Friend's 50th birthday. DH doesn't like one because it's too grannyish and MIL says that one is better (but then, she is a granny!)
Which is better? I prefer one over the other, but my fashion sense is questionable

Black jeans and probably a dark blue (or black?) cardigan with it

Why on earth are you looking at clothes like that at age 42 and also calling yourself OldGrannyish?? 42 isn't old at all.

Im 41 and buy clothes from places like &otherstories, free people, Zara and fashion-forward independent boutiques. I was honestly shocked when I read you were 42 - I thought you were going to say about 65 with those choices, my 72 yo dm wouldn't even wear those!

Flyingf1edgelings · 22/04/2023 21:45

Both look travel agenty 🙂

Cbgds87 · 22/04/2023 21:46

Esprit look to have a decent selection of neutral blouses/shirts
Sleeves white embroided top - https://www.esprit.co.uk/p/blouses-woven-043CC1F307.html
Long Sleeve scallop edge blouse - https://www.esprit.co.uk/p/scallop-edge-lace-blouse-993EE1F309_100.html
White short sleeve tshirt blouse - https://www.esprit.co.uk/p/cotton-blouse-033CC1F306_110.html
Not sure if they offer free click and collect in store but if they do you could always order a few options to guarantee they have your size, collect in store, try in instore changing rooms and switch/return anything unsuitable

@BrendaRegina That is some idiot's idea. I don't like Meghan very much but she does dress well. If you don't agree then that is your prerogative but you don't have to be an unpleasant bitch about it.

The first looks like a care home uniform. Or what the PA wears to the office on Tuesdays. She's retiring next year. The next pic is what she wears to watch her grandson play football in on Saturdays.

A single colour is almost always classier.

Out of curiosity, why can't you wear synthetic?

😂😂🙄

ReallyShouldBeDoingSomethingElse · 22/04/2023 22:19

I think the second top in your first post was nice OP.

What this thread has taught me as that I (and pretty much all my friends) do not belong on this Style & Beauty board. So many of those floofy blouses with enormous bows/sleeves, huge gaping necklines etc. must be what is fashionable this year but will look even more ridiculous in a couple of years time when they're not on trend.

An understated top will wear well over time and you'll be able to wear it time and time again.

People would be absolutely horrified if they saw my wardrobe.

BellaVita · 22/04/2023 22:21

I will be 58 in August and would not wear any of those tops, not in the house, for work or to go out in.

I wore this dress with biker boots and leather jacket on Thursday when we went out for my husbands birthday.

What about this top, the model is even wearing it with black jeans? It would suit your size and hide a bit of a belly (although at size 8-10 surely that less of an issue than you think). I think what you've posted so far is good for work (at least some of them are good for work), but not for an evening out.

That's nice. There have been some awful alternatives.

blackpearwhitelilies · 22/04/2023 22:23

I like both OP.

MountainChalet · 22/04/2023 22:28

Not my style OP but if I had to choose one, I'd pick the second.

CreamTeaThievery · 22/04/2023 21:27

I like this with the black jeans and a statement necklace.

That's good too

wobblymum1 · 22/04/2023 21:57

😂😂🙄

Nice bit of ageism there. Not that it's the only example.

As for the question...

workistoomuch · 22/04/2023 22:31

I like them both 🤷 and I'm not a granny, im late twenties 🤣

Mirabai · 22/04/2023 22:36

RemusLupinsBiggestGroupie · 22/04/2023 22:33

Shirt if you don't mind all black - could wear over a cami with some or all buttons undone.

That would look good with black cigarette pants.

nopuppiesallowed · 22/04/2023 22:40

I'm 71, a size 10 with a bit of a tummy and would never dream of wearing the two tops you are considering. I'd wear a bright top and a blazer (H and M or Zara) and heeled pointy toed boots and accessories with some statement earrings. Push up the sleeves of the blazer and wear a watch and / or chunky bracelet. Have a look at Melissa Murrell on YouTube. She has great ideas for hiding a tummy and how to wear clothes. I absolutely love YouTube fashion advice!

@Rainraingoaway21, you could wear your jewel colored tops with dark denim. For a more formal look, trousers or skirt in the same color or same color family but a different depth/tone would be lovely. Or color with color.
One of the posters above posted a green Max Mara blouse. Note how it is shown with trousers of the same color. With black trousers the color would look far cheaper and flat. And NEVER black with a color. Only black, white, silver or grey (and possibly navy - black and navy can look expensive if appropriately done) with black.

I posted the links to the Max Mara shirt. It's beautiful in both green and black. I disagree it couldn't be worn with black.

This thread however shows indeed that everyone's taste is different. I don't like the OP's tops but, to my eyes, there have been some awfully dull to downright horrific alternatives.

I like the oversized white shirt posted early on; the slightly eccentricly shaped black cotton ASOS top, the cream silk pussycat bow blouse and a purple asymmetric neckline top. Those, and the Max Mara ones, are the only ones I would wear.

That's nice dear.
But you know the OP is looking for something fairly conservative, so I'm not sure how your age or dress choice is relevant.

Mirabai · 22/04/2023 22:42

Sorry but, bollocks.
