Which top?

OldGrannyish · 22/04/2023 14:54

Friend's 50th birthday. DH doesn't like one because it's too grannyish and MIL says that one is better (but then, she is a granny!)
Which is better? I prefer one over the other, but my fashion sense is questionable

Black jeans and probably a dark blue (or black?) cardigan with it

Remember when cardies were trendy and called pashminas?

Eh? Cardigans and pashminas are two completely different things.

Cakeandcardio · 23/04/2023 18:46

I think if you are a size 8 - 10 and only in your 50s or late 40s then you are doing yourself a disservice wearing tops like these. Would you consider a nice floaty dress from Zara?

Niftythrifter · 23/04/2023 19:13

@OldGrannyish Whatever you wear given your commute then you do need to be warm so take something that will keep you warm on the commute as there is nothing chic in being cold.

LoisLane66 · 23/04/2023 19:18

I'm 78 and would NOT wear either of those tops but I do have the emerald green satin (sorry, not silk) shirt which also comes in cream at £29.99. M&S also have matching suede shoes with a medium block heel. You'll feel like a new version of yourself. Hair cut and possibly in a different new style. You'll feel so much more energised...believe me. Never mind what your DH says, he's not the one wearing the clothes.
Size 8-10...all sizes are in stock and can be delivered next day to your nearest store or food hall. Now go online and get ordering. Order two sizes so you are sure of a good fit.

Have fun. 🎉🎈🎂🍷🍸

Strawberrydelight78 · 23/04/2023 19:38

Not compulsory but at least get a bit more dressed up. Not wear something you go shopping in.

Leftoverssandwich · 23/04/2023 19:56

I love the silk t shirts, OP, and I hope you get one of them. I am so fussy and didn’t like many of the suggestions on here but they look classy and timeless.

OnLockdown · 23/04/2023 20:03

Can you post a picture of you wearing the two tops?

GonnaGetGoingReturns · 23/04/2023 20:18

bunnybunnybunnybunny · 23/04/2023 12:47

I wore eg Joseph v necked long sleeved tops (sort of very fine “ribbed” but it wasn’t, in black and chocolate brown with satin ribbon trim at v neck and sleeve cuffs for day (circa 2000s)

@GonnaGetGoingReturns I had those Joseph tops too! I bought my first in the late 90s and had them in every colour apart from brown, the vest tops too. I wore them with Joseph's gumetal grey metallic pvc trousers and their cotton twill trousers, both styles had a kind of semi-circular insert/seaming on the backside. While I loved these kinds of tops then, I wouldn't wear them now.

Thank you for reminding me of them.

Ha ha ha! @bunnybunnybunnybunny - we were style twins.

I had some of the sleeveless ones
too can’t recall which colours probably just black and metallic and maybe one with lace and I had a metallic pair of their trousers too but I can’t recall the colour. I think I had an Aubergine or pewter colour one of the same top (long sleeved satin trim). They all got a lot of wear! My boyfriend slightly later on in 2000ish loved the Joseph slim fit silk satin shirts (handy for birthday gift from me).

But as you say that was for our figures f tastes back then, not now! I do still like Joseph and sometimes buy from them but they’re more expensive now and I think I preferred the designs better then!

NatashaDancing · 23/04/2023 12:40

I like this one. The neckline and the ties at the back make it more dressy. They could be tied in a bow or left loose as the model (who is wearing it with black) is wearing it. It doesn't need a jacket.

Silk blouse with back ties

I like this. Don’t think it’’d suit me mind but I like it. I also like the B@sh boucle jacket linked above but not sure it’s my style either.

Sort of tempted to order both to see if I look more “grown up”!

Inkyblue123 · 23/04/2023 20:28

Could you go to John Lewis or similar department store and get a free personal stylist session ? They’ll pick out stuff that is likely to suit you and you just try it on and buy what you like.

Macinae · 23/04/2023 20:48

You are 42, not 72! There are plenty of much nicer tops that meet your requirements. Get something loose fitting if that's your preference, but you could do sequin top, black jeans and a black leather jacket. Or a plainer top and a bright blazer. Think one statement piece and low-key everything else.

If you have £70 to splurge on a non descript silk plain top, then there's no reason not to get a good top that can be dressed up/down with jeans, trousers skirts etc.

Monsoon is an easy safe starting point...

All 'safe', versatile, natural materials. They even have lots similar to those you're thinking about. But nicer, IMHO!

You may hate these, but I would go for one of the plain tops then ditch the cardigan and wear one of these short kimonos in a colour that compliments the top. I have three of these and wear them with plain dresses and tops. They always get compliments and feel gorgeous and floaty. https://onehundredstars.co.uk/collections/short-kimonos

Short Kimonos

Our bestselling kimono jackets have loose ¾ length sleeves, an open front, and a lightly embroidered lapel. With a twist on the traditional kimono, these short kimonos make the perfect summer wardrobe staple.

Who says a 72 year old would wear those?

Macinae · 23/04/2023 22:31

@moonspiral it's a hyperbole to highlight that OP is looking at clothes decades older than her. Read it as 82, if you like.

You're still missing the point.

@NatashaDancing I responded to OP highlighting that her style appears to be far too old for her. What is the problem?

Solonge · 23/04/2023 22:44

I am 68 and both too frumpy even for me!!!!

The tops the OP picked aren't very attractive.

I wouldn't wear those tops because they aren't attractive. It's got damn all to do with my age.

I'm 63 - please enlighten me on what age appropriate clothes I should be wearing- or you think I might be wearing.

Loki64 · 23/04/2023 22:55

Few ideas. Tops that can be dressed up a bit more with a necklace etc. Good price range too

@NatashaDancing you've taken this personally. My point is there is an age associated with any clothing, and in this case these clothes tend to be for older women. If you don't consider yourself in that category, cool, but OP is 42 and nowhere near this style of clothing in terms of age. It's not a personal attack on you.

The OP shouldn't be wearing those tops because they frankly are awful- not because she's 42.

I'd still love to know what you think I should be wearing.
