGroupie · 24/04/2023 00:25

Macinae · 23/04/2023 22:56

@NatashaDancing you've taken this personally. My point is there is an age associated with any clothing, and in this case these clothes tend to be for older women. If you don't consider yourself in that category, cool, but OP is 42 and nowhere near this style of clothing in terms of age. It's not a personal attack on you.

No, there isn't. Really.

Angrywife · 24/04/2023 00:27

🙈 out of all the tops posted on here there's 3 nice ones.
The rest are Margaret thatcher style blouses or frumpy shapeless sacks!

You lot must have been the wardrobe buyers for stepford wives

Ruthietuthie · 24/04/2023 00:35

@Motorina, some silk can be hand washed, but I tend to send the most precious things to be dry-cleaned (which probably isn't the best).

moonspiral · 24/04/2023 05:53

NatashaDancing · 23/04/2023 22:49

The tops the OP picked aren't very attractive.

I wouldn't wear those tops because they aren't attractive. It's got damn all to do with my age.

I'm 63 - please enlighten me on what age appropriate clothes I should be wearing- or you think I might be wearing.

Yeah it's not an age thing

moonspiral · 24/04/2023 05:55

OldGrannyish · 23/04/2023 10:31

Hmm I think I prefer navy but DD says black. Colourwise me says I'm a deep winter. I quite like this blazer but I'm not sure I can justify it as a one off. Unless it's job interview material? Does it go with navy trousers/top?

Not really it would go with black trousers though?

moonspiral · 24/04/2023 05:56

JackGrealishsLegs · 23/04/2023 10:48

I can’t help but notice on this thread how the usual cries of ageism by S&B posters are absent, despite constant mentions of “frumpy”, “grannyish” (even in the op’s name!) and “nursing homes”. Why is this thread escaping scrutiny? The only person who’s mentioned it is @NatashaDancing . Part of me wonders if it’s not all some sort of weird experiment by the OP - why would you call yourself “OldGrannyish” and post the tops in the OP if you weren’t trying to bait ageist comments? While claiming to think that those are the sort of thing most 40 year olds wear? It’s bizarre.

Not true I mentioned it as well. It's awful.

sorry to interupt but @NatashaDancing has simply challengd the ageism being thrown about. I did too. And the rest of it, the whole point is OP has chosen two tops - some of us think they aren't very good. So we've offered alternatives.

LoisLane66 · 24/04/2023 07:18

@Mamanyt
Being 70 shouldn't categorise you as far as most clothes are concerned. I say 'most' because naturally, there are exceptions and it depends on one's look, figure and ability to carry off the particular style. I'm 78.5 size 14/16 and 5-5. I wear modern fashion but I'm very critical of myself and find that Melissa Murrell on YouTube, a 40+ woman, gives clothing and accessory advice to women of any age and size, including her own mother. It's worth taking a few of her tips on board as they're sensible and she shows outfits on herself and other women of all ages and shapes, which are from Reiss, H&M, M&S, Cos, Primark and Amazon among others.
A full length mirror is essential so you are seeing what others see, not from the 'looking down at your feet' angle which distorts your take on any outfit. Be adventurous. You're only here once.

LoisLane66 · 24/04/2023 07:25

Can we get away from black and navy with the exception of, perhaps but not always, trousers?
Isn't celebrating a birthday an occasion to wear something you mightn't wear every day? Step out of your comfort zone for a while.

FancyFanny · 24/04/2023 08:28

WHAT? ! Sequins are just for December? Never! I love a sparkly top at any time of the year!

I stick everything in the machine - silk/wool setting, using Stergene/Woolite/Dreft 'silk and cashmere' stuff. My Boden silk shirts are still going strong, along with all my other silk/cashmere things. The only things I don't put in the machine are wool/cashmere coats.

Bears repeating. A hundred times.

rileynexttime · 24/04/2023 09:14

I think the user name was chosen to reflect her husbands comments as quoted in OP's first post .

DH doesn't like one because it's too grannyish

GeriKellmansUpdo · 24/04/2023 09:39

OP reads completely genuine to me. I have many friends like her, completely oblivious of fashion and makeup. Refreshing, actually. They wear similar clothes. Which as I said, I prefer to some of the more current suggestions. I hate current clothes.

rookiemere · 24/04/2023 09:50

I agree with @GeriKellmansUpdo .
I feel hugely sorry for OP, it's clear she doesn't give much of a hoot about fashion and just wants an appropriate outfit for a social occasion.

Some responses have been helpful, and I do think the silk T shirt she's now looking at is quite elegant, but some posters seem unable to see past their own viewpoint and read the room to offer suggestions suitable for OPs natural style and reasonably modest budget.
