Friend's 50th birthday. DH doesn't like one because it's too grannyish and MIL says that one is better (but then, she is a granny!)
Which is better? I prefer one over the other, but my fashion sense is questionable

Black jeans and probably a dark blue (or black?) cardigan with it

I have a dark denim jacket and a dusky pink one, don't have a leather jacket.

Oh the right leather jacket can be a good style investment.

Mirabai · 23/04/2023 11:07

The navy silk top would look nice with cream pants.

MN is obsessed with "blazers". I don't think I've worn one since I left school either and also have never worn the blazer and cami option. (Tbh, I don't particularly like it - I don't often use the word "dated" , this might be the first time but it does look "dated" as if the wearer is trying to look like Kate Moss from 20 years ago) Perhaps we're talking about different things - I've had tailored, fitted jackets but not what I would call a "blazer" which to me means a longer, straight up and down jacket.

I don't think it's a look for the OP.

Again, we're in complete agreement.

Like you, 'dated' is a word I rarely use, preferring 'current' or 'modern' instead.

To me, a blazer is exactly what you have said, and also akin to the shape of the jazzy bright coloured ones worn by Victoria Wood in the 80s, and also the one OP posted a short while ago. While I don't wear blazers, I wear jacket like this, usually in bouclé, some with buttons, others without, and all are fitted and sit at my waist/an inch or two lower. Am sure some consider this style to be a blazer but as it has neither a collar nor a lapel, it is not.

That's a beautiful jacket and it isn't a blazer !

Rainraingoaway21 · 23/04/2023 11:43

What type of material is the dusky pink jacket you have? @OldGrannyish

If it's not denim could you work round that, wear with the black jeans you have and then all you need to buy is maybe a cream silk top to go under the jacket? The one you linked to last is nice, do they do that in cream?

toucaninjapan · 23/04/2023 11:44

A blue silk shirt (this one is from Sezane) would look chic to me. It's a timeless piece

@OldGrannyish that's a shame. If you brought a top with sleeves would you need a jacket if you're mainly indoors?

If you're happy to wear your black jeans and heeled boots I think all you'd need to buy is a long sleeved, plain coloured blouse and wear tucked in with a belt. Some jewellery, your new hair-do you're getting and good to go!

OldGrannyish · 23/04/2023 11:49

The Lily silk blouse is very nice. The posters saying you can't wear black and colours and black and navy are wrong.

You can wear your pink denim jacket over that blouse in white, grey, black, navy, or red. Presumably as it's a party indoors you'd take the jacket off.

Could you post us a pic of you or two with face blurred out so we can get an idea what styles you like? I’m veering towards John Lewis style advisor or Stitch Fix for you.

Again, different fashions don’t suit everyone and I also think evolve with your look, figure, lifestyle over time. I wore eg Joseph v necked long sleeved tops (sort of very fine “ribbed” but it wasn’t, in black and chocolate brown with satin ribbon trim at v neck and sleeve cuffs for day (circa 2000s) but I wouldn’t wear them and I don’t think they’d suit me now, I am about a stone and a half heavier though and more booby! I also loved a black semi fitted hip length biker with fur leather jacket in my early 20s, again, not me now!

One person’s classy and stylish will be another’s nemesis. I did used to love Brora and Fenn Wright Manson fine knit merino and cashmere knits but found the upkeep plus moths and bobbling too hard for me to look after on a regular basis though I still have the odd one.

NatashaDancing · 23/04/2023 12:40

I like this one. The neckline and the ties at the back make it more dressy. They could be tied in a bow or left loose as the model (who is wearing it with black) is wearing it. It doesn't need a jacket.

Can’t remember who said what. I LOVE that boucle jacket but £££. I got one in Next recently and removed the (vile) buttons. Places like Mango and Zara usually have them too.

Personally, I’d I wanted a biker jacket I’d get black leather but that’s because navy leather seems very Teresa May to me.

@GonnaGetGoingReturns I had those Joseph tops too! I bought my first in the late 90s and had them in every colour apart from brown, the vest tops too. I wore them with Joseph's gumetal grey metallic pvc trousers and their cotton twill trousers, both styles had a kind of semi-circular insert/seaming on the backside. While I loved these kinds of tops then, I wouldn't wear them now.

Thank you for reminding me of them.

NatashaDancing · 23/04/2023 12:53

I really like the white version of the back tie shirt I posted. Some of the how to wear it suggestions on the website make it look a bit like the Max Mara shirt.

It doesn't need a jacket other than to travel to get to the party.

@OldGrannyish i’m a lot older and fatter than you, but if I was going to base an outfit around black boot cuts, it would probably look something like this. A white, cream or light grey distinctive blouse. Metallic or animal print belt. Heels, either boots or shoes/ sandals and a brightly coloured clutch bag/ wristlet.

Silk blouse with back ties

This is lovely, but it’s a difficult neckline to get away with if at all busty.

MrsRinaDecker · 23/04/2023 13:51

Good shout on ordering one of the plain silky tops OP! I hope it arrives in time and you enjoy the party.

Chewbecca · 23/04/2023 14:17

Your Lily silk top in navy is a really good choice IMO.

Leave the purple jacket though.

Tell us about the jackets you already own.

Chewbecca · 23/04/2023 14:19

P.s. no issue with navy + black jeans.

clpsmum · 23/04/2023 14:22

Aargh! I certainly didn't mean blazer as in 'blazer'! My H and M jacket is fairly fitted with rolled back sleeves with a contrasting lining.... A boxy blazer would look terrible on me.

These silk taffeta shirts are beautiful and snazzy enough for a party. Either black or dark green, tucked in or loose.Max Mara silk taffeta

I prefer a silk shirt which can be unbuttoned a bit - much sexier
