Which top?

Friend's 50th birthday. DH doesn't like one because it's too grannyish and MIL says that one is better (but then, she is a granny!)
Which is better? I prefer one over the other, but my fashion sense is questionable

Black jeans and probably a dark blue (or black?) cardigan with it

This is lovely, but it’s a difficult neckline to get away with if at all busty.

Yes I agree. Needs buttons which can be unbuttoned. Love the colour though

I like this one. The neckline and the ties at the back make it more dressy. They could be tied in a bow or left loose as the model (who is wearing it with black) is wearing it. It doesn't need a jacket.

Silk blouse with back ties

Not this one

MN is obsessed with "blazers". I don't think I've worn one since I left school either and also have never worn the blazer and cami option. (Tbh, I don't particularly like it - I don't often use the word "dated" , this might be the first time but it does look "dated" as if the wearer is trying to look like Kate Moss from 20 years ago) Perhaps we're talking about different things - I've had tailored, fitted jackets but not what I would call a "blazer" which to me means a longer, straight up and down jacket.

I don't think it's a look for the OP.

You're so right. Blazers are so naff.

moonspiral · 23/04/2023 16:39

OP. Do either of your options bring you joy when you wear it? Wear that one.

mikado1 · 23/04/2023 16:46

Blazers are definitely having a moment but it's not the blazer of ten plus years ago, it seems generally longer and more oversized. I haven't seen one I like yet. The Bash jacket is lovely, Massimo Dutti have some boucle jackets for a more reasonable price, but still nowhere near cheap for what it is.

OldGrannyish · 23/04/2023 16:50

Realistically I'll be wearing either a black or cream softshell 😮🙄to travel there and back so I don't think a blazer is necessary. Or my raincoat if the weather is bad. So I'll need a jumper or something for the (2hrbus/train) trip home. I doubt it will be warm enough for just a denim jacket.

I'm quite tempted to go for one of these and hope it gets here in time. Lily silk or This one I guess that will be the most versatile, although no idea how you choose which colour - stick to black? Or is navy more wearable?

No that's just a t-shirt. Which of your two options did you like best?

Blazers are definitely a thing right now.

Ruthietuthie · 23/04/2023 17:32

The silk t-shirt you suggested is lovely. Go for that one, in which ever color you fancy.
The purple blazer is dreadful - 1990s catalogue model wear. Wear whatever coat you have and take it off when you get there.
Bootleg cut jeans don't go with Doc Martens. Do you have another shoe style, if you are set on the jeans?

Yes, blazers are cool. But it has to be the right cut to look current. Hush usually have really fashionable looking ones and manage to not make them look workified or officey.

FancyFanny · 23/04/2023 17:40

I saw a group of 40/50 year old women yesterday heading out into town in the evening. Each was wearing black trousers, a bright top and a fitted blazer- big overdone hair, lots of make-up and high heels. They all looked terrible!

JaneFondue · 23/04/2023 17:43

I saw a lot of nice navy and cream boucle jackets in Mango and Zara. I think they would look better than a blazer.

user1472151176 · 23/04/2023 17:47

I like the 2nd one. I would wear it and I'm 39 🤷‍♀️

sofamarathon · 23/04/2023 18:00

Op! You're 42 and size 8-10?

Youd look good in anything but those tops are depressingly grannified

What did you wear when you were 30? Surely you can remember

LadyEloise1 · 23/04/2023 18:01

SeanMean · 22/04/2023 15:02

Definitely neither.

There are much nicer clothes out there!

This 💯

Kentucky83 · 23/04/2023 18:08

By the way they look, definitely the 2nd, but I'd always pick based on what felt better when I had it on! Which is comfier, which one could you dance in?

sofamarathon · 23/04/2023 18:08

OP, im a pear shape too (and a size bigger) and i always wear dresses

Google styles to suit pears

OldGrannyish · 23/04/2023 18:08

@sofamarathon didn't go out in my 30's

Is ‘something new’ compulsory? Why?

thebestbirtheraccordingtoDD · 23/04/2023 18:09

I think a plan black silk shirt would look nice with black jeans & your DMs
Not bootcut though you need a straight leg or slim leg for DM's
Keep it simple and you won't feel uncomfortable

OldGrannyish · 23/04/2023 18:10

@Tuskanini none of my pre-Dc clothes fit me.

No cardigan. NO NO NO. why agonise over which top to wear then spoil the effect by putting a cardigan over it? Ridiculous!

LoisLane66 · 23/04/2023 18:35

Dull and forgettable, unless you're a dazzling blonde or redhead, in which case you could get away with dull colours.
If you wear either of those with black jeans or any jeans and DMs, it will look as if you haven't bothered. Who wears DMs on a party night...unless you're 25?
If you want to look forgettable, wear either...or both. Can't you buy some decent going out trousers? Reiss have smart trousers which could possibly be worn to work. H&M and M&S have a good selection too. Buy a top which you wouldn't normally consider, not too outré but outside your dull choices.
I think the emerald green silk shirt M&S sell would be great with a pair of black trousers and black shoes (not DMs) and some nice jewellery, a modern fine chain necklace or three from Marks or H&M.

Elly46 · 23/04/2023 18:41

I think both are a bit unremarkable really. I’m 46, same size as you and have bought some lovely tops from M&S. singe colour is smarter more party ish. If you like them then it doesn’t matter what anyone else things and the one on the right is nicer imo

Remember when cardies were trendy and called pashminas?
